Rumors of a 7A

 Share

Recommended Posts

I've heard adding a 7A was a possibility after the last couple of realignments.  IMO it would make sense because you have some small 4A's that are playing against schools that have nearly 3 times their enrollment.  I know there's more to the UIL than 4A, but we'll see.

I don't see it happening within the next 2 alignments because enrollment throughout the state is down.

If 6A schools won’t even vote to split football based on travels, there’s no way they’re voting for a 7A. The travel at the top class would be unbelievable.

So who’s going to be the first school to start flying their team to games?

I've heard of matchups where it would have been faster. I know Ennis played Canutillo in 2014 in a Semifinal game, and they met in Lubbock, which was about 5 hours for both teams.

Longview flew to Lubbock to face Permian back in '75. But yea, I feel like it would be a lot of long, long bus rides if 7A was created right now.

Regular season game? Surprised that was scheduled especially back in the day. That was a long ride must have been since Mid dessa ( in between what they call it) airport lol.

State Semi-Finals vs Permian.

I know Marshall played Permian in the late 80s in non-district. I have to imagine one of them flew. I know our boys rode buses to Midland when we played Midland Lee in 2000 to open the season.

Just split 6a like the rest. No perfect model but is working tremendously for the rest of the classes.

They've put it up for a vote twice already, and both times it was voted down.

Just look at how bad it is in 5A D1. Travel for Longview is way worse than it was in 6A...lot different going to Sherman and McKinney than Rockwall and Mesquite. West Texas would be a massive mess.

Increased travel + you'll still have schools playing other schools with over 2,000-3,000 enrollment difference, solving absolutely nothing.

No way they'll pre-split 6A.

They used to play Abilene in the early 80's for about 3 or 4 years.  I didn't know they took a plane back then, but Texas International Airlines was flying out of Gregg Co. airport at the time.

I think there will eventually be a 7A, but how soon I don't think anyone knows for sure.

My niece went to San Angelo Central a few years ago.  Her basketball games took her to Amarillo twice a year.  She would not get home about 4 or 5am on a school day.

The largest 32 schools in Texas should be 7a

32 seems kind of small.   And random.

But at some point today I’m going to show what a district in 7A would look like with 32.... or even 64 schools.

The travel would be ridiculous....

I’m really trying to see what benefit it serves TBH.  Because it all looks to have negative effects on something.  Cost. Time. Fans.  Revenue loss.  Possibly kills traditional rivalries.

What‘s the positive side?  I see none.

Agreed. Just go with the 6A split, and let it be what it is. We have 12 classes in football.

6A split and adjust the numbers accordingly. If 6A splits then expect some of the larger 5A Div 1 schools to get moved up. The enrollment cutoffs will be effected for everybody 1A-6A. Make everything split a little more evenly.

Readjusting the numbers like that could possibly fix some of the 3A/4A "issues" too.

I agree with this. I also know there's not a perfect scenario out there, but I really feel like it will alleviate some of the issues that happen in the lower classifications.

I can’t see them going through with 7A before splitting 6A in football.

That would completely change the entire landscape.

I agree, this would be the first step.

This is my mock 7A alignment.

The 7A cutoff for this alignment would be 2,771 and up.

This is based on last year's numbers.... and doesn't account for new schools or decreasing enrollments or districts asking for schools to play up.

So there are undoubtably some schools on here that shouldn't be and some that should be that aren't.

I tried to make it as geographically feasible as possible.... but some of these distances are wild.

Enjoy!

Couple of observations:

District 1:
El Paso to San Angelo is 401 miles one way
El Paso to Midland is 306 miles

District 2:
ET, SLC, DeSoto, and Duncanville make this the top district in the state... and there are some other strong candidates in there too.

District 3:
Drive time from Lewisville to Irving is estimated at 7 hours and 31 mins..... jk

District 4:
This is one way for Plano schools to get back in to the playoffs.

District 5:
Pretty interesting district.  Not a juggernaut by any means...but it would be competitive.

District 6:
Yawn.

District 7:
That would be a fun district to watch.

District 8:
Another competitive district

District 9:
Cypress ISD is a beast...at building schools.

District 10:
Katy Katy Katy

District 11:
A wild mix of suburban and inner city.

District 12:
No clear heavyweights here.  This could be anyones district every season.

District 13:
Westlake and LT own this district.  Round Rock considers another HS so they can drop their schools back to 6A.

District 14 and 15
How long as it been since a SAISD school has been a true contender?

District 16:
473 miles from Harlingen to Del Rio
All the driving for this district is insane.
