Rumors of a 7A

This is my mock 7A alignment.

The 7A cutoff for this alignment would be 2,771 and up.

This is based on last year's numbers.... and doesn't account for new schools or decreasing enrollments or districts asking for schools to play up.

So there are undoubtably some schools on here that shouldn't be and some that should be that aren't.

I tried to make it as geographically feasible as possible.... but some of these distances are wild.

Enjoy!

Its a good Mock, but the El Paso situation and the Del Rio/Laredo situation is the issue. You could probably send Del Rio to San Antonio area, but you still have the El Paso issue.  The other issue I see is how would 6a look? You just took half of the schools out of 6a to create 7a. Will you have enough schools to form the current 32 districts? If not, are the remaining schools enough to form a reasonable 16 districts?

Regardless, its a good start, but the El Paso thing is a major issue.

Good catch with San Benito..... they would definitely fit better in one of the SA districts.  SA is only a little over 2.5 hours..... the south district was much longer after I looked.

Laredo- 3:05
Los Fresnos- 6:17
Harlingen- 6:23 mins
La Joya-  5:30
San Benito- 6:40

-----------
My alignment would have 136 schools in 7A and 116 in 6A.

I originally had closer to a 50/50 split between them.....but it left a couple of 5 team districts.....and it created more travel problems.

TBH....I'm not sure how it would affect 6A..... but it would no doubt drop it to 16 districts instead of 32.  And it may would create more travel problems for 6A than 7A.  I was actually surprised..... travel wouldn't really be that bad for 7A outside of the West Texas district and the far South district.  The rest of it was pretty unremarkable by East Texas driving standards.  Now.....metro fans would howl.  God Forbid Lewisville fans have to drive all the way to Irving or something.

Another issue I have...

I dont understand how it makes more sense for a school with 2700 to play a school with 4000+ rather than playing a school with 2300.

That's the thing....there really isnt a lot of mega schools (4,000+) in TX. So when you presplit or create a 7A, naturally they'll have to pull up some schools as low as 27-2800 to fill in the districts....and that doesn't solve anything.

The only way to fix things...is if you get districts like Allen, Plano or Galena Park to build more schools. But you cant force them to do that...so...back to square one.

I don't think 6A NEEDS a pre split anyway.

I would do it just to have it uniform across the board with all the classes.

Call it what it is too. We have 12 classes for football, and 6 for other sports.

Hey Mav, what about a 6A Split instead, with schools above 2950 or 3000 going to Div.1.  I think that would work. It would make District 1 a 5 team district cause you would lose El Paso Franklin and Frenship but that should fix most of the issues.

Lots of issues with a pre-split 6A.....it's no wonder why they haven't done it.  There are some travel nightmares.....

A few observations as an outsider (5A fan) with no dog in the fight.......

6A-Div I
-El Paso Franklin needs a free pass.....  even though they have 6A Div I numbers... it's INSANE to make them drive those crazy distances when there are SEVEN EP schools in 6A Div II.... let them play down for football.  I mean... COME ON.

-The Permian Basin schools or their district mates are going to get shafted no matter what.  Drop them to a 5 team district and you now have them scrambling for SIX non-district games.... in the middle of nowhere.  That's tough.  But finding sacrificial lambs to send them is bad too.  El Paso leaves a district full of schools they could be playing.  But can you imagine Arlington or Trinity being forced out that way.... when they are literally surrounded by 6A-D1 schools.  Tough thing to fix.  No matter what.... someone's not happy, or you have issues with scheduling/travel.

- The I-35 Corridor is tough too.... the Killeen schools and Belton are going to travel no matter what.  Either to the metroplex... or to Austin.

- Most of the Dallas and Houston area districts are nothing to complain about (except traffic).  Not a lot of crazy mileage.  Some goot rivalries intact... and some new ones to be formed.

- Gotta feel bad for Del Rio... they are on an island.  But putting them with SA makes more sense than sending them south....

- Driving for the border district is awful.  District 16 and District 2 may be the biggest reasons we don't see a split.

--------

6A Div II

- As terrible as Div I is for EP.... Division II looks glorious.  I stand by my call to let EP Franklin drop to Div II for football.  But sometimes common sense isn't what UIL is known for.

- District 2 in Div II is just as awful as District 2 in Division I...... only worse.  Stretching from Western DFW all the way to Abilene and into the Panhandle.... it's a nightmare.

- Tyler Lee is a problem.  Can't really shove them into district 4 because it's already packed (and could still have a few more....like Mesquite and North Mesquite.  The problem?  There are just too many DFW schools that fall into the Div II bracket.... and there simply isn't enough room to cram them all together....so someone has to get shafted.....  you could arrange them dozens of ways.  None of them make sense.

- Centex in Div II is a little kinder.... esp for Waco/Killeen/Temple

- Austin and Houstonarea schools all fit together pretty nicely EXCEPT Beaumont Westbrook.  They... like Tyler Lee... and Frenship.... get the shaft for being all alone.

- Eagle Pass.... they have the same issue Del Rio has in Div I.... but sending them to SA.... though a long drive... is kinder than sending them south.

- Driving for 15 and 16 is awful.  No two ways about it.

---------

All this looking at maps and drive times brought me to this conclusion......

While it sounds great to make 6A uniform like all the other classifications.... it just doesn't make sense.  Not geographically.  Not economically.

It breaks up rivalries.  It makes it very hard for fans to make games.

Arlington to Wofforth is 337 miles ONE way.

Let's group as many of these schools together as we can in ONE class.... and then we can split them after the playoffs. It just makes sense to do it that way.

JMHO.

Just leave 6A the way it is now, just simply change the classification name to 7A...........no squabbling over travel............then divide the lower 5(now) classes into 6 classes - less discrepancies in the sizes of each class than it is now but travel will not change dramatically for most.
