November 18, 1977: On this day 46 years ago, the movie Semi-Tough premiered at theaters around the country. The 1977 sports-comedy film starred Burt Reynolds and Kris Krisofferson and was based on the 1972 novel of the same name written by Dan Jenkins. Reynolds and Kristofferson portrayed pro football players Billy Clyde Puckett and Marvin "Shake" Tiller who were involved in a love triangle with Barbara Jane Bookman played by actress Jill Clayburgh. Although the promo photo was taken at the Orange Bowl, most of the football scenes were filmed at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas.
Burt Reynolds didn't just act like a football player. He was an accomplished running back during his days at Palm Beach High School in the early 1950s. He earned All State and All Southern honors during his senior year. Then known as Buddy Reynolds, he went on to attend Florida State on football scholarship, where his roommate was Lee Corso. Reynolds football career at FSU later fizzled due to injuries. He would later find his true calling while studying drama.
