Beto Wouldn't Use The Power of the State To Keep Businesses and Local Government From Making Decisions About Public Health

A big difference right there in leadership by allowing local people make local decisions that they think is best for them. Wonder how much time has been spent and $ expended in court to keep Texans from making decisions for themselves.

How would Beto O’Rourke respond to the omicron variant? ‘I’d get out of the way’

“We should not right now be talking about the fact that 73,000 of our fellow Texans are dead,” O’Rourke said. “That was absolutely unneccesary and so many of those deaths could have been prevented through the kind of leadership we need in Texas going forward.”

Hours after the first infection involving the omicron variant of the coronavirus was reported in the United States, Texas gubernatorial candidate Beto O’Rourke said Wednesday that he would respond to the new variant by getting out of the way of schools and businesses that want to mandate masks and vaccines.

He also directed pointed criticism toward Gov. Greg Abbott’s handling of the pandemic, saying that many of the more than 73,000 COVID-19 deaths in Texas could have been prevented under different leadership.

“We should not right now be talking about the fact that 73,000 of our fellow Texans are dead,” O’Rourke told The Dallas Morning News. “That was absolutely unnecessary and so many of those deaths could have been prevented through the kind of leadership we need in Texas going forward.”

O’Rourke’s comments came after he met with a group of several Asian American business owners and entrepreneurs in an Addison office building Wednesday night. A recurring theme during the roundtable discussion, O’Rourke said, was how Abbott’s handling of the pandemic during its early months generated confusion among business owners.

“What they shared with me is that if we had just taken this seriously from the beginning, not only could we have saved more lives— most importantly, by far — but we could have also returned to a fully participating economy much sooner than we did,” O’Rourke said. “And so we’ve got to have leadership that follows the science, follows the best public health advice, and can be trusted to keep the lights on.”

He stopped short, however, of saying he would implement any lockdowns or restrictions in response. The omicron variant, which was first identified last month by scientists in South Africa, has now spread to more than a dozen countries. The New York Times reported late Wednesday that President Joe Biden will extend a requirement for travelers to wear masks on trains, planes and buses to mid-March. The order had initially been set to expire in January.

If he were governor now, O’Rourke said his first response would be to “get out of the way of local businesses who want to protect their own employees and who want to protect their customers, but who are prohibited by the governor now from being able to do that through his anti-mask mandate.” His comments came hours after the U.S. 5th Circuit Court of Appeals halted a federal judge’s injunction against Abbott’s ban on school mask mandates, allowing that ban to be re-implemented.

“Let’s allow — at a minimum— businesses, local communities, schools, to do the right thing for the people in their communities, and then in addition, at a statewide level, let’s follow the best science and public health guidance... Regardless of the political consequences or how it polls, let’s just do the right thing.”

You mean like letting local gunshop owners decide which guns are ok to sell to their customers?  No government TAKING their ARs away?  Eh, Larry?

No, like allowing the local governments decide what people can buy in regards to guns.  He would also allow for them to have the ability to put cities on quarantine.  This wouldn't effect any county or city that is run by Conservatives, but it would give Democrat run cities more control over their citizens with mask mandates and whatever mandates they would come up with for the "safety" of the people.  Beto is trying to lose this election with what he says he will do.  I know that Harris Co. would have remained unopened until probably October of last year.  We would also be under a mask mandate currently.  That would have been terrible for me.
