There is no Kris Boyd, no Demarco Boyd, no Blake Lynch, no Nick Smith, no Kollin Hurt, no Chase Tate, Jamel Jackson, not to mention that team had it's own Fluellen, as well as a phenomenal QB in its own right in Mclane Carter (nearly 4,000 yards, 47 TDs and just 2 INTs). I'm not saying 2021 isn't a great Gilmer team by any means. But that 2014 group was insanity. Nobody was stopping that team, especially not that 2014 Celina team. The Bobcats were a good team that year, not great, not anywhere in the discussion of truly GREAT Celina teams. Defensively, they were soft, and anyone from Celina who wasn't a parent of one of the players would have told you that. Next thing, Celina runs a completely different offense (in terms of base looks) than they did in 2003, 2014-16. The Bobcats no longer employ a base Full house look, nor do they run a traditional spread look, which they were doing in 2014-16. In addition to that, Celina's offense is in its second year under a new offensive coordinator, who played and studied at Baylor. Travis McClain has done a fantastic job as a second-year OC, and he's changed the offensive philosophy and mindset of the Bobcats. Bobcats have been employing a hybrid offense that utilizes a single-back set with an H-back, and (typically) twins to one side with a single receiver opposite of them. Although, last week, we ran that look just 2-3 times and were running a single/2-back look, replacing the H-back with a tight end. Defensively ... I'm not even going to disagree with you that much lol. It's always been a headscratcher to me why we would run a traditional 10-1 or 10-1 Special against the Buckeyes. It's just a zero-margin-for-error defense against an offense that can create so many problems and attack in a litany of ways. Now, in 2015, we did not run a traditional 10-1 or Special, and I highly, highly doubt the Buckeyes are going to see a man-free or cover-zero, or 10-1/Special, etc. I'm not sure what base look they'll show, but I doubt it'll be man-press-free. Aaron Ford at defensive coordinator has done a fantastic job of mixing up looks and coverages, and he's been able to shut down/stifle some really good offenses this season. The Bobcats starting defense held Melissa to 14 points and Argyle to 16 points. Both of those teams were really talented and had plenty of speed to burn. They don't run the same looks and style as Gilmer, but from an athletic standpoint, Celina has seen speed, and they have not been overmatched by it this season. In terms of your keys to deep playoff football, I agree, with the exception of the running game. I think it's imperative to be able to take over a game on the ground when the situation dictates. I think the Bobcats have an advantage in the trenches on both sides of the ball, and with that advantage, Celina has been able to pound the football with Gabe Gayton at RB, who is quick, and very, very strong, complimented by Peterson, who is also quick and strong and can pound is way to 3-5 yards per carry. When it comes to turnovers, it could go either way. Bobcats had one bad game against Argyle, and apart from that, we've taken care of the football pretty well. QB play, absolutely the nod goes to Tennison and rightfully so. Dude is a DUDE 100% certified DUDE. But I wouldn't go so far as to say Bentley for Celina isn't athletic. He's an OU commit for baseball, if he ever even makes it to Norman ... more likely that he gets drafted out of high school in the summer of 2023. He hasn't had to run much this season, but he can when he needs to, and he's tough as nails and really strong. He hasn't had to run much this season, but he can when he needs to, and he's tough as nails and really strong. Don't know if that answers any or all of your questions, buckeyefandom, but I enjoy the conversation. Good stuff indeed! ย Much appreciated. From what I have seen on film for Celina (Argyle and Melissa games includedโฆ but they were very early in the season) It seems the Celina QB can throw from a clean pocket pretty well. But it makes sense now that you say he is a baseball player. Once Argyle got pressure and he started turning it over, Celina closed ranks and went to a straight power running gameโฆ lead left and lead right out of that 3 back set they run to the power side of an unbalanced line. That is just smash mouth football, and if I was Celina that is what I would use as my first line of defense, keeping Gilmerโs offense off the field by running clock and moving chains. If Celina does that, they need to keep it a 1 score game at least and stay out of catch-up mode.ย I do think Celina can throw the ball against Gilmer if the QB has time, but I would think that would be only in โhave toโ situations. And the more they have to, the more the game tilts towards a shootout. ย That favors Gilmer. It is โpick your poisonโ trying to stop Gilmerโs offense. I donโt think this will be the best defense Gilmer has faced. But that is not saying Celina doesnโt have a good defense. I just donโt think Celina has faced an offense like Gilmer. Winning the battle in the trenches is a threat to Gilmer if it keeps the ball out of the offenseโs hands and limits the possessions.ย Letโs just say the more Celina can run the ball and move the clock, the better chance they have to win. If Gilmer gets the ball (coin flips, turnovers, special teams, etc.) I donโt think Celina will stop Gilmer from scoring. So for me it comes down to the same old story we have always seen back to 2003. Can Celina keep Gilmerโs offense off the field. That seems to be the strategic formula Celina should follow. Gilmer has won 95% of their games since 2000 when scoring 30+ points. Less than that they are .500. I think that is the real โgameโ for any team left that can beat Gilmer.ย That 2014 could score against anybody at any time. That was their best defense as well. Even in the 2014 State Championship game, WOS played a perfect first half and limited Gilmerโs opportunities. In the second half, adjustments were made defensively and WOS collapsed. This yearโs offense for Gilmer is very comparable. No knock on Carter or KB or Blake or anyone on that team. Obviously it was loaded talent wise. But Gilmer leaned a lot on that talent then and was fortunate nobody ran out of gas beyond the โBig 3โ. This year the talent levels and speed are comparable, and spread a lot wider and deeper throughout the entire roster. In 2014 you could point to 4 guys and say โD1 Talentโ. ย In 2021 you can point to more than that, but they are not all Srs.ย No question the water is as deep as the Buckeyes will see it with Celina and then whoever is next if Gilmer wins. But the Carthage teams Gilmer faced last year outmatched Gilmer on every front. The Carthage defense and team they played this year did not overmatch Gilmer. But they did outplay the Buckeyes for 3 quarters. And I canโt see that Celina, even playing Argyle saw the same caliber of speed and athleticism Carthage or Gilmer or WOS rolls out. Not the film I watched. I think Celina even had issues with Paris athletically, they just were not skilled enough as a team to score consistently on Celina.ย Regardless, the information is outstanding and highly appreciated! And I agree 100% with your assessment of it coming down to Celina winning in the trenches enough offensively to eat so much time they limit Gilmerโs snaps. PG is a โpower teamโ that has seen a lot of Gilmer the past 5 years and figured out the formula for beating Gilmer. Last week they held Gilmer to 36 total offensive plays and won ToP 3:1. But the score was 22-0 at the half and the game was over. PG is huge (bigger than Celina) and very athletic. But I think Celina is a much deeper, better and more complete football team right now than PG. It will be interesting to see if Celina commits to ground and pound or tries to go toe to toe with the Buckeye offense. I think both teams on the other side of the bracket are rooting hard for Celina to win. All the โC Teamsโ left play the same style as Celina. That is what makes watching Gilmer compete against the best teams in the state with their philosophy so interesting.ย MikeHonchoโฆ this is the internet. Works like your TV. If you donโt like whatโs on, just change the channel. Rightly said, for Celina to win, they will need to make the most of their opportunities, get a few turnovers and limit Gilmerโs possessions. They also need to have a Grey start and play from in front on the scoreboard and ground and pound. For Gilmer, they need to do what the 2014 bunch did and have the great start (winning the coin flip wouldnโt hurt) and get out to at least a 3 drive 1st quarter, scoring on 2 of them. If Gilmer gets a 2 possession lead, Celina is going to feel pressure to throw and get back in it. They should avoid that temptation until they absolutely have no choice. Itโs the semis! This is why they play them on the field!
MattStepp
PigskinPrep is a computer formula (its what we use for our point spreads) there are zero alterior motives behind the point spread its literally just data that spits out a value and the value difference in the two teams is how the point spread is calculated. This could be a tie ball game and one that they should just create another special classification to have three State Champions in this classification in 2021.ย Now, I'm just stalling until I can toss a coin to see which one can win this thing. Another one of those games that should be played for the State Championship. Something is wrong with the system when it seems like these should be the two best teams in Texas... Okay, my coin flip fell on Celina's side of the quarter... Celina 36 Gilmer 35....I really do not have clue.ย ย

Somebody's gotta win. Somebody's gotta lose. It's just the time of year where a top-tier team has to go home at the end of the week. Only one team can end the season on a win. Just the nature of the beast. A loss doesn't invalidate the losing team's season or effort or anything like that. Your prediction is about as good as mine could be. I know either team would be thrilled with a 1-point win. If the Bobcats can hold Gilmer to 35 points or less, I really like our chances.
buckeyefandom
Last team to beat Gilmer in a true shootout was a guy named GJ Kinne in Canton in 2006 I think? That was a state playoff record doe points scored at the time if I remember. I donโt expect that kind of game Friday. That may keep us all there until Midnight! I especially agree about all 4 teams left being capable of winning it all, but Gilmer seems to be the strongest of the bunch offensively. Whataburgers are open 24/7. ย So weโll be good from here to Christmas! Canโt wait to see what happens. ย Good luck to all four great teams. Their system is built on scoring in as few plays as possible and scoring in bunches. It's hard to stop. Their route concepts are a thing of beauty to watch. But it all goes awry, as do most offenses, when you get pressure on and contain the QB. Celina HAS to do that on Friday. Full stop. Only one team has done it successfully this season. Bobcats will hope to be No. 2 on that list. When they get chances, Celina will have to capitalize. Like any team that plays Gilmer, you can ill afford to drive into the red zone and come away empty handed. You must sustain drives and you must get points. Bobcats have an otherwordly kicker, so it won't take too much real estate on the Buckeyes end of the field to come away with at least 3 points. But it'll take more than that to win, obviously. There are going to be some downright nasty battles in the trenches on Friday, I can guarantee that. If hard-hitting, big-heavies pushing each other around isn't your thing, best stay home, because that's where this game is going to be won or lost.
