Stoney’s 2022 Cowboys Offensive Off Season Preview

Recommended Posts

Quarterbacks

Dak Prescott - $34.5m 68.8% 4,449 yards 37tds 10ints 104.2 passing rating

Cooper Rush- $1.03m 63.8% 422 yards 3 tds 1 int 105.1 passing rating

Dak had a good season stat wise. The playoffs were a different story. He’s still your QB1 going forward. Cooper Rush had a great game against Minnesota in Week 8. 325 yards, 2 TDs one of which was the game winner. You have Will Grier and Ben DiNucci as developmental QBs. What you do with QB2 is completely up to how you value wins. A short term injury to Dak versus a season ending injury to Dak. Short term Dallas can tread water but an upgrade would be nice. Long term, you are rooting for losses and high draft picks. A day 3 draft pick or a veteran on a cheap deal.

Running Backs

Zeke Elliott- $18.22m 237 carries 1,002 yards 10 TD 58.9ypg

Tony Pollard- $1.13m 130 carries 719 yards 2 TD 47.9ypg

Corey Clement- UFA 33 carries 140 yards 8.2ypg

Zeke’s contract is the worst in the league. It took a 17th game added to the season for him to hit 1,000 yards. His YPG have dropped every year since 2016. He played through a PCL injury. Dallas is on the hook for $18m for him this year. Dallas is stuck paying a RB2, while Tony Pollard has looked like a RB1 in his role. Coming into the last year of his rookie contract Dallas should be looking to extend him on a cheap deal or draft his replacement. Corey Clement was a nice special teams vet who is a unrestricted free agent. A day 3 pick or an UDFA can replace him.

Wide Recievers

Amari Cooper - $22m 104 targets 68 catches 865yards 8 TD

Cedrick Wilson- UFA 61 targets 45 catches 602yards 6TD

Malik Turner- UFA 16 targets 12 catches 149yards 3TD

Ceedee Lamb- $3.82m 120 targets 69 catches 1,102yards 6TD

Michael Gallup- UFA 62 catches 35 catches 445yards 3TD

Simi Fehoko- $885,000

Noah Brown- UFA 25 targets 16 catches 184yards

This is a position that could look totally different by the time the season starts. Rumors swirling that Amari Cooper will be a salary cap cut. You have 4 unrestricted free agents in Wilson, Turner, Gallup and Brown. Losing Cooper would be a huge loss. WR1B to Lamb’s WR1A. Gallup could be re-signed if Cooper is cut. The ACL injury could lower his price to a Cowboys friendly deal. Cedrick Wilson came on as a WR3 in Gallup’s absence. Malik Turner showed flashes. Noah Brown is a solid special teamer. Simi Fehoko spent a year on the practice squad. I could see Dallas bringing back Gallup and Wilson for the right price. I could see Malik Turner or Simi Fehoko taking Wilson’s spot if his price isn’t right. Dallas cuts Cooper keep an eye on a day 1,day 2 WR to replace him.

Tight Ends

Dalton Schultz  - UFA 104 targets 78 catches 808yards 8TD

Blake Jarwin - $6.25m 17 targets 11 catches 96 yards 2TD

Sean McKeon- $899,000 6 targets 4 catches 27 yards 1 TD

Jeremy Sprinkle- UFA 3 targets 3 catches 31 yards

Another position that Dallas could see some change at. Dalton Schultz has played like the TE that Dallas payed Blake Jarwin to be. Schultz had a career year which should lead to big money in free agency. Dallas can cut Jarwin for $2m in dead cap and save $4.25m in cap space. Sean McKeon has been a nice undrafted free agent find. Jeremy Sprinkle was the TE3 replacing Blake Bell in that role. The only TE I feel good about their spot on this team is McKeon. Depending on who returns out of Schultz and Jarwin, he could be TE2. A day 3 TE or UDFA TE could come in to pair with Schultz/Jarwin or McKeon/Sprinkle.

Offensive Tackles

Tyron Smith- $17.5m

La’el Collins- $15.25m

Terrence Steele- $898,000

Tu Nsekhe - UFA

Josh Ball- $949,000

This position when healthy is one of the better groups in the NFL. The issue is that is becoming rarer and rarer. Tyron Smith is 31. He’s headed into his 12th season. He played only 11 games out of 17. That’s 6 straight years of missing games. La’el Collins was paid starting RT money. Last year at times, UDFA Terrence Steele looked like the better player. With the issues Dallas had at LG, Collins might be the answer there. Terrence Steele was one of the most improved players on this 2021 team. He may have earned a shot to compete for the RT job. Ty Neskhe is a veteran UFA. Josh Ball is a 4th round pick who likes to beat on women in his spare time. A developmental LT to groom behind Tyron Smith is becoming more and more of a necessity as the years go by. A day 2 or day 3 pick would be a step in the right direction.

Offensive Guards

Connor Williams- UFA

Connor McGovern- $2.76m

Zack Martin- $20.19m

Zack Martin had another All Pro season in a Hall of Fame career. Too bad the same couldn’t be said about Williams or McGovern. Connor Williams’ play was bad. He shouldn’t be brought back. Connor McGovern tried to replace him. That experience showed he was a much better Fullback than LG. Dallas has a hole at LG that needs to be fixed this off-season. With pick 24 Dallas could have their choice of rookie guards to pick from to solidify the line.

Center

Tyler Biadasz - $1.01m

Matt Farniok-  $850,000

Biadasz replaced Travis Frederick after his retirement. He’s been solid but not the Pro Bowl, All Pro that Frederick was. Matt Farniok was a 7th round backup. Could you upgrade from Biadasz? Probably. Should you? With what’s looking to be some sizable potential holes on this team at more important positions, you live with these two for another year.

Specialists

K Greg Zeurlein-  $2.83m 29/35 FG 42/48xp

P Bryan Anger-  UFA 65 punts 48.4ypp

LS Jake McQuaide-  UFA

Greg Zeurlein was a guy you didn’t really feel comfortable seeing out there to attempt a FG. Bryan Anger was a Pro Bowler and All Pro in his first year in Dallas. Jake McQuaide replaced Cowboys legend LP Ladouceur. Dallas should look at competition for Zeurlein’s job but McCarthy and Bones Fassel trust him. Anger and McQuaide should be brought back.

Draft Needs

Tight End

Connor Williams’ play was bad. He shouldn’t be brought back.

Ol’ Stoney isn’t too bad on some of his predictions. Losing Cooper and Wilson. Gallup coming back. Jarwin getting cut. Connor walking. Zeurlein I’ll take half credit for.
