4A Girls Basketball Playoffs Oddity

Looks like 4A Girls District 7.......Argyle, Decatur, Krum, and Bridgeport......all 4 district qualifiers for the playoffs made it to this Regional Quarterfinal Round coming up. Argyle(34-0) and ranked #1 in every poll will play Bridgeport(24-10).  Bridgeport was the 4th place team in District 7.  Meanwhile......Decatur(32-5) will play Krum(26-10).  Decatur qualified as the Runner-up slot in District 7 while Krum qualified in the 3rd spot.  Not sure how many times this has happened at any classification in either Boys or Girls Basketball Playoffs......but it can only happen at this Regional Quarterfinals Round.  All 4 teams are so good that ANY of the 4 teams could win in these two matches.  Naturally the Argyle Lady Eagles and Decatur Lady Eagles are both favored, but Bridgeport and Krum are very capable and very good.  I saw where the Gilmer Girls won their District 15 and Paris qualified in the 4th spot.  These two District 15 foes will  meet in the Regional Quarterfinal Round this week also.  That in itself is unusual......for a W team to meet the F team out of the same district in this round.

You have to figure in that all three teams......Decatur, Krum, and Bridgeport......each team had two of their losses to Argyle in District 7 play.  Otherwise, their records would be even better.  Decatur lost 2 games in District 7(to Argyle), while Bridgeport and Krum both lost 5 of their games in District 7......they tied  with the same district standing at 7-5.  Argyle and Decatur won both games against Bridgeport and Krum......and then Brigdeport and Krum split their two games with each other.....hence 5 losses in district for them.  Castleberry, Lake Worth, and Springtown had no chance whatsoever in this district, for sure.  But Lake Worth is good this season in Boys Basketball.

Here is one more oddity......over in Region 3, the winner of District 19 was Burnet(17-12), while the fourth place team was Lake Belton(22-10).  I don't know how Burnet at (17-12) won that district and then won the first two rounds to get to this Quarterfinal Round, and I really don't know how Lake Belton got 4th place in that district.  But here are both of these two district foes meeting in this Quarterfinal Round.  Upsets do occur, but now we are in Round 3 of the playoffs......so normally you have district winners vs district winners or district runner-ups in this round.

Bridgeport, Paris, and Lake Belton are ALL 4th-place district teams in their respective districts to make it to this Quarterfinal Round this season in the UIL Girls 4A Basketball Playoffs.  That is another oddity......usually you don't see  # 4's in this round, much less having THREE #4's make it.  I will be watching to see if any of these #4's wins this coming week in these matchups.

Argyle, Decatur, Krum, and Bridgeport are in Region 1.......so two very good basketball teams in Region 1 will be eliminated this week.  I'm certain the rest of the Region 1 teams still playing are licking their chops on these two games......hoping Argyle AND Decatur will get upset!   Argyle has the tougher bracket in this region if they win......playing the winner of the Levelland(28-2) vs Canyon(17-5) tilt.  Don't underestimate the Canyon Girls......their record is short of games but they play UP and have a history of titles in Girls Basketball.  Of course Levelland does too......so the winner of this matchup has the capability to win the region, even if it is against Argyle or Decatur.  The way the bracket is set up.....it is very very possible for Argyle to meet Decatur for the Region 1 title.  Decatur's bottom side of this regional bracket has Seminole(24-4) against Big Spring(20-13). Obviously Seminole is highly favored in that matchup, but you just never know what might happen in one playoff game.

Now I'm hearing that Canyon's record is really(24-5) and guess what?  They are the defending State Champion from last season. They ended up (29-1) for the year......defeating Hardin-Jefferson Girls 56-55 in the State Final.  Levelland's 2 losses came to Argyle and Decatur this season.  Should be a heckuva 3rd Round Matchup.

Good thing Fairfield is a 3a 😆

I would love to see the Argyle Ladies Eagles(34-0) vs the Fairfield Ladies Eagles(35-1) play this season.  What would be really cool is if both teams won out and won their SC classifications, then played each other right a day after the UIL State Championships were over with......at the same venue.  We could have the SC Champs from 6A play the 5A State Champs, then 4A vs 3A, then 2A vs 1A......3 big games scheduled all in one day. I'm certain that would draw tons of fans.

Of course you would start with Game 1 between 1A vs 2A at 10 am, then Game 2 between 3A vs 4A at 1 pm, and cap it off with Game 3 between 5A vs 6A at 4 pm.  Then you could do it the next weekend for the Boys State Championships.

I think just the fact that everybody would be CURIOUS to see how competitive any of these games would be......would draw some serious Texas High School basketball fans, including some playoff team coaching staffs, too!    And what a capper to end the season, Huh?  Let's raise the bar higher now.

Actually......the very first game of the basketball season for many teams in Texas begins with a tournament......many times with 2 quality teams opposing each other from different classifications.  So to end the season in a similar mode would not be OUT OF ORDER.  You start and end the season the same way.....except with the winners of each classification playing the next classification to you for the final contest of the season.

So much for Oddities, Huh?  But in basketball, any team in these playoffs could win against their opponent at any point in these playoffs.  Same at the next level with March Madness.  Usually the higher ranked teams prevail, but not always.  We see upsets every season in March.....both in high school playoffs and at March Madness.

With the move to 5A will the Argyle girls be a top 10 team in the future?  I see Cedar Park, McKinney North and a couple of Frisco schools in the top 5 now.   How do they compare with those schools?

Good question, but I don’t think they will miss a beat honestly. They always play some 5A-6A teams in non district anyways.

More importantly their underclassmen are loaded all the way down to junior high.

The Gilmer Girls have a record this season of (28-6) against the Paris Girls now at (21-12).  Good job by the Paris Girls to get to this round, and good luck to both teams this week.

Lady Buckeyes have several 3 point sharpshooters this year, and are good defensively. Paris is very athletic and aggressive. These two teams split their games in district. Should be a good one!!

We stay with shooters and the only reason they beat us in Paris is out of the 63 or so points they has 40 something came from the foul line. What’s crazy is we played north Lamar and the guys they reffed our game is a parent from there and the other was the security guard

40 points from the FT line? That’s gotta be a record! Gilmer won by 3 in Gilmer and Paris won by 3 in Paris. This game should live up to its potential!

The Argyle Ladies Eagles are losing one Senior starter and have beaten 6A and 5A teams early this season before district play.....just like always.  They have beefed up their nondistrict schedule to include some pretty darn good basketball programs......same with the Boys basketball scheduling.  The Argyle Boys won State last season with their only loss in a tournament against Highland Park.  They are good again this season......even though they lost some key seniors last year.

Argyle Ladies defeat Bridgeport 60-36 to go (35-0) and advance to the Regional Semis in Lubbock.  They will play the winner of the Canyon/Levelland game Tues. night.

Decatur defeated Krum in a tightly contested game 37-34 to go (33-5) on the season, and will face Seminole(25-4) who won BIG against Big Spring 85-12.

Looks like both Argyle and Decatur will have their hands full in the Region 1 Semifinals against those West Texas powers. Region 1 looks very strong in 4A Girls Basketball again this season.  Whichever team survives to come out of Region 1 will be very tough to beat in the State Tournament.

I think the state champ will be between Argyle and Hardin Jefferson

The Argyle Girls have a very tough match coming up against either Canyon(24-5) or Levelland(28-2), and the game will be in Lubbock in very hostile territory.  Canyon won State against Hardin Jefferson last year 56-55.......and ended up(29-1).  Both those teams get tougher in the playoffs each year.  Then if Argyle wins.....they will have another tough matchup against the Decatur/Seminole winner.  It's just very very tough to keep winning every single game all season against really good basketball schools.....even if Argyle may be favored and has what might be the most successful Girls basketball program in 4A.

At this level.....what it really comes down to is how your best shooters are playing at this particular juncture of the season.  Argyle's defense is seriously good, but they are weak at the free throw line.  If they get into a tight game at the end, they could miss some critical attempts at the charity line and be in for a real fight to the finish.  Argyle does have the shooters from the outside, and definitely are very good off the boards.  And they get alot of steals from their trap defense also.
