Something else.

Shifting demographics and population migration. Toxic communities and administrations. Added external and internal pressures caused by the proliferation of social media.

Take your pick.

You mean they were sane BEFORE Covid???

Hmm, maybe a better way to say it is: their collective insanity became more apparent due to Covid.  😛

Since covid, lots of teachers, coaches, and even AD's are getting out.  As was said above lots of administrations have become impossible to deal with as they seemed to have gone insane after covid.  Communities have also changed drastically during this time.  Add in rogue parents who have become even more emboldened through political rhetoric, on either side, and you are now seeing the result on education.  There are many on this site that will disagree, but they are probably not in the mix of it.  The kids are still the same kids we all were during our youth, the parents and surrounding environment around them has changed and has caused 'the job' to much harder than it was as little as 5 years ago.

Don’t forget to add the “me generation” from parents who are over  25 and only they know how to coach and what play to call.😁

yepp, the generation of parent that allowed this generation of parent to get trophies for everything and started the grumbling of coaches and teachers are always wrong started it.  Like all things, it multiplies over a generation.

I think with everything that has happened and the added stresses and duties that have gotten heaped on many teachers/coaches/admins...it becomes an easier decision to walk away where many of the above would have hung on and kept "doing what they do" until they felt a little more financially comfortable (if that ever happens) or unfortunately until health may whisper in their ear "it's time".

I came to the public school side of things late after 12 years of college coaching and some years in the "business world" before getting "called" again to coach...so I need some more years to "retire" but my wife went straight into this world and could retire about the same time -- her retirement and regular pay looks so much nicer. Our world has changed a lot here and she constantly points at the fact that I could easily go make more at a company and not have the crazy parents that "think we're babysitters" or have to deal with the rules that are changing (ratcheting up) it seems by the semester with the same pay - if not less (when you consider our "year steps" aren't matching inflation).

My brother is getting out of education after many years teaching. He currently teaches at a large ISD in the DFW area and said the parents are the problem, as well as the  administration not disciplining the kids. He said the kids are terrible and when you call the parents, the parents comment "what do you want me to do with him". He went on to say that the new online testing through the state is going to be a major disaster next year.

Add to it that most teachers can easily get jobs  making more money.

Yeah, TEA and the state is going to have to get their heads out of the sand and start taking better care of teachers (increased pay in particular) and quit hammering them on the policy and procedure of it all.

But Mike Morath and his minions have ALL the answers...just ask him.

At a time the state should be ramping up support for educators the state is focused on pushing for vouchers to make private schools more money.

No state support, teaching during covid, more and more legislation and laws that make teachers lives more difficult, parents that complain how or what is taught in class, parents that complain about playing time, parents that complain about punishments, parents that complain about play calls, parents, a job that depends on the ability of 14-18 year olds to perform and do what they are taught, a job that will always end in your resignation because expectations are never satisfied. All to be told "You get summers off (which no coach does), and you don't do it for the money you do it for the kids".

or

Make more money, have better benefits,  job doesn't follow you home, no one outside of your job yells about how your job is done, never move your family, less hours, less stress and more.
