Farther Along

Farther Along is a song we sing from time to time. It is number 001 in our song book, and we’re going to sing it at the conclusion of the lesson. This song has a very good meaning if we listen to the words as we sing. It tells us that farther along in our lives and our growth we will understand more about the mysteries of life, the uncertainties of life, and the inequities of life. Today we want to take a closer look at this song in order to motivate ourselves to be faithful to God when we come across the mysteries, uncertainties, and inequities of life on this Earth.

We’ll start by reading something John had to say.

I John 3: 1 - 3

Faithful Christians want to know about the afterlife.  There are many questions that all of us have. What will it be like? Where will we go? What will we do? How will we exist?

In the passage we just read, John frankly admits that he doesn’t know what we will be like.  However, he does say that we will be like Him. For John this is enough. He’s satisfied to have these questions answered at a later time. He’ll find out farther along.  “Farther Along” is an old familiar favorite. It was written in 1911 and attributed to W. B. Stevens. The words of this song are comforting and help us to go through difficult times in life. Today we will consider some thoughts based upon this familiar hymn.

Farther along, we’ll understand more about the mysteries of life. There are many things in life that are a mystery. Even Moses didn’t know everything.

Deuteronomy 29:29

Neither did Job.

Job 26:14

We can ask more questions than we will ever have the answers to. We have to admit to ourselves that there are things that God did not choose to reveal to us, and we should not concern ourselves with those things. He revealed to us all that we really need. He gave us the answers to all things that we need spiritually in this life.

2 Peter 1:3

Titus 2:11-12

2 Timothy 3:16-17

When we have questions about things God has not chosen to reveal to us through His Word, we must rely on our faith for the answer.

Hebrews 11:1

We must trust that even though we don’t know, God does know all the answers.

Ephesians 3: 20 - 21

Farther along, all of the mysteries in life will be revealed.

Farther along, all the uncertainties of life will be revealed. There are many times when life is uncertain. We sometimes feel like we don’t know who to turn to or where to go. Sometimes uncertainty can only be alleviated by actually going through and experiencing the thing we are uncertain about.  When we place our faith in God at such times, He will help us get through. Let’s look at the example of Abraham. God said that Abraham would have a son by Sarah. This was beyond the scope of Abraham’s experience. He had never heard of someone Sarah’s age having a child.

Romans 4:19-21

God assures us that when we are uncertain about life, He is there. He tells us that when we are uncertain about the necessities of life, He is there.

Matthew 6:25 - 33

He is there when we are uncertain about things that are beyond our control.

Matthew 8: 23 - 26

He is there for us when we are suffering self doubt.

Matthew 14: 28 - 33

Farther along we’ll be better prepared and able to endure life’s uncertainties.

Farther along, we’ll be better prepared for the inequities of life. Life has a certain amount of inequity. There is no guarantee for justice in this life. Criminals receive little or no punishment whether it be for rape, child abuse, murder, etc. Large companies can cheat and steal from their employees without consequences. Children are orphaned by selfish parents. It seems as if there is no justice. We want justice, but we must realize that not all wrongs will be made right in this life. Some wrongs are only righted after death. When we are wronged, we must place our trust in God knowing that justice will be served.

Ecclesiastes 5:8

Justice is served through the Cross. Jesus' death on the cross was for the sins of mankind. This is God’s merciful way to bring justice. If sinners will call upon the Lord in faith and obedience, God will accept the blood of Christ as the price for their sins.

Titus 2:11 - 14

1 Timothy 2:5-6

2 Corinthians 5:21

Romans 3:23-26

If sinners do not accept God’s justice through the cross, then they must accept God’s justice for eternity.

Romans 12:19

Hebrews 10:30

Jude 1:7

Farther along God will make all wrongs right.

Farther along, we’ll know all about it. Farther along, we’ll understand why. We’ll be able to understand more about the mysteries of life. We’ll be able to understand more about the uncertainties of life. We’ll be able to accept that injustice will always exist, and know that God will make it all right eventually. Farther along, we’ll understand why, so cheer up and don’t let things get you down while you’re here on the earth. Let God handle all of your problems.
