A quick rundown: A "mass shooting" is defined as 4 or more people being shot (excluding the shooter) whether or not they die. In 2020, 513 people people died in these incidents. Fatalities in mass shootings are a small fraction of the gun murders that occur nationwide every year. There were 13,620 gun murders and non-negligent manslaughters in the US in 2020. Of those: 59% were via handgun, 3% were rifles, 1% were shotguns, and 36% were "other" or "not stated". So if you do the math, "mass shootings" account for 3.7% of the gun murders in the US in 2020.
