What division is Boyd currently in, and what are they ranked?

6A. 8-3 last year.

With Allen and Prosper more than likely playoff bound, Boyd is probably 6A D2 bound with Guyer out of that district. I do think that there's a pretty good chance that McKinney High > Boyd for that 4th slot though.

Honestly, I feel pretty damn good about this matchup. Our offense should have a show, and that isn't even our strongest side of the ball.

It definitely sounds like they're replacing a ton on the defensive side of the ball. McKinney High would've been a fantastic test for our defense, but hopefully Boyd is able to give us a good test.

Not saying Longview needs stylepoints but would it be concerning if this is less than a 21 point spread?

With how we've struggled in opening games of the season under King, nothing would surprise me even if I do expect a large win, tbh.

Even in our title year, that required a comeback win and a touchdown in the final minute to win.

This.

Even a one-point win wouldn't be concerning, IMO. These are teenagers, and the season is only a couple weeks old. There's gonna be mistakes and miscues.

Also, this ain't 2A ball and we ain't playing some homeschooling co-op. This is a solid 6A program.

The only thing "concerning," in my view, would be injuries.

Absolute truth.

Overall, we have not been good in Game 1s under King. It has been a learning tool for the rest of the season it feels like.

Under King..
2004 - W 40-15 v. Marshall (down 15-0 before coming back)
2005 - W 28-16 at Marshall (beyond rough offensively)
2006 - L 19-15 v. West Monroe (Rebs scored w/30 secs left)
2007 - L 16-13 at Lufkin (lost a 13-0 lead)
2008 - L 21-7 at Allen (no offense really at all against the soon to be state champs)
2009 - W 28-25 vs Allen (down 17-0 at halftime before coming back)
2010 - W 31-9 at Marshall (trailed 9-3 after 1 quarter before coming back, entire game was rough)
2011 - W 30-0 vs Marshall (30-0 against an extremely, extremely bad Marshall squad, only led 10-0 at half)
2012 - L 41-8 v. Coppell (one of the worst opening day losses in program history)
2013 - L 32-24 v. Coppell (should've won this one, led the whole way until Coppell scored 20 in the 4th)
2014 - L 41-14 at Lufkin (first time I've seen a Longview squad just completely quit)
2015 - W 21-20 vs Lufkin (back and forth affair, blocked PAT saved us)
2016 - L 35-24 at Lufkin (tied going into the 4th, only to completely fall apart)
2017 - W 35-16 vs Lufkin (this one we actually dominated from the get go)
2018 - W 35-28 vs Lufkin (trailed by 7 before a massive comeback in the final half of the 4th Q)
2019 - W 24-21 at Lufkin (did everything we could to try and give Lufkin the W, even giving them a pick on our side of the field in the final minutes and still they didn't want it)
2020 - L 40-13 v. Temple (complete 2nd half implosion)
2021 - L 40-7 v. Denton Ryan (again, one of the worst opening day losses in program history)

So make no mistake, we have struggle more years than not in the first week of the season. Take our the Ws against Marshall, and it tells the true story.

But at the end of the day, it rarely has impacted our season going forward. Hoping for a big W, expecting a big W even, but wouldn't be shocked if we struggle.

Good stuff, though slightly alarming. As you said, though, it doesn't make or break our season. The same team that lost to Lufkin 41-14 turned around and beat them 43-42 in the playoffs.

You also have to consider that we've played some pretty salty teams along the way. The two Marshall teams in 04-05 were both state runner ups. Lufkin throughout the years has been strong, though on a steady decline. Denton Ryan? One of the top teams in the state. Allen? Super strong during this time, usually state champs. Even Coppell in 2012 steamrolled through an undefeated regular season and beat Allen, who won state that year.  Even 2013 Coppell only lost to Allen (state champs) and DeSoto (only lost to Allen) in close games.

Oh no doubt. The 2012 and 2014 games were horrendous, but like you said we beat Lufkin in the post season that year and in 2012 also got to the 3rd round with a pretty beat up squad.

You can definitely read on the type of season we're going to have though, most years. 2012, lost 2 district games. 2014, 0-2 to start the year, just always felt off the whole time. 2020, we struggled throughout. 2021, 2 district losses.

But, we'll be fine either way. Just hoping for no injuries more so than anything.

Yeah. Funny enough, the 2010 team started 1-3 and had defending state champions Abilene looming. Longview fell down 17-7 to them but came back to win 32-31 in overtime and went on to the semifinals, a game they should've won. They also lost to North Mesquite, though. What a weird year.

Wasn't your typical NM team though. Had Joe Bergeron in the backfield, opportunistic defense. So, if the A game wasn't brought, much like ours wasn't, anything could happen.

That was a wake up call though. The team jumped into another dimension after that. Could have and should have won state.

But that's the beauty of King coached teams. Longview definitely gets better as the season progresses. The only year that we didn't was 2019, but that was only because he couldn't get out of his own way.
