Huntsville beat Nac 61-31

Kingwood Park beat Porter 45-43

Lufkin beat Dayton 45-36

Huntsville has bounced back from a tough non-district schedule and looks to run away with this district. They have already beat LP, Nac and KP. The battle looks to be for 2nd place between Nac/LP, those two teams meet in Lufkin on Friday, Jan 20th. KP, Dayton and Porter will fight it out for the 4th seed.

Tuesdays Games

Huntsville @ Dayton-a Huntsville win will have them with basically a 4 game lead on the 4th place team.

Porter @ Nac-a Nac win and they will have a 2 game lead for a playoff spott

Lufkin @ KP-a LP win and they have a 2 game lead for a playoff spot setting up the battle with Nac for 2nd on Friday.

Looking at this District I am not sure anyone outside of Huntsville can make any type of a playoff run.

Dayton 0-1 0.000 31 59 9-16 0.360 1,177 1,347 1 L

Nac defeated Huntsville 59-35-The game was not that close, Nac missed so many layups in the game.

Lufkin defeated Dayton 59-31

Porter defeated Kingwood Park 34-24

Tuesdays Games

Nac @ Porter

Kp @ LP

Huntsville @ Dayton

Lufkin is the heavy favorite to win this district and Nac looks good to fight for the # 2 seed. Huntsville is very young lots of sophomores and a few freshman on Varsity. Looks like KP, Porter and Dayton will fight for the 3-4 seeds out of this district.  Could be a battle for 2-4 between nac, KP, Dayton and Porter. This next week should give us an idea of the pecking order in the district. Nac and LP play in Nac on Friday the 20th.

Tyler High and Texas High got into a pretty good brawl. Like one of the worst I’ve ever seen. Crazy how it’s not mentioned just about anywhere. Was still in 1st quarter. I think it should be a double forfeiture. There were coaches still on the bench just chilling as this was going on. Not sure that it wasn’t a double forfeiture though. Like I said, this hasn’t really been reported on at all. Anyways, suspensions could affect Tyler High going forward. Doubt they add on any or kick anyone off, but it was that bad to where they could. Texas High is pretty awful so it doesn’t matter for them at this point.

So, I'm assuming they did not finish the game?

its a story about the fight on tyler newspaper website.  looks like players will be suspended. Not sure either team will have all its players for a while. probably going to make a big diffrence for both teams going forward.

Sadly.....that hurts Tyler more than it does Texarkana.  The Tigers aren't fighting for a playoff spot.  But Tyler....had they gotten the W would be headed into the MP game likely undefeated.

That's a shame.  A Full strength Tyler Vs. MP game would have likely been a fantastic game.

A brawl stopped the Tyler-Texas High game in the first quarter and will count as a double forfeit.  That knocks Tyler into second place instead of staying in a tie with MP.  Meanwhile......Mount Pleasant continues to steamroll their way through district with a win over Longview.  Tyler beat Texarkana to keep pace with the Yellow Tigers.  Hallsville jumped into third place with their win over Whitehouse.  WH and Longview are tied for fourth with the Wildcats holding the tiebreaker over the Lobos.  Marshall finally got a district win thanks to Pine Tree, creating a three way tie for sixth place.

The second round of district play will start on Tuesday nights.

Outside of Mount Pleasant and Lufkin..... ETX 5A boys basketball is about as terrible as I ever remember it being.  Not sold on Longview yet....they have had too many close calls to bad teams to think they are going to make any noise in the playoffs.  Weird seeing Marshall and Texas High struggle after being the best in the district the last 15-20 seasons.

Outside of MP.....  ETX 5A girls basketball is mostly atrocious.

Boys-Nac is inconsistent and out side of the the rest of 16-5a has not been good record wise. nac is better than last year but no where near where they have been.

Feels like forever ago that Nac, Lufkin and Marshall battled for the district and went few round deep in the playoffs. Lufkin is full of seniors so they will lose their entire starting lineup after this year.

Girls

The girls' side has been horrible in non-district for 16-5a. I don't know if it is lack of options for little league basketball and club basketball or just the concentration on other sports in ETX. Nac lost probably their best athlete for basketball when she signed with SFA to play softball.

Lufkin's freshmen are undefeated and the Lufkin JV has only one loss this year.  They will return Soph Marcellus Parks and Fresh Aaron Brown to the Varsity next year.  These next two groups will be just as good, if not better than than the 2022-2023 team.

Didn't say they weren't going to be as good, just commenting that they are senior heavy.

True, point taken, however they won't lose their entire starting line up. Brown is a starter although Nac didn't get to experience the talent of this 6'7" young Freshman .  They have played without him for a little over 3 weeks now and have missed his 14 -15 points per game.  I think the entire district will be better next year.

The game against Nac all the starters were seniors.  Nac also has a pretty good JV, Freshman team and the 8th graders coming up could be special. The 8th Grade group is very fast and athletic and has 4 ball handlers. They may have more ball handlers on the 8th grade team than the Varsity team has now.

Nac is missing a Post players from pretty much all of their groups.

Nac also starts 4 juniors and will return 8 of their top 10 kids on varsity next year. Nac has been inconsistent but went 3-1 in the highly competitive Waco Midway tournament against 6A teams and 3-1 in the Montgomery tournament against 6A teams.  Nac schedule has been their toughest in years.  They had 3 kids playing on one leg against Lufkin because of injuries. They might be peaking at the right time. Hopefully

Lobos defeat Pine Tree, 47-40. 21-4 (5-3) on the year now.

Lady Lobos defeat Pine Tree, 41-29. Now 21-7 (7-3) on the year. 21 wins is now than double the combined win count of the last two seasons.

Agreed that no real playoff run is coming from either Longview squad this year, but the future has definitely begun being laid imo. Excited to see the girls in the next couple of seasons.
