IMHO….things are soooo different now than they were then.

Athletes playing in multiple sports in 5A and 6A were commonplace 30 years ago.

Nowadays…. Kids specialize in a sport and play that sport year round in elite leagues… honing their skills. Playing together in some cases for years prior to high school. That’s the norm for metro areas now.

Here in ETX we see it to a much lesser degree. Kids are still playing football and basketball.  Or football and baseball. Not as many specialists…. Therefore a lower level of talent.

There are other factors that I think attribute to ETX big schools struggling in basketball.  But the specialties/elite leagues are the biggest issue.

But that’s JMHO.

That Longview squad that won state in basketball was very very special. I don't think Longview will ever have a basketball team that talented and that good ever again.

Not sure I agree with big school basketball not being very good in East Texas.  Lets keep in mind that there are really only about 10 big schools in East Texas so you are not going to have as many that have the success of smaller schools (A, AA, AAA, AAAA) that have north of 100 schools.

Out of those 10 schools 2 made it to the regional tournament last year which means that you had 2 of the final 16 teams in 5A.  I would say that is pretty good when you look at just the raw numbers. 2 of the final 16 out of 256 schools. Also lets not forget that basketball plays in one classification not two. Mt Pleasant has been to 4 of 5 of the last regional tournaments and S Springs made it to the state tournament on top of many succesful playoff runs. If basketball was played in divisions you could argue that S Springs would have won a 5A div II championship that year and Mt Pleasant would have had a legitimate shot over the last 5 years as well.  Lufkin has also had some playoff success in  the last decade in 5A//6A.

So about 30% of the big school teams have had about as good a decade as any other point in big school East Texas basketball in my opinion.  Now if you your only measuring stick is state championships that is a different story.  However keep in mind that they only hand out 6 of those every year and not 12 like in football so your numbers are going to different if you are comparing the two sports.  I think one thing that people sometimes forget is since they started the split division they have handed out about 180 more state championships in football than any other sport.  Let that sink in for a minute especially when comparing sports.

WInning regional finals is the benchmark for determining competitiveness. Beating up on area schools is one thing, beating one DFW school to get to the regional final is another, but winning the regional final and advancing is the true measure.

It’s official.  Marshall ISD will call a bond election in May for $42 million in renovations and expansions to MHS.

No tax increase needed.

Hopefully the truth police will win this battle instead of the fear-mongers.

There was a huge shuffle in the district standings Friday night as several teams got big wins.  Hallsville's 2-0 win over Pine Tree handed the Lady Bucs their first district loss.  This puts Hallsville and PT in a virtual tie for first place as we head into the second half of district play.  Longview got a PK win over MP, lifting the Lady Lobos into third place, one point ahead of MP who now sits in fourth.  Tyler remains in the hunt, just one point behind MP and 2 behind Longview.  Whitehouse, Texas High, and Marshall round things out.

Longview boys beat Mount Pleasant, 3-2 in OT.

Longview and Mount Pleasant girls were tied at 0-0, no idea what the PK score was other than we got two saves.

Got to go to the Girls Basketball game last night. Were able to be competitive for a half, but it was very obvious from the get go that North was the bigger, faster, stronger team. Still, a fantastic bounce back season for our girls program. Nothing to hang our heads about.

Lady Lobo Softball is off to an at least 3-0-1 start. Beat Highland Park 7-0 and Granbury 6-1 in the Forney Tournament and tied Garland Sachse 2-2. Have not been able to find a result for our match up against Waco University.

I would say we might see y’all in something else but Longview sucks at all the other male sports.

Yet it's Longview's boys basketball team in the Area round of the playoffs, while Crosby...didn't even make the post season.

It's a silly chirp, at best.

The aforementioned hoops teams have never suffered from lack of talent. That much is obvious since Coach Weaver has them making a run in just his first season in charge.

I think baseball has held their own. I can't say we've been world-beaters, but we've been solid. We certainly haven't "sucked," as the previous commenter suggested.

So, what sport then? Soccer? Consistently state ranked. Track and field? Puh-LEASE. Granted, it's rare that our non-football boys teams play for State, but that doesn't mean they "suck."

All of this in a district that routinely leads the region in state academic distinctions. Not bad.

$41.9 Million bond solely for renovating MHS.  The district has already done about $15 million in work in the last 3 years that included complete renovations of Mav Gym, and Mav Auditorium and replacing the main parking lot.  A new Ag barn was also completed last year.  A covered 120 yard football pavilion was completed in 2021.

Bond will renovate the outside of the school, the cafeteria, lower commons, upper commons (every classroom), build a new Career and technology center, and update the library into a full media center.

Further improvements are in store for Maverick Stadium as well, but will not be included in the bond.

Voters will decide in May.  No tax increase needed.

I'm no longer a tax payer to MISD....but I know how important this is.  Will make every campus K-12 either brand new or like new (MHS).   Here's to hoping the people say yes like they did for the bond in 2016.

That's really impressive, and (as a Longview taxpayer) it will be more than humbling if Marshall voters pass this.

I'll be interested in how the opposition approaches this bond....... we all know they will.

In the 2015/2016 bond.... they screamed that MISD needed to renovate instead of replace all those schools K-8th.  It took us two votes to get it passed.  All new schools K-8.

Now MISD is actually trying to renovate instead of replace......   they will need a new game plan.

This should be a slam dunk...but we shall see.

I know how ETX is when it comes to bonds.  I'm still amazed MISD got the $110M passed in 2016.

Seeing Longview, Pine Tree, White Oak, Gilmer, Nacogdoches....all struggle to get bonds passed...  this won't be easy.

The good thing about MP's bond proposal 2 years ago was that there really wasnt any opposition. The high school got fully renovated. In 2002 however to replace all elementary schools was a lot harder. It took a couple years to get that one passed. They had started trying to get that bond passed in 2000. Hope Marshall can get theirs passed.
