15-5A MEN'S BASKETBALL STANDINGS
Mount Pleasant (13-0), (32-0)
Tyler (9-4), (19-9)
Longview (8-5), (24-6)
Hallsville (6-7), (19-13)
Whitehouse (5-8), (15-16)
Marshall (3-10), (14-21)
Texas High (3-10), (5-16)
Pine Tree (3-10), (11-17)

Game 13 on 2/10

Mount Pleasant beat Marshall 64-37
Longview beat Tyler 50-34
Pine Tree beat Whitehouse 71-63
Texas High beat Hallsville 75-63

The district race got a whole lot more interesting after Friday.  Longview's win over Tyler pulled the Lobos within one game of the Lions with one game to go.  Longview now has the season sweep over Tyler....so if Longview beats Hallsville on Tuesday, coupled with a Tyler loss to MP... the Lobos will clinch the #2 seed.  A Longview loss to Hallsville or a Tyler win over MP would give the #2 seed to the Lions.  Hallsville and Whitehouse both had losses to teams below them in the standings with PT's win over the Wildcats and Texas High's win over the Bobcats.  Hallsville has a one game lead over Whitehouse for the fourth and final playoff slot.  A Hallsville win over Longview or a Whitehouse loss to Marshall will clinch for the Bobcats.  BUT.... a Hallsville loss to Longview or a Whitehouse win over Marshall would force a tie for fourth.  The two teams split, so a tie breaking game would be needed.  Marshall, Texas High, and Pine Tree are all tied up for 6th place.

15-5A MEN'S SOCCER STANDINGS

Game 5 on 2/10

Mt. Pleasant beat Texas High 2-1
Tyler beat Marshall 5-1
Whitehouse beat Hallsville 6-0

This is very quickly turning into a 4 team race.... with only the seeding between the four to be decided.  Longview, Tyler, Whitehouse, and MP are the HAVES and Texas High, PT, Marshall, and Hallsville are the HAVE NOTS.

15-5A LADIES SOCCER STANDINGS
Pine Tree (5-0-0) 15 points
Mount Pleasant (4-1-0) 12 points
Hallsville (4-1-0) 12 points
Longview (3-2-0) 9 points
Tyler (1-3-0) 3 points
Texas High (1-4-0) 3 points
Whitehouse (1-4-0) 3 points
Marshall (0-4-0) 0 points

Game 5 on 2/10
Pine Tree beat Longview 2-0
Mt. Pleasant beat Texas High 4-0
Hallsville beat Whitehouse 3-1
Tyler Vs. Marshall- NO REPORT

Like the boys race.... this is quickly becoming a four team race.  Pine Tree took sole possession of first place with their first win over Longview in recent memory.  MP and Hallsville are hang tough tied for second place with Longview sitting in fourth.

Longview boys....

Goodness lol

You just never know what team you'll get from them on a nightly basis.

Coach Leggett and those Lady Lobos are headed in a nice direction though. She will have our girls back up top statewide where they belong within the next 5 years.

First playoff win since 2015 for the Lady Lobos. More wins this year than the last 3 years combined.

That's insane, but it justifies everyone who's been saying for years that there's more than enough talent for Longview to at least be competitive in basketball. The right coaching has turned things around in Year 1.

I can only imagine the kind of machine that Coach Leggett can build in a few years.

The trick is holding onto a quality coach in East Texas.

The money and the higher level of competition (esp in basketball) seen in the metro areas is appealing.

For sure, which is why the only possible "anchors" for talented coaches in ETX are strong family bonds and/or influence over facilities/staff.

If a coach feels like their district will give them most of what they want, with regard to resources, and they get to coach in front of their relatives, you have a better shot at convincing them to stay behind the obscurity of the pine curtain. But yeah, that's rarely been the case, even in smaller classifications.

It’s not official yet…..

But it looks like Marshall ISD is going to attempt a bond this spring.  Going to be in the $40 million range and will solely be concentrated on MHS.  Updates, renovations, and expansions.

This is huge. The 2015 bond (150 Million) built all new schools for grades K-8. This will mean every school in MISD K-12 is either brand new (2018) or renovated to new.

So hard to pass bonds in East Texas. Ask Gilmer, White Oak, Pine Tree, Longview, Nacogdoches.

Here’s to hoping they get it done.  It won’t raise taxes…. But in East Texas… that’s not enough reason for some people.

You and I both know what the biggest issue is for passing bonds in MOST of the 5A districts in East Texas….   It ain’t money/taxes.

Mp finished the season the same as the ladies, undefeated (33-0) after beating Tyler 73-54.  They will play Porter in Palestine next Tuesday. Tough draw for Porter. Seen all of MPs home games on youtube, not really been sloppy. The only game they were sloppy was against Hallsville and had to fight to win that one. So beating MP is not out of the question. But I expect them to represent East Texas in the playoffs against the metroplex schools.

GO TIGERS!!!

Longview won state. Been a while but it still happened.

IMHO….things are soooo different now than they were then.

Athletes playing in multiple sports in 5A and 6A were commonplace 30 years ago.

Nowadays…. Kids specialize in a sport and play that sport year round in elite leagues… honing their skills. Playing together in some cases for years prior to high school. That’s the norm for metro areas now.

Here in ETX we see it to a much lesser degree. Kids are still playing football and basketball.  Or football and baseball. Not as many specialists…. Therefore a lower level of talent.

There are other factors that I think attribute to ETX big schools struggling in basketball.  But the specialties/elite leagues are the biggest issue.

But that’s JMHO.
