Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka was a landmark 1954 Supreme Court case in which the justices ruled unanimously that racial segregation of children in public schools was unconstitutional. This led to the integration of all black schools across the nation. In Tatum, Mayflower integrated with Tatum ISD to become one school. During the Mayflower Era, Algie Harkless led the Mayflower Panthers to 47 wins over the stint of seven years. This led to being a State Finalist in 1966. On September 9th 2022, the Eagles will become Panthers for the night and honor the Mayflower Panthers against the Pittsburg Pirates.

On Friday, September 9th, the Tatum Eagles will become Honorary Mayflower Panthers.  Tonight, we would like to spotlight some interesting facts about Mayflower:

MAYFLOWER WAS A CONSOLIDATION OF COMMUNITY SCHOOLS THROUGH OUT TATUM ISD IN 1947

The first football team at Mayflower was in 1949 when Tatum Colored High School Consolidated with Mayflower

Many students went on to serve at the local, state and National level. Gussie Daniels worked in the Foreign Service and became Deputy Consul to many foreign countries. He took pride in speaking five languages and was an officer in charge of U.S. Affairs in South Africa.

A new modern high school was built in the 50’s in the community of Mayflower in the Wake of Brown vs. Topeka

From 1947-67 Mayflower was a full fledged accredited High School.

Excellence exemplified in student success

Known for excellence in science and math along with the core curriculum and athletics

Vocational Programs were outstanding along with the core curriculum

Students exposed to the National Science Foundation at an early age

High School Science Teacher and Coach Dr. Maurice Mills later became a professor at Tennessee State University

Mayflower competed in the Prairie View Interscholastic League in Academics and Athletics

Identity was a hallmark at Mayflower – Students were told that they were somebody every day and that serving is an important ingredient to success.

The most grateful students will tell you Mayflower taught them the three B’s:

How to be, How to behave, and How to become.
