 Lessons from Jude

Although it is a short book, the content of Jude speaks about our overall lives as Christians. It speaks on how it is reasonable for God to uphold punishment for the ungodly. It also shows the blessed future that is in store for the faithful. Jude originally sought to write an encouraging, devotional letter to Christians, but the Holy Spirit led him to sound an alarm for their salvation. This brotherly letter turned out to be a call to arms for Christians in the first century. For us today, it reminds and teaches us all that we have been granted through his inspired writing.
Jude 1: 1

Those who have responded to the Gospel call are Christians.
II Timothy 1: 8 - 9

God is the originator of this call.
I Peter 1: 15

This call isn’t something that the Holy Spirit reaches into you and brings about. It comes through the Gospel message.
II Thessalonians 2: 14

The Gospel is God’s power for man’s salvation.
Romans 1: 16

That’s why the apostles, and we ourselves, are told to go into the world and preach it.
Matthew 28: 18 - 20
Mark 16: 15

Contrary to the religious world, there is no mysterious inward spiritual call directly from God. There is no example found within the scriptures of such a thing.

This call is consistent with the thoughts of God’s will for all to be saved.
I Timothy 2:3-4

Therefore, we are called through the message of the Gospel for our sanctification and to help us endure the difficulties of this present world.
I Thessalonians 4: 7
I Peter 2: 21

As we respond faithfully and obediently to this call, it results in our eternal salvation.
Hebrews 9: 15

Sadly, there will be many who reject the call of the Gospel.
Acts 13:46

Jude then wants to speak of our common salvation. Instead, the Holy Spirit guides him to speak of false teachers.
Jude 1: 3

Let’s look at the common things Christians share. Although we are living in the sinful world, we have many things that form a common bond with other Christians. We all share the same faith.
II Peter 1: 1

We all look to the same Savior.
Titus 1: 4
II Timothy 1: 10

We all share in a common goal.
II Corinthians 5: 9

We all have struggles in our daily lives to overcome.
Hebrews 10: 32 - 33
Philippians 1: 28 - 30

Finally, we all desire the same eternal outcome.
I Peter 1: 9
Hebrews 10: 39

We see that Jude wanted to speak of our common faith, but was led by the Holy Spirit to warn about false teachers and how to separate them from true believers. True believers will contend for the faith. Those who are Christians will hold to and promote the revealed truth. The faith has already been revealed.
II Timothy 3: 16 - 17
II Peter 1: 3

It will never change. There are no new revelations coming.
II Timothy 1: 13

Anyone who says they have received a new revelation from God, from Jesus, or from the Holy Spirit is a liar. It’s as simple as that. However, there will be liars. As time has passed, many have sought to add to, take things away from, or change God’s Word in order to try to improve on it. As if any human can improve on the Word of God.
Galatians 1: 6 - 9
II Timothy 4: 3 - 4

The world has tried to add their ideas, thoughts and beliefs to God’s Word.
Colossians 2: 8

In fact, it’s not a new thing. They were already doing it when Jude wrote his letter.
Jude 1: 4

We are not told to get along with these people so we can have peace. Instead, we are told to contend with them. Those who teach false doctrine must be confronted. To do that, the Christian must understand the teachings of the Gospel. We must know what is taught in the New Testament. To do that, we must study it daily.
Acts 17: 11

There will always be a reason to contend for the faith. There will always be a reason to contend for what is right and acceptable in worship. There will always be a reason to contend for teachings that affect the lives of Christians and the eternal life we aspire to achieve. It seems that every few years some new religious lie sprouts wings. These must be fought against, if the faith is to be maintained.

Jude then tells us that God’s condemnation of false teachers is a righteous condemnation.
Jude 1: 5 - 7

It is a righteous action for Him to punish the ungodly.
II Thessalonians 1: 5 - 10

It is just as righteous for God to punish the ungodly as it is for Him to reward the faithful.
Romans 2: 5 - 8

It is righteous because those disobedient to God’s Will always try to mislead the faithful. Ungodly Israelites were punished in the wilderness.
I Corinthians 10: 5

Ungodly angels are kept in bonds until Judgment Day.
II Peter 2: 4

Sodom and Gomorrah were punished for their abominations.
II Peter 2: 6

All were righteous judgments. Just as those coming among Christians and leading the weak astray with false doctrine are promised a coming punishment.

God has given us a choice and told us what the outcome will be.
Romans 6: 23

If we know we are doing wrong and continue to do it, we have nothing to complain about when we are punished for it.
Lamentations 3: 39

Jude wrote his letter for all Christians in all times. Hopefully, we won’t ignore what he wrote.
I Corinthians 14: 37

He has plainly shown us what is required of us. We will either do it, and live. Or, we will disobey and burn. It’s really very simple. What do you choose?
