Longview, Lancaster and Forney are looking stronger in 2023.....

Fnzva8pXEAACm2b.jpeg

Longview SR RB Taylor Tatum
The 2023 version of Longview's roster will have the most division one players for the program since 2009. Among those players is the reigning district MVP Taylor Tatum, the #1 rated RB in Texas. The 6'0 205 pound beast has seen the endzone more than any Lobo player ever, and he hasn't even begun his SR campaign. He's currently sitting at 37 collegiate offers, which makes him the highest recruited Longview Lobo ever. If that's not enough, there's buzz about Tatum, whose also a track star, being a draft prospect on the baseball side of things.

Despite players like Jalen Hale (Alabama), JJ Rougley (Lamar), Kaden Brooks (UAM) and Ta'Darion Boone graduating, is it possible that Longview will be even better in 2023? It's certainly a healthy possibility. Longview returns 3 all state players, most of any team in all of 5A. There are also 11 returning who were all district in some capacity, most of any team in the district. Offense returns 7 starters headlined by RB Taylor Tatum (6'0 205) whose coming off 2,049 total yards to go along with a school record 36 TDs. FB/RB Alijah Johnson (5'9 200) gave the Lobos an additional 1,030 total yards and 12 TDs. Tatum-Johnson could be the best duo to walk the halls of Longview and will lead a deep backfield. D1 WR DK Reese (6'3 175) returns along with 1st team all district TE Jaymerson Darensbourg (6'2 200) and 3 OL: LG Jacoby Watts (6'0 250), LT Fernando Longoria (6'2 250) and C Tavion Morgan (5'11 280), who'll be a 3 year starter. The defense will be down right deadly. 6 starters (2 all state) returning on this side of the ball. The DL will be anchored by Billy Smith (6'1 235) and Xaryus Sheppard (6'1 210), both 3 year starters. Smith was 2nd team all state and between him and Sheppard (1st team all district), QBs were sacked nearly 30 times in 2022. The secondary will be one of the best in the state. It'll feature a quartet of 3 year starters and multiple D1 athletes in S Buddha Garrett (6'0 195), S Chase Smith (5'10 190), CB Jaiden Simmons (5'11 165) and S/CB Willie Nelson (5'10 170). Nelson was all state in 2022 and recently committed to Oklahoma State. One of the best players out there. Keep a look out for the '25 LB tandem of Brenden Reese (6'1 219) and Kason Brooks (5'10.5 195). This is a very rare and highly anticipated LB tandem even for Longview. Reese has already started accumulating D1 offers but Brooks may be the better of the two. Longview will also welcome the arrival of '25 transfer Jailynn Taylor (6'0 180). Longview's '24 and '25 classes are among some of the best in Texas and will compliment one another very well in 2023. Expect Longview to open the season #2 in the state behind Aledo.

11302136.jpg

Lancaster SR slot Ti'Erick Martin
Lancaster will have multiple division one guys running routes in 2023, none bigger than Ti'Erick Martin. Martin's near 1,100 yard performance in 2022 makes him the leading returning pass catcher in the district, one of the top returners in the state. There were not many players that had big success against Longview's defense last season, but Martin did to the tune of 14 catches for 155 yards. Martin won't win the get off the bus trophy at 5'7 165, but there aren't many more dangerous players in all of 5A than #0.

Longview probably won't be the only program in the district ranked in the top 5 statewide when Week 1 arrives. There are 5 all district players returning on this Lancaster Tiger team and spoiler alert, Lancaster is loaded once again. There is actually a lot to unravel here. First let's discuss two huge transfers for the Tigers so far this offseason, SR RB/LB Mar'Kel Porter (6'1 220) and JR LB Ke'Breion Winston (6'1 205). Both are FBS recruits who came from Duncanville and Cedar Hill respectively. Porter actually played snaps for both Duncanville and Lancaster last season. Porter gives Lancaster two FBS RB's in the backfield with fellow SR RB Kewan Lacy (6'0 190) returning in an offense with 7 starters back. Lancaster played two sophomore QBs last season in JaQuavius Pipkin (5'10 175) and Carter Jones (6'4 190). Pipkin saw more passing attempts than Carter so it'll be interesting to see if Lancaster continues with a 2 QB system, or if one beats out the other during spring. QB1 will have plenty of toys outwide including a trio of D1 WRs, Ti'Erick Martin (5'7 165), Kam Robinson (6'2 195) and Emmanuel Choice (6'4 180). Robinson put up 700 yards last season. RT Kam Echols (6'0 250), SR RG Levon Davis and SR LT Tobias Steppes (6'6 260) will anchor the offensive line. Meanwhile, transfer Winston will boost a defense that has a little more question marks compared to the offense. But big time talent Corian Gipson does return to his safety position. Gipson is one of the most sought after DBs in the country with 40 offers in hand to back it up. JR CB Messiah Boulieu (5'11 160) is one to watch in the secondary. He finished top 5 at NLA100 a few weeks back. SR LB Josh Brown (5'10 240) was 2nd team all district last season, that'll make for a good tandem with Winston. Lancaster's biggest question mark going into the season is the defensive line, which was gutted by graduation. DT Jakobe Williams (6'0 260) was co district defensive newcomer of the year last season as a freshman,  so that's one less question mark. All in all, you can expect more of the same typical athletic and talented Lancaster in 2023.

FiDhcMvWQAEGBtn.jpg

Forney SR DB Aaron Flowers
There's a ton of talent in 7-5A DI. Here's example #652, Forney DB Aaron Flowers. Flowers is ranked the #2 safety in Texas, #13 nationally. Flowers was 1st team all district for the Jackrabbits, finishing with 3rd most INT's in the district. There are a district high 9 returning starters on the Forney defense and there's really no telling how good the unit could be with Flowers headlining the defense.

One of the fastest surging programs in 5A D1 is Forney and that is partly because of their growth. Its no secret that Texas is growing, and DFW remains the most active new home market nationally. Forney is currently well over the 6A cutoff and they have another hefty sized freshmen class coming in this fall that has the enrollment forecased to top 2500. Another reason for the surge is HC Jeff Fleener who brought the Forney program from 0-9 to back to back 7-4 seasons. If Forney has a 3rd consecutive winning season in 2023, it'll be the first time in 20 years that its happened. A winning culture has been established and now, that culture has some talent to work with too. Forney has a ton returning from a team that whooped up on both Lufkin and McKinney North in big district games last season. 15 starters are back, 9 of them on defense. Lets start with the DL where 3 of 4 starters return. DE Tank Bennett (6'0 240), DT Luke Rodriguez (6'3 275) and DE Caden Sanders (6'0 190) are back to lead an experienced defensive front. There was a point in the season when Bennett was averaging a sack and a half, D1's are starting to knock on the door. Squatting over 600lbs, Rodriguez is the strongest on the team. 3 LBs also return in Kellen Wolverton, Landry Hopkins and Easton McMillan. Hopkins (5'11 210) was district defensive newcomer of the year as a freshman. 3 SRs are back in the secondary in CB Josh Gatlin (5'10 175), DB Seth Hyder and DB Aaron Flowers (6'0 190). Flowers is one of the best players in the nation. Speaking of that, the offense has 6 starters back led by one of the top 2026 backs in the nation Javian Osborne (5'10 180). QB Brent Paine (6'1 180) tied for most TD passes in the district last season, and he'll have a plethora of pass catchers returning to go along with 2 offensive linemen: SR RG Hugo Lopez (6'0 270) and SR C Mathew Diosdado (5'11 260). There may not be enough heat to catch Longview or Lancaster but they'll be better than the rest of the district. Don't be shocked to see Forney ranked inside the top 25-30 at the start of the year, they're only headed in one direction:  UP.

Lufkin and McKinney North both have healthy chances at being playoff teams, but which one will be better?

6351cfafd321b.image.jpg

Lufkin JR OLB Kaden Hooper
The big story for Lufkin going into next season will probably be RB Kedren Young. It's understandable, he definitely deserves the notoriety after his big year last season. 13 offers since January 17th will definitely raise some eyebrows too. At the same time though, several teams in the district have talent at the RB position, but not everyone has a solid 2025 class like the Panthers have. There are several guys in the group worth discussing but LB Kaden Hooper is certainly one of the faces of the class. The powerlifter was the 3rd leading tackler for the Panther defense in 2022 as a sophomore and looks to be making major strides in the offseason. A physical freak whose a nightmare off the edge and even in coverage on occasion. The kid just makes plays and is very dependable in the open field, he was Lufkin's 2nd leading solo tackler in 2022. If 6 win Lufkin turns into 8+ win Lufkin, a lot of it will be because of '25 players like Hooper.

Lufkin started 2022 on a 3-0 run which included an unexpected road win against A&M Consolidated, who was ranked #3 in the state at the time. You could imagine the buzz that created the very next week when #1 Longview made the trip to Abe. Unfortunately for the Panthers, the game was not competitive and to make matters worse, neither was the following week against Forney on the road. Even with all of that, the Pack still had a shot at the bidistrict round with a win against McKinney North. But that challenge also appeared to be too steep for the Pack. Bizarre season for Lufkin indeed when you go from a 3-0 start with a win against a top 5 ranked team in the state, to not making the playoffs. But could Lufkin be a playoff team in 2023? Fair question to ask when a player like SR RB Kedren Young is leading the charge. The 5'11 225 back put up a whopping 1,666 on the ground while also adding a slight 19 touchdowns in 2022. Young was named all state honorable mention following the performance, and that's not all. Recruiters from all over the nation have flocked to the Lufkin, TX just to get a piece of the '24 back. Lufkin will have some experience up front blocking for Young notably SR LG Jordan Nichols (6'2 300), SR RG Daniel Torres (5'11 245) and JR LT Geo Villegas (6'0 260). Graduation did effect the WR group a little, but players like SR Braydon Murphy and JR Kevondrick Taylor will return out wide. JR Krisean Preston (6'2 195) will also be another to watch. Lufkin hasn't had that spark out wide that you typically see in Lufkin since Jalynn Polk in the 2020 class. Between '25s Preston and Taylor, that will change for the Pack. Now for the fun part, who will be getting the ball to these wideouts? On the surface, the easy answer is SR QB TJ Hammond (6'0 220) who will be entering his 3rd year throwing varsity passes for Lufkin. But things get a little interesting when you add '25 QB/ATH Gavin Phillips (6'1 235) to the mix. Over on the defense, the Pack defensive line appears to be pretty strong with SR Brenden Baker (5'11 255) returning to his DT position. SR DE Cooper Conrad (6'2 210) had significant playing time. Speaking of significant, right in the middle of the Panther defensive line is a stud that appears to be one of the top 2025 interior DL in the nation, Zion Williams (6'4 300). Williams has accumulated numerous P5 offers recently. On the 2nd level, the teams 3rd leading tackler in '25 Kaden Hooper (6'0 205) returns on the edge. SR S Isaiah Menefee (6'2 185), the teams leading tackler last season, also returns in the secondary. Menefee is also starting to see his recruiting catch a spark following a 2nd team all district performance last season. Key pieces returning plus reinforcements from a strong 2025 group have people in Lufkin a little more optimistic about Lufkin's chances compared to previous seasons.

Lufkin will have work to do if they want to play post season football though. McKinney North is bringing back 13 starters from last seasons' team that pushed Port Arthur Memorial in bi-district, the offensive core being one of the more impressive returning cores in the district. It all starts with SR D1 RB Jayden Walker (5'10 180), whose returning to the McNorth backfield for the 3rd year. Walker was the districts leading rusher last season, putting up 2,022 rushing yards and 22 TDs for the Bulldogs. Walker was first team all district. Year 3 D1 QB Colin Hitchcock (6'5 210) also returns, and he'll have a pair of D1 wideouts to catch passes in JR WR Kam Powell (6'2 190) and SR ATH Taylor Offord (5'9 165). Powell was district co offensive newcomer of the year last season. As cherry on top, SR TE/H Nate Markeiwicz (6'5 240) is also back, another D1 prospect. The offensive line was impacted by graduation but Demond Donahue (6'3 250) was effective at RT as a sophomore last season. The Bulldog defense brings back 7 of those 13 starters. SR Edge Zion Carter (6'3 227) headlines that side of the ball, another player on the roster receiving some D1 attention. SR DL Justin Zdeb also returns up front. The 2nd level is the most experienced 2nd level in the district as SR LB Peyton Jester (5'10 190), SR LB Grayson Rogers (6'3 190) and SR LB Brandon Markeiwicz (6'1 200) all return. McKinney North's rushing defense last season was not as much of a problem as the pass defense was, but McNorth will gladly welcome 2 returning starters in the secondary in SR S Sean Kessner (5'10 175) and SR DB Keithon Davis (5'9 160). K Trevor Dutton (5'10 160) may also be the best returning K in the district. Moving the ball more than likely won't be a problem for McKinney North, but how well they can control the clock, establish depth and show some resistance defensively will determine how long McKinney North plays in 2023. Beyond that, McKinney ISD trends do not appear to be in North's favor for the future, the window may be closing and this could be North's last chance to make some noise. Good news is, the Bulldogs certainly have the SR class to do it.

HIZLKNREPJDOXDMFM5DWJI6XNA.jpg

McKinney North SR RB Jayden Walker
Walker showed flashes of how dangerous he could be as a sophomore back in 2021, but I dont think anyone saw what was on the horizon for 2022. Walker (5'10 180) led the district in rushing yardage last season with 2,107 yards and 22 TDs, which is pretty impressive when you consider that he shared a district with 7 other D1 backs. His dad, David Walker, was a great player back in the 90s, playing safety on the D1 level so it seems that the apple doesnt fall too far from the tree. McNorth is returning some solid offensive talent all around but make no mistake, Walker will be the key to how long the Bulldogs play in 2023.

So, whose favorite to get that 4th playoff slot? Lufkin will have the home field advantage over McKinney North this time around. Lufkin will also benefit from more help from subvarsity compared to McKinney North. And although McKinney North won that 53-51 barn burner last season, Lufkin did have a 17 point 3rd quarter lead in that game. On the flip side of things, McKinney North is returning a great offensive core that put 53 points on Lufkin last season. Lufkin has also failed to make post season the last two seasons, while McKinney North has done just enough to make it to the bi-district round. If Lufkin fails to make the playoffs again, it'll be the first time since '91-'93 that Lufkin failed to make the playoffs 3 consecutive seasons. Pressure is on.

New Era beginning at Tyler High....

thumbnail.jpg

Tyler High JR LB D'Canaan Sueing
New Tyler High HC Rashaun Woods may have to lean on the CUJO defense early on while the offensive side of the ball figure out some things. That may not necessarily be a bad thing either with MLB D'Canaan Sueing returning. At 5'11 185, Sueing put up 94 tackles in the regular season which led the district, as a sophomore! That was good enough to earn him 1st team all district. The rest of the district better get use to hearing the Sueing last name because his brother D'Crystian Sueing had 81 tackles of his own in 2022 as a sophomore.

After 11 seasons, The Ricklan Holmes era has come to an end in CUJO land. Word about the potential vacancy started to spread in November of last year, not even a week following the regular season. Finally 3 days before Christmas, it was made official. Coach Holmes and TISD had parted ways. Things weren't always cloudy though. Holmes averaged slightly over 10 wins a season during his first 5 years as HC at his alma mater. But averaged only 4 wins during his last 6, which is a big no no at a program that is the 14th winningest in Texas High School football history. In comes Coach Rashaun Woods from Oklahoma, an eloquent well spoken figure that has not only shown ability to turn lemons into lemonade, he has state championship pedigree as well. Like Coach Holmes, Woods is an Oklahoma State alum who was once a 1st round NFL draft pick. A member of the Oklahoma State hall of honor, Woods was named Oklahoma Coach of the Year in 2017 after winning a state title. So the resume is pretty impressive and if stability is a worry for CUJO nation, Woods has roots in Daingerfield. So, what will he have to work with in his first year at Tyler High? Not a bad bunch. 4 star ATH Derrick McFall (5'10.5 175) is bringing 23 D1 offers into this month, including Alabama. McFall is one of the most sought after ATHs in the country. RB is his best and most effective position but looks like he'll be trending toward WR again with Montrell Wade off to Boston College, and the return of SR RB Jamichael Cooper (5'9 185) who was honorable mention all district last season. Cooper also seeing some small buzz amongst recruiters. Several players saw significant time at WR last season, JR WR Terrell Crawford (5'8 160) being one of the main ones. The OL will have to be rebuilt with SR LG Michael Cooper being the lone returning full time starter up front but there are candidates. At QB, JR Jabralyn Williams (5'11 185) saw much of the snaps for CUJO in 2022. SR Deuce Martin (5'9 170) also saw time at both WR and CB for Tyler High. Speaking of defense, Julian Dews (6'4 230) and Jace Stanford (6'3 240) return to their DE positions up front. Stanford has an offer from Arkansas State and Dews is coming off a 2nd team all district performance. Behind them will be a brother duo in D'Canaan Sueing (5'11 185) and D'Crystian Sueing (5'11 180). Between the two, 175 tackles were accounted for. D'Canaan was 1st team all district in 2022. A strong SR class does not stop there, as SR LaDarius Franklin (5'11 180) also returns to the Tyler High defense, along with SR CB Zachaun Williams (6'1 175) whose one of the top CB's in Texas. Tyler High is the most interesting team in the district, which explains why the Lions had their own section in the previews. This year could either be disaster as is often the case in the inaugural year under new coaches, or Tyler could be better than we think especially with Coach Woods ability to turn programs around, as he showcased across the border. Key home games against Forney, Lufkin and McKinney North could help the Lions as well in 2023.

Changes are happening in Mesquite ISD, but are any of them benefitting West Mesquite and/or North Mesquite?

Screenshot_20230416_144524_Twitter.jpg

North Mesquite SR QB Luke Seder
If there is any glimpse of hope within the North Mesquite program, it would certainly have to be QB Luke Seder (6'0 190). Son to HC Tim Seder, Luke led the district last season in passing yardage. Some of that could've been due to North Mesquite playing from behind often, but some colleges have started to take notice in his skills so there is certainly something there. North Mesquite could find themselves having to play keep up in a lot of games this fall. Seder has proven that he can put up big numbers before and he'll without a doubt have to duplicate it this fall to maximize North Mesquite's chance at winning games.

North Mesquite and West Mesquite went a combined 5-15 in 2022. For reference, Lufkin won more games than both Mesquite ISD schools combined and did not make the playoffs. It's no secret that Mesquite ISD has struggled. Going into last season, there was actually some optimism out there that North would maybe have a chance at post season. The drop in classification mixed with numerous division 1 prospects on the roster raised some eyebrows, but things did not come to fruition. So, what happened?

There were probably several factors, but one factor could be the current trends and changes in the city of Mesquite and Mesquite ISD. To start, how did North Mesquite go from the largest Mesquite ISD school to nearly the smallest, which caused them to drop anyway? Two things: the opening of Vanguard HS, a non traditional HS with 2,000 capacity and attendance zone changes....that now has Mesquite Horn as the largest high school in Mesquite ISD. Also, the city of Mesquite is going through another housing boom that will add nearly 4 billion to the tax base. But Mesquite Horn is set to benefit from majority of it along with Forney ISD. North has always dealt with depth issues even when the school was the largest in the school district. You can only imagine the football numbers now that they've loss so many kids, and there doesn't look like much growth is on the horizon unless Mesquite ISD rezones to help with explosion growth that is about to happen at Horn, but it doesn't sound like that is likely and if it does....the district would probably adjust Poteet, West Mesquite and Mesquite High zones to accommodate growth before adjusting North's.

In terms of 2023, North returns 6 starters....4 on offense, 2 on defense. Graduation gutted the Stallions pretty good. QB1 does return in Luke Seder (6'0 190), who put up 1,943 passing yards last season, district leader in that department during the the regular season. SR WR Jaqualyn Carraway (6'0 155) finished 3rd in receiving on the team last season and looks to be the go to guy in 2023. JR's Ka'majay Else and Christian Brooks saw significant PT out wide. SR LT Dontavius Evans is the lone returning starter up front. Defense will have a lot of question marks to answer this offseason. Big time D1 SS/LB Fred Dotie has transferred to Kennedale HS, leaving only 2 starters returning defensively for the Stallions in SR DT Joseph Simpson and JR LB Ka'majay Else, who was the districts 3rd leading tackler last season. Keep a a look out for rising 2025 edge Leander Parish (6'2 215). The Stallions will look to fill other holes from subvarsity teams that went a combined 1-18 in 2022.

Screenshot_20230416_145551_Chrome.jpg

West Mesquite SR ATH Kasen McCoy
Kasen McCoy has spent his time at a number of positions throughout his high school career, but maybe his most dangerous role was as a volume catcher outwide for West Mesquite last season. McCoy (5'8 170) was quietly one of the most explosive players in the district, utilizing his speed and quickness to burn secondaries to the tune of nearly 900 yards last season. It's really impressive when you consider that McCoy shared targets with Javion Jackson who had multiple DI offers. West Mesquite goes as McCoy goes in 2023.

Things have not been a lot better at West Mesquite as of late, but they are in a better situation than North. Some of that 4 billion tax base growth will happen in West Mesquite's zone, and they have avoided declining enrollment during this 'new era' of Mesquite ISD. Both subvarsity teams went 5-3 last season for a combined 10-6. Ultimately, I believe that West is victim to simply being in a tough district more than anything. The Wranglers will look to right the ship in 2023 with 9 starters back. There are question marks at QB and RB, but the offensive line will return 4 out of 5:  Rodolfo Escobedo, Sam Aguilar, Chris Figueroa and Nathan Guerra all of which are returning for their SR seasons. 5'8 170 Kasen McCoy is a big time player and great athlete that could line up at both RB and WR offensively, CB defensively. Over on the defense, SR's Victor Chatman (5'10 240) and Christian Watts (6'1 220) are returning. Kamry Simpson returns at LB, while Demetris Ballard (6'1 185) started in the secondary as a sophomore last season. He could be involved at QB for the Wranglers this fall and as mentioned before, McCoy could see time at CB.

The Mesquite schools have work to do if they want to see post season play.

I have a nice 4 piece preview coming up of the district that'll further explain the 2023 projected rankings. Stay tuned!

Everything is finished, I just wanted to go ahead and get the thread going. There's a ton of information to dive into (a ton to talk about with Lancaster alone), that's why I chopped it up into 4 pieces.

Longview, Lancaster and Forney preview should be up in the AM.

I believe I have the most confidence of this Tyler team than I have had since 2018 I really like where the culture of is changing with the new staff. I’m not saying we will be top 2 but I think this new staff can get us in and that’s all you can ask for!

I like the Tyler hire.

But it's going to be tough in year one. It may take a little time to dig Tyler up from the hole they were placed in but beyond that.....

The rosters at Longview, Lancaster, Forney, McNorth and Lufkin are simply better right now.

Man does Longview ever struggle? District champion in every level lol. Outstanding program year in year out.

"Struggling" in Longview is defined as not being state-ranked and only going 1-2 rounds deep.

There is alot of starters returning for JT. I think talent is there. But you never know how things go with a new coach.

Question: if Longview's first game is today, what's their two-deep?

Oof. We'd need spring to iron out a lot of the wrinkles lol but I could give an estimate with my own little twist.

QB contestants

SR Andrew Tutt (5'11 175)

JR Jailynn Taylor (6'0 180) *transfer, also in the mix at other positions

JR Maverick Rowe (5'8.5 160)

How many of longviews players are multiple sport kids? Not counting track.

Quite a bit but that answer would've been 'alot' with track added.

Longview, Lancaster and Forney previews are up.

Great springish previews.

I expect Forney to take a big step this year, but still Longview/Lancaster should be the class of the district.

Lufkin/Tyler will be interesting to watch for sure. Only team I really see taking a step back this year is McKinney North (ahead of their likely move to 6A next year at that).

Longview varsity and JV boys won the Marshall relays recently.

4x1 features '24 DB Willie Nelson (1st leg), '25 RB Boosie Washington (3rd leg) and '24 RB Taylor Tatum (4th leg)

Saw where Lancaster is already dropping 41.7s…… in February

That was very much a rough draft though.

Especially on the DL. That'll be one of the biggest areas to watch in the spring. I sort of think they may move Billy Smith back to DE and let youth man the interior.
