Please explain how the minimum wage helped millions out of poverty.  How does raising a wage from $2 to $4 lift one out of poverty?

The minimum wage does not directly lift anyone out of poverty...especially the way the mw has been devalued over the years...but it does set a floor for wages. When adjusted for inflation the fed mw from 1968 would be over $13 an hour today. In Henderson, Tx a couple working 40 hours per week and making $13 an hour each could at least keep a roof over their head and buy enough to eat...they certainly can not do those things making $7.25 an hour. The other choice is to have the taxpayers subsidize the working poor through food stamps, Medicaid, subsidized housing etc. Take your pick.

I was kidding. I figured it would. 🙂

Or, in Morse:

I don't even think it's a censored word....

No it did not.....World War brought about economic recovery and renewed prosperity, not the socialist measures of the Roosevelt administration........

WWII certainly ended unemployment. Seeing as FDR had at least 400 electoral college votes in each of his elections I guess someone thought his policies were effective.

The minimum wage was set so that companies would NOT take advantage of students and those working in school while they earned the diploma or degree, it was NEVER intended to be the only living a person could make. But with the shipment of jobs overseas, the unions over gouging the owners, we are now in a state of economy that adults have to work for the minimum.....Except those of us in teaching, who make less than $2 an hour......

Who said all that???? Slow your roll, maybe and unbunch 'em. I am pointing out the truth that with government assistance more people have gotten medical care, fewer people have gone hungry, and overall poverty has been dealt with much more forcefully with government intervention and support.

Government "assistance" has done far more long term harm than good ... it creates weak, government dependent surfs instead of strong self sufficient citizens ....

Lol I don’t always agree with him but this is spot on. Handouts typically do that. Welfare was meant as temporary assistance not a paycheck.

And the problem with our system of "welfare" is that there is NO way to get off of it once you start taking it. It becomes a crutch, a vice, whatever you want to call it.....it is much easier to keep getting money from the government than to get out and work all day long to bring home a paycheck.

If our governmental systems were used to help when needed, and not a crutch, I could support some of them......but they are for politicians to continue to get more votes, that is why "welfare" never ends. The same with the "government ponzi scheme" that is going broke, which will cause taxes to rise again, so that we can help those poor elderly people who worked, but didn't save over their lifetimes......because that 6.2% from both you and your employer doesn't go far enough when you get more than what you pay into the system....

While I am not a fan of the government ponzi scheme, I do have to wonder if this will break a "tax increase" promise by this president NOT to raise taxes on people making under $400,000? I understand that SS taxes stop at a certain point, and because this PONZI Scheme isn't working and to keep the elderly voting for them, they have to do something to keep the handouts going.....So why not raise taxes on people, what's another 6.2% on companies and those working? We should rid ourselves of this PONZI scheme and privatize all the money that comes in, and when you retire, what you have is what you get. If you die early, the money is left to your family members to increase their future, instead of putting the money back into the "pot" for everyone.

There are plenty jobs out there that pay a lot more than minimum wage. Of course you have to pass a drug test, actually come to work everyday,  be presentable and willing to work ... minimum wage jobs are primarily for younger, part time entry level people ... and, you know, the kind that don't meet the qualifications I laid out earlier ....

As an example, my son who works in HR at Priefert in Mt Pleasant tells me they typically have from 50 to 75 positions open they are trying to hire for ... good paying jobs from welders to fork lift operators, high tech machinery jobs  etc.  .... why do they have so many openings?  Because people can't pass the drug test, won't come to work regularly, would rather depend on welfare and a dozen other personal disqualifying reasons ....

We don't have a minimum wage problem, we have a lazy, drug addicted, uncommitted workforce problem ....

I worked in food service for a total of about four and a half years. During part of that time, I was able to get promoted to an assistant manager role. Basically, I learned every station at that restaurant, I came to work on time, worked my shifts, worked to get along with my co workers (a few of which had poor attitudes), and rarely called out.

Heck, as an assistant I even ran an entire fast food restaurant by myself one day for nearly 3 hours because my two opening people didn't show up. The mid-shift manager (who was also the store manager) came in around 8:30, and her first two questions to me were "Where is everyone?" followed by "Why didn't you call me?"

Still waiting for people to figure out that wages aren't the problem.

The idiocracy in California gets even worse......giving people money because they have been discriminated against.....Hasn't everyone?

What worries me more is the wanting to spread this across the country......this is nothing more than communism, where you are taking from one group and giving to another....wealth redistribution....and they wonder why people are leaving that god awful state.

https://www.pbs.org/newshour/nation/california-task-force-approves-proposal-for-state-reparations-to-black-residents

Some estimates from economists have projected that the state could owe upwards of $800 billion, or more than 2.5 times its annual budget, in reparations to Black people.

“I am confident that through our collective efforts, we can make a significant drive in advancing reparations in our great state of California and ultimately the country,” Jenkins said.

Even the kids know the situation in becoming a teacher.

Where are these loons going to get that kind of money to pay this foolishness? The state can't pay their bills as it is .... Taxpayers not on the dole are going to be leaving Kalifornia in droves if they go through with this nonsense  ....
