From Baseball Digest on Facebook:

At the start of today’s action, the Texas Rangers stand atop the American League West with a 35-20 record. The team’s resurgence has been accomplished largely through a series of trades and free-agent signings, most notably the additions of players like Marcus Semien, Corey Seager, Jacob deGrom, Nathaniel Lowe, Nathan Eovaldi, Jon Gray and Adolis Garcia. Couple that with the hiring of three-time World Series champion Bruce Bochy, whom the Rangers introduced as manager in October of 2022, and you have a team vying for a division title.

The second iteration of the Washington Senators relocated to Arlington, TX, in 1972, and the Rangers were first managed by Hall of Famer Ted Williams. After two seasons of flux and 100-plus losses, the team entrusted Billy Martin to right the ship. Martin promptly led the Rangers to their first winning season in 1974, finishing second in the AL West with an 84-76 record.

One of the franchise’s first impact players was outfielder Jeff Burroughs. In 1974, he batted .301, belted 25 home runs, and drove in a league-leading 118 runs. He was hitting at a .332 clip until sustaining a thumb injury on 10-cent beer night in Cleveland on June 4. Despite the setback, he was voted the AL’s starting left fielder for the All-Star Game at Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh.

Unfortunately, the Rangers had a buzzsaw to contend with in the same division—Charlie Finley’s Oakland A’s—who posted a 90-72 record to capture the division crown, and went on to win their third consecutive World Series title.

Several Rangers collected awards in 1974, however. Fergie Jenkins posted 25 wins against 12 losses and a 2.82 ERA and earned AL Comeback Player of the Year. Despite Alvin Dark’s success with the A’s, Martin was named AL Manager of the Year. Mike Hargrove—who would later go on to manage the Indians, Orioles, and Mariners—took AL Rookie of the Year honors. And Burroughs beat out Oakland’s Joe Rudi, Sal Bando, and Reggie Jackson for the AL MVP Award.

The Rangers made their first postseason appearance in 1996 and reached the World Series in back-to-back seasons in 2010 and ’11.

Now the franchise is hoping for its first playoff berth since 2016.

Jeff Burroughs is back to his roots living in Long Beach now at age 72.  After retirement from baseball, he managed and led his Long Beach Little League entry into the Little League World Series to back to back titles for the USA....with his two sons on the team and leading the way.  Not too many people are aware of this......but it's the ONLY time it has happened for the USA in history.

Now back to this season's Rangers.......it's "Hello Win Column" again as they won in walk-off fashion last night in the bottom of the 9th 3-2 over St. Louis.  I believe they are now 10 wins in the last 13 games.....and playing a week-long homestand.  Maybe it was 4-3......I watched the game on TV, but maybe that was the final.

The Rangers are back at Globe Life Park in Arlington tonight battling those St. Louis Cardinals in Game 2 in their week-long homestand this week. They were leading 6-2, but gave up 2 solo homers in the top of the 6th, and now the score it 6-4. Those Cardinals would love to come from behind tonight to even the series, but the Rangers are on the hottest streak of their season so far.
