But I have a thing for the 34 defense when ran properly and no one runs it like Joseph. It's no accident that his son is now getting PNG to the finals....apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Gary Joseph is a genius. And yes, he's doing it at the highest level. But most notably, in a multi HS school district. Folks have no idea the level of difficulty that intels. 1

Grainraiser
"But most notably, in a multi HS school district. Folks have no idea the level of difficulty that intels." I really don't think people know how difficult it is to be a multi-championship team from a multi HS district. They are the only ones who can pull it off.

Do we count SOC and Northshore on this list....along with Denton Ryan and Denton Guyer? I do agree its tougher to pull it off in a Multi HS school district..but somehow these elite programs have manage to stay elite.

I think very highly of Jon Kay... my #2 coach behind Gary Joseph, in part because of the multi HS school district thing....although Galena Park ISD definitely doesn't zone to accommodate district growth. I don't know if there's a better coach in TX at adjustments, especially on the fly. Talk about a coach that adjusts to the athlete, Kay does it probably better than anyone. He lost his all world QB (Bailey) earlier in the year....still almost won it all because he changed the entire offense to accommodate QB2. And he's a defensive guy! Coach Todd is great at SOC. Guyers attendance zone is talent rich, namely the Lantana area. I'm still surprised to see Ryan on top still...I thought Braswell would get to them but hasn't, yet anyway.

All those are undeniable great coaches but Coach Surratt is heads above the best coach in Texas at the high school level. Makes adjustments immediately anytime during a game as does Preston on defense. 5 A DI and especially 6 A ball have 4 and 5 deep at every position, heck next man up. DI athletes all over the place. I can only imagine what Surratt could do with that kind of talent in his program. He is a master at getting the very best out of players. Every little kid in Carthage can’t wait to be a Dawg. Aledo is a program that I think of that mirrors the Dawgs only with a lot more talented athletes. Katy is one of my favorite 6 A teams and I like watching them play. Hard and physical players. 5A ball, I am a Longview Lobo fan, they have athletes out the wasoo. If they had a QB like Aledo had this year, they could have run through 5A. Just my opinion but that Aledo QB should be player of the year. 10.4 speed and very accurate passer.

No. I know you’re standing for SS, but you’re way off base on that. Edited January 3 by HearEmaGrowlin

ToddG
Aledo will March, unimpeded, to the 5A D1 championship. Sorry Longview, the lobo’s best chance to beat the Bearcats just passed, worry about Lancaster. Oh, btw, Mike Johnston was the head coach for a lot of Katy’s success..he built that program, and handed the reigns to his DC Joseph when he retired. Longview’s history is rich, and deserves great respect, despite the lack of a lot of championships..next season they will have to fight off Lancaster, possibly 2 meetings, and Timberview will be there as well..and after that, be staring an Aledo team on a roll, right in the face. It’s never easy, not even for teams like Aledo, Katy etc. gonna be a long 8 months to find all this out!!
