1989txhsfbfan
I think picking the best team in the Surratt era for Carthage is easy. You either go with 2017,2020 or 2022 unbeaten speaks for its self. But the Real Debate is which is the Best team from this dynasty that didn't win the title. You could go with 2012 which should have beaten El Campo if not for a terrible fumble or 2018 which went undefeated until the Slot T of Liberty Hill stopped them. Which team do y'all think it is? I have to go with 2012. Loss 2018 bothers me worse than 2012. Three dropped passes with no defender in five yards of the receivers. Three for sure touchdowns. BevBrownJr
Although the 2012 & 2018 teams come to mind first as the answer to the question posed in the thread title, two other teams deserve consideration even though they didn’t get to the state semifinals. The 2011 team was going for a 4-peat and fell to eventual state runner-up Argyle by a single point in 2 overtimes in the regional semifinals. This was the first of the three years in which Blake Bogenschutz was the starting CHS QB. He is the only sophomore to start at QB under Coach Surratt…but that statement probably won’t be true much longer. Coach Surratt’s first CHS team in 2007 had a lot of talent. Although they lost by 27 to eventual state champion Liberty Hill in the second round, that was arguably the toughest playoff game LH had in successfully defending their 2006 state championship. (LH won the 2007 state championship game against Gilmer by 25.) If this group had played under Coach Surratt for more than one season, it would have been very interesting to see what they would have done.

I believe the D line and linebackers were as good as it gets in 4A. Just my opinion They held opponents to minus yards at the half. That is unheard of in today football. 22 dominated every game but one. 2017 trailed Gilmer and LaVega played 17 close. Again just my opinion. I have watched every Dawg championship game many times. 17, 20, and 22 were dominant but the 22 group won every game by halftime but one.

Who was gonna cover Bowens, Ingram and Colbert or stop Ingram catching or running out of the backfield? Do you not remember Gates and Brown being Dogs on that defense or Colbert begging you throw in his direction? All 3 Sr LBs with over 125 tackles….Look at how that defense mauled Kennedale a team that featured 2 2,000 yd backs and ran an offense similar to the Glen Rose offense that the ‘22 version struggled to stop. I’m a Bulldawg through and through so I appreciate the success of both teams and cheered until I was hoarse for both but I still give the edge to the ‘17 team
