Best teams to fall short of a state title?

Since the season is rapidly approaching, and the high school football buzz is getting around I got a topic for y’all. We all talk about our schools best teams, winning state titles, etc. BUT Whose y’all’s schools best team that fell short of the state championship?

a lot of y’all will disagree with me on this but speaking for my CC dogs I think the 2013 team was the best CC team that didint bring home the title. A truly once in a generation backfield with Mitchell and Johnson, and a monstrous duo at fullback that rushed for I don’t even know how many thousands of yards that season and consistently hung 50-60 points on teams with the vicious wing T attack… fell short to Waskom in the 4th round 24-22 on a botched 2 point conversion and plenty of horrible officiating to the benefit of the wildcats (it happened I was there that night in Carthage in the snowstorm). I believe that team goes on to beat Refugio the next week and give Cisco a run for their money in the state game. Anyways what you guys got?

My 88 Daingerfield team lost to this little 2A team that had moved up to 3A named Southlake Carroll.  Coach Alexander told us we were his only team that could have played with the legendary 83 team.  I took that as the greatest compliment.

As far as small school ball goes Crockett in 2015 was absolutely loaded. Case Robinson at QB along with lucky daniels and Aj Phillips at wideout and a host of other athletes. Probably the best Crockett team ever assembled in recent years. Probably could’ve beaten anybody but Franklin that season. And Newton but they had a path to get to state and avoid them in the playoffs…

GJ Kinne's Gilmer team that got upset by L-E in bi-district

I wasn't really "shocked" that Gilmer lost that game.  They were overrated simply because they were very porous defensively.  I told a friend after the Daingerfield game that year (second game of the season, Gilmer won 62-42) that if anybody could hold Gilmer under 40 points we would likely lose.  Sure enough...  I'm not taking anything away from L-E that year because they were loaded as well.  It was just that our defense never gelled.  I would go out on a limb and say that if Gilmer would've focused a little more on the defensive side of the ball all those years, we would have more state titles than we already do.  Just my opinion.

I didnt see them but I bet the 1984 Daingerfield team is up there

I think they were a little overconfident going into the title game that year, JMO.  I was telling my brother while listening to that game on the radio, that if Daingerfield won it, they would lose in the title game, but if Gladewater won it, they would win state.  We will never know about the latter, but that was, and still is, my opinion.

Waskom 2020 and 21 was pretty solid.

Franklin 2015 2020

Idalou 2015

East Bernard 2015

Sonora 2014

Wall 2013

were all pretty solid as well

I forget about East Bernard in 15 that was a good one. They also had a good team in 13. That was a good year for 2a-1 ball lots of good teams and football was played that season

For Cooper

The 1989 12-0 Bam Morris led team that was dismantled by Rodney Thomas & Groveton @ Tyler Rose in 3rd rd

1996 Dawgs had size & speed but lost a nail biter against Grand Saline in the 2nd rd. Grand Saline lost in the next round to Groveton in a pretty close game… Groveton went on to play Iraan for state. That 96 team was probably Coach Joey Florence’s best Cooper team.

2000 Dawgs went 10-3 & lost to Celina in rd 3. Celina was in the middle of their big streak. Cooper was up 14-13 at half but Celina pulled away in the second half to win 41-14. The Dawgs were one of the few teams to even maybe put a little doubt in Celina during their run.

2004 Dawgs ran into eventual state champ Crawford in the 3rd round

2013 Dawgs that went 13-1 & lost in a ridiculous upset to Leonard. Would've like to have seen undefeated Cooper & Cisco in that semi-final game. Nobody was beating that 2013 Cisco team though.

2022 Dawgs that went 13-1 & bowed out to Timpson in the quarter-finals.
