GAME PREVIEW & SERIES REVIEW:
The 84th edition of Longview/Lufkin comes to the 2023 as the district opener for both squads. Two squads that are looking to push their seasons even further than they did last season. Last year, Longview of course fell in the State Semi-Finals. Lufkin, fresh off their first season of no playoffs in over 20 years, had a chance if results fell their way going into the final week of the year coupled with a win over state ranked Lancaster. However, the Tigers were able to claw a win out and prevent the Pack from advancing for the second straight season. Last year, Longview saw it's biggest margin of victory in the series history with a 56-7 win at Abe Martin Stadium. By far the most points Longview has ever scored against Lufkin in Lufkin. This year, a couple different paths have seen the two teams come into Lobo Stadium sitting at 3-0 and 2-1. Longview, despite grabbing a late lead against state ranked McKinney, saw the Lions reverse the night once more and pull out a two-point win with a last second field goal. The Lobos proceeded to follow up with an absolutely dominating victory over Marshall before seeing their game against Tyler Legacy ended at halftime due to storms despite a 28-7 Lobo lead. Lufkin on the other hand was marginally tested in their first two outings against Tyler Legacy and Nacogdoches, before requiring a come from behind victory in the final quarter against A&M Consolidated. The two teams head into Lobo Stadium looking to start district off right, with Longview's John King sitting at a near perfect 17-2 in district openers since taking over the Lobos in 2004. Longview has only lost in 2012 and 2017 (Mesquite, Mesquite Horn) in district opener under King. Lufkin will try to upset the #2 state ranked Lobos by not only trying to win their first game at Lobo Stadium since 2003, a streak that stretches eight different contests, but also record their first win over the Lobos in general since 2016. The Lobos have won six in a row over their rivals to the south, including two playoff victories. Lufkin's last visit to Lobo came in the COVID-2020 season, where the Lobos knocked off Lufkin 41-5 in bi-district play. The six-game winning streak for the Lobos over Lufkin is tied for the longest Lobo winning streak in series history, tying the 1980-1985 six-game streak. Overall, Longview has jumped out to a 12-2 record against Lufkin in their last 14 meetings. Longview is currently on a 15-game home winning streak, and is 36-1 in it's last 37 contests at Lobo.

ON THIS DATE IN LOBO HISTORY: September 15th
In 1939, Charles Sapp and Bobby Wilkinson each scored two touchdowns a piece as the Lobos held Carter-Riverside to a single rushing yard all night in a 31-6 victory over the Eagles.
In 1944, Art Rowland rushed for four touchdowns behind a stifling Lobo defense that held Nacogdoches to just 68 total yards in a 43-0 beat down of the Dragons at Lobo Stadium.
In 1950, Jimmy Burnett hauled in two second half passes to rally Port Neches Groves to a. 13-13 tie with Longview. Sonny Jones and Dick Nash registered the scores for the Lobos, with Nash bringing in a 67-yard punt return for a score.
In 1961, Don Petty rushed in from a yard out in the first quarter before Thomas Jefferson reeled off three consecutive scores in a 21-6 Patriot victory at Cobb Stadium in Dallas. Three Lobo turnovers sealed the fate for Longview.
In 1967, Steve Judy rushed from 14 yards out while Rodney Hill scored on a rush and a receiving play in a 27-7 Longview in over Arlington at Lobo Stadium.
In 1972, with just 8 yards passing combined, Mike Mock’s 32-yard second quarter field goal brought the game home for the Lobos as Longview knocked off La Marque, 3-0, at Etheredge Stadium.
In 1978, Sam Lanier rushed for two scores, Larry Smith and Victory McGee added two more in a 28-6 Lobo win over Fort Worth Paschal. Longview’s defense held the Panthers to just 56 yards on the night.
In 1989, Earnest Hunter tallied three rushing scores in a 34-8 Longview victory over Fort Worth Trimble Tech. The Lobos tallied 365 total yards on the night.
In 2000, Willie Andrews hauled in a 97 yard Hail Mary as time expired to lift Longview to a 27-24 victory over Lake Highlands at Lobo Stadium. Artillious Allison tallied three scores in the win, after surrendering 328 yards rush to the Wildcats.
In 2006, six different Lobos registered points for the Lobos on the night in a 28-point first quarter for the Lobos as Longview demolished Monroe Ouachita, 38-7, at Lobo Stadium.
In 2017, South Oak Cliff struck first before Longview tallied 38 unanswered in a 38-7 Lobo win over the Golden Bears at Lobo Stadium. Jaylin Brown’s 63-yard reception was the highlight of a night that saw the Lobos hang up 529 yards on the night.

I am outsider of course but I suspect this is by far Longview  and Lufkin favorite rivalry. Lufkin used so it seemed to have Longview number. This is also one of my top 5 favorite games (2004 at Sfa) was the closest game that matched a college attendance and atmosphere.  Also good seeing Lufkin back to winning again. As far as this game , it is difficult to go against the Lobos.

We know what Longview will bring to the table. They are the constant in this rival for the last several years. The variable will be Lufkin, have they closed the gap enough to make the game competitive?  Or will Longview cruised to another easy win.

Lufkin has some dawgs on offense and defense. Kedren Young will lead the offense and has some guys around him that can bring it. Especially in the WR group and with running mate Phillips. The big question is if the offensive line can hold up. 

Defense is lead by Zion Williams. He is the prototype defensive tackle. He has size, strength and speed. Zion is a violent player..I honestly worry about opponents players when he gets his hands on them. You don't get offers from Bama, Georgia and LSU being soft on the line. It's kinda funny, because he one of the nicest kids off the field. 

I think this one will come down to which team can oppose there will on the other. I believe Longview is better at what they do, than Lufkin is at what they do. So they have to be the favorite. But Lufkin has some guys that can play and it is a rival game. So maybe they come out with something to prove and make this a classic throw back game between the two, similar to the ones in 2017 and 2018.

Longview will decide the outcome. 

We play smart, don't turnover the ball, don't jump offside, etc. we win by two scores. 

But if we fart around lackadaisical and make stupid decisions, Lufkin will make us pay. 

This ain't Marshall or Tyler-Lee. LP is starving for some payback. They want this dub.

Looking forward to the slate of district games. Reminds of the old district matchups. You get the chance to see some of the best players around face off. Many of them will be playing on TV at the next level on Saturdays. And a few may get a chance to play on Sundays.

TBH.. I’ll be shocked is this game is close.  I think Longview wins big.

Lobo defense is stellar.  Running game is stellar and the passing game is sufficient and only getting better.

I see Longview pulling away late personally. I do think the Lobos are still a much better team. We'll see how Tutt handles the LP defense, and such. But long as the penalties don't return, we should definitely be winning.
