Shelbyville vs Joaquin

Joaquin has problems scoring  when they get inside the 20.  Been happening  all season, was the worst tonight.

Elysian Fields had the same problem against Shelbyville. They stayed in the red zone but didn't score a single time.

Shelbyville is not even remotely good defensively but they have managed to make redzone stops the past two weeks. They must be doing something right?

Defense is definitely not the Dragons’ strength. The Rams did themselves no favors with pre-snap penalties that turned 3rd and 2 into 3rd and 7. You’re only going to overcome so many of those, and that’s been our Achilles all year, at least offensively. Credit the Dragons for capitalizing on those opportunities to get stops. When you run an offense like ours, you have to stay on schedule to be successful, and between penalties and negative plays, it just isn’t happening. Defensively, we’re kind of a mess and Shelbyville exposed it big time. They play pitch and catch football extremely well. QB is very adept at keeping his eyes downfield and is not afraid to be creative in how he gets the football to his receivers. I don’t know what his numbers were, but I think he had 4-5 incompletions all night. Congrats and good luck the rest of the season.

At some point everybody besides about the four or five guys on the team giving all they have is gonna have to decide they want to play football. Because this ain't it chief.

Yeah when ya actually witness a contest such as this tonight, it makes ya scratch your head and question all kinda of stuff…..🤷🏼‍♂️ Rams certainly still searching for an identity on both sides of the ball

Be up that way in a couple of weeks to watch The Dragons play. Bought me some land in Shelbyville and hope to move up there in the next few years. Coming back home. Both sides of my family are from Shelbyville. A few generations ago though, some still live there.

Joaquin lost a lot to graduation! Two guys even went on to play college ball, and there are  a lot of young players on the team as well.

Also, y'all are a victim to what is going on everywhere which is the small towns dying out.

I've (by chance) watched several local junior high teams this year, and it's bad!

I mostly see a bunch of smallish, non aggressive kids that don't know how to play football. These same kids are inside playing video games or horsing around on Tiktok.

Even in the financially disadvantaged communities that used to be alive with street basketball, sandlot baseball, or backyard football is no more. I've been watching this phenomenon progress for about 15 years or so.

On top of that most of the really good athletic kids are transferring to bigger schools, or places where they have an opportunity to play on a good team.

I can't blame those families at all! I believe in loyalty, but why would a family with a good football player waste away in a place where they have no chance for recognition?

Baseball and basketball are a little different because of select ball and AAU, but even those organizations are getting watered down with politics and privleage.

Deep in my heart I hope I'm wrong about all of this, but it's not looking good. In my opinion times aren't changing anymore. They have changed.

Good luck to the Rams as well. I still think 3rd and 4th place is up for grabs. I predict it will get very interesting.

First in bold. That is a coaching issue.

Second in Bold you are right on.

Overall great posts.

My Team had one of the worst defense in our history. We hired a new staff with one of the best DCs ever at our school. We went from the worst defense who could not tackle and were not aggressive to playing for the State Championship in one single season. The new defense never misses a tackle, is always in the right place, and are very ferocious when it comes to tackles. Last night we defeated the @2 ranked team in 5A DII with a shutout of their high powered offense. I offer this to you to say there is hope. It can happen. I love Shelbyville. I live 3 hours away. Shelbyville and Joaquin has both had my family members play in those school. Infact I have family members playing on Joaquin this season. I hope to move to Shelbyville were my grandfathers family is from, and my grandmothers family is from. I have already purchased my land there, just waiting on electricity to start the building process to move up there and complete the circle of life going back to my ancestral home. My grandfather was born in Choice and my Grandmother in Possum Trot(SP)? Good luck to both schools they are both near and dear to my heart. I go to at least one Shelbyville game each season.

so it is the players then?

Players are young for the most part. We were very senior heavy last year and it showed. A physically mature offensive line was able to impose their will on a lot of opponents and some 3 year starters in the backfield took full advantage of it. This team has four seniors on it, and a lot of the juniors that are starting are doing so for the first time. On top of that, every opponent on the schedule is a better football team than they were a year ago. It’s just football.

Garrison is pretty young too, several freshmen and sophomores playing significant time especially at the skilled positions ....

No they are not….. young guys getting playing time in blowouts doesn’t count as meaningful playing time. Dawg studs are mostly seniors sprinkled in with some juniors as well. And any team that makes a deep run will be senior/junior led….. as it should be. Those aged kids are just naturally more mature and experienced.

Actually, a few are starters .... we have an 8th grader that plays RB / DB that's as good as anyone on the varsity offensive or defensive backfield ......
