Dropkick
Shelbyville Top 5 Quarterbacks As good as my old mind can remember. Calvin Cannon 1960 Was all state at quarterback and linebacker. Played linebacker in college Lester Belrose 1973 One of the best all around athletics to ever play. Was All American Punter and Place Kicker in college Rusty Jones 1978 Skinny kid could really run the triple option. If I had one game to win I'd probably choose him. Robert "Bubba" Polley 1982 Was the perfect point guard for the triple option D. J. Barnes 2023 Current quarterback will probably break all the records before he is finished
metalhead10
Lot of great QB's mentioned in this thread. I'll give my list of QB's I have actually seen play live at some point. Here's some of the best I've seen: 1. Gilmer --- Stump Godfrey --- He is Gilmer's #1 QB. He took us to two State Championship Games winning one in 2009 with a 16-0 record. He probably still has a lot of the school records. We have had a lot of good QB's since 2000: Manny Johnson was an all state WR as a junior and gets moved to QB his senior year and takes the Buckeyes to an undefeated State Championship in 2004 and went on to play at OU and even played some regular seasons with the Dallas Cowboys; McClane Carter put up crazy stats for the 2014 State Championship team and he sat out 23 Quarters that year (almost 6 full games) due to all the blowouts that year; Poppy Brown was an accurate passer and was money when we needed 2 yards on 4th down, he was going to get it 99% of the time; Tanner Barr was darn solid through the air and could tuck it and run also and unexpectedly took us to the State Championship game in 2012, where we ran into a freight train from Navasota called the Rattlers; Brandon Tennison could run or throw and took us to two straight State Championships that we unfortunately got hammered in, but he got us there. Honorable mention goes to Tony Darden, if he had played in the post 2000's era of Spread Offense football, he would have put up crazy stats. 2. Tatum --- Stephen Hodge --- Hated when Gilmer played Tatum with Hodge back there. He was fun to watch and and terrifying to face. Never saw him give up on any play, no matter how bad the situation. He could turn nothing into a TD in the blink of an eye. Skipped some Gilmer games over the years that I knew we would win easily just to watch Hodge play and he never disappointed. As mentioned earlier, Overstreet was special too. 3. Daingerfield --- Tyler Boyd --- remember watching the first game he started against Gilmer and after the game my brother and I both said, there isn't anybody in 2A (the old 2A) that can hang with Daingerfield and this QB. They are going to win multiple State Championships. Got a lot of respect for Daingerfield playing Gilmer those years. They could have easily reeled off a 45 to 50 game winning streak if they had not played Gilmer those years. 4. Mineola --- Jeremiah Crawford ---- believe he was a 4 year starter at QB? Won the State Championship his Senior year. Could run and pass. Darn good player. 5. Pleasant Grove --- Ben Harmon ---- that kid could run the PG offense to perfection. I hated when Gilmer had to play against PG when Harmon was the QB. Perfect example of right player for the right system. He was tough! 6. Henderson --- Monsta Brown --- don't know if this counts because as I remember they didn't start using him at QB till halfway through his senior season, but man, that was one strong and tough kid. I'll defer to the Henderson faithful to name who they think is their best, but I just remember this kid was awesome. 7. Carthage --- I'll defer to the Carthage faithful on this one---- Carthage has had a ton of fantastic QB's since Surratt took over. Heck, the current Surratt (sophomore) at QB could end up being the best of the bunch by the time he gets done. Y`all are always so solid at QB every year. 8. Navasota --- Shelton Eppler --- had a friend from Navasota, so I got to see Eppler play a good bit of games. Of course he had a great WR named Tren`Davian Dickson at WR that was spectacular, but Eppler could throw the ball!! Lots of great QB`s around this area!

Excellent all-around athlete, and yes I would consider him a quarterback in the sense that he was certainly a run-first option-style QB. Those count too! In fact, plenty of the names mentioned in this thread already were either triple-option and/or run-first guys. An argument could be made that Patrick "Monsta" Brown is the #2 QB in Henderson history... after Del Barnes.

Won on a late touchdown pass late in the 4th quarter. Dbs stayed with receiver for about 60yds. Receiver drifted back to about 70 yards I can only guess that they thought Tyler could not throw it that far. I could not believe that they let a receiver get behind them. Was a great game. MUSTANGMANIA
On 9/26/2023 at 10:54 AM, Mr. P said: Overton would have to break them up by different eras... Joe Johnston, Donnie Gill, Tony Jackson, Kelly Cook, Steven Sikes, Travis Jackson, Raymond Chappell, Jake Marshall, probably a few others I haven't thought of... and the Still kid likely will have to be included at some point, considering the numbers he's putting up. Mmmm. I wouldn't put Johnston or Sikes on the list. But some of the other should definitely be considered. The way I see it in Overton is that we need to look at what criteria makes any single QB our best ever. Gill was when I was but a wee lad. But from what I know he was a gamer and could move the chains. I don't know about District Championship or playoff record though. Tony Jackson won 20 games in two years including a trip to the quarterfinals, had a good passing game but we were a run heavy team back then. Kelly Cook IMO is still the best all round QB we ever had. Was a 4 year starter so his win total should be near 30 I would guess. Unfortunately we had to play Groveton and Rodney Thomas three years in a row... we lost. Travis Jackson definitely gets consideration. Took a team to the semis, and surely had 20+ wins in his career. Stat wise Marshall was king for a couple of years. Lead a couple of teams to the playoffs, but had to play Bremond, 2nd round ,senior year... we lost. That leaves us with Still. Two wins last year but set school scoring and passing records. 6-0 this year and should set new records, and at this point we should be considered a shoe in for a play off spot. And he has his Senior year still ahead of him. So is it wins, or stats, or grit that you are looking for. My money has always been with Cook! playactionpass39
I'm partial to Mike Goddard. But, most would probably say Kyler Murray. Those pesky undefeated seasons, state championships, Mr. Texas Football (twice) Gatorade Player of the Year, Heisman Trophy, All-American Honors and NFL career probably sway some voters.

ToddG
I have to say Luke Bishop, QB on Aledo’s 2013, and 14’ teams. I believe the 13’ team still holds the nations hs total points in a season record. Gritty, quick(as were the other 2 Bishop boys), and just plain “a winner” unlike his brothers, he only started 2 years, the others started 3 years. his #’s for his 2 championship years: 5,398 pass yds 70 tds 1,778 rush yds 19 tds not gawdy #’s, but still impressive for an undersized QB.
