Marshall

Old Timer YA Tittle LSU-49ers-NY Giants NFL Hall of Fame

modern era

Benny Valentine 1988 Undefeated (lost to Dallas Carter in the quarter finals 22-18 , Jessie Armstead scored with :17 left. Carter had to forfeit their entire season and that left Marshall the only undefeated team in 5A football . Marshall would have played Odessa Permian the next week in the Semi Finals and Marshall had already beated Permian earlier in the season. Converse Judson was awarded the title even though they were trounced by Carter in the title game. Marshall would have won the title if Carter would have be not allowed to play in the playoffs to begin with as the rules stated. Marshall got their revenge on Judson in 1990 beating them for the title in the Astrodome) Valentine went on to play at Tulane and then reunited with Dennis Parker at UNT and played QB

Chad Fox- 1990 State Championship-Juco and UNT briefly

Honorable Mention

CJ Byrd Back to back state title games and played qb at Southern University

Darius Jones-Baylor played DB

Wayne Nichols-Houston played DB

Allen Survia- Texas-Taft College- Raiders played DB

Gotta include Justin Hart in the honorable mention.  I think he owns the record for career passing yards and career TD's for a Maverick QB.   Over 4,000 yards if I recall..... can't remember the TD's.

If he would have had better teams around him in his early years he would have been electric.  But he was on maybe the worst Maverick team in Marshall history (2012). Capped his career off with a regional semifinals.

That 2015 team had the most electric Mav offense I can remember watching. Was the last mav team to beat Longview. Then Hart jacks his knee up the week before Texas High. Forcing us to become one dimensional. Cam Haller and Chavis Mills were still hard to stop on the ground, but Hart made the offense impossible to stop. Our only 4 year starter at Qb I remember.

Ah, I knew Steve Canter here in Jacksonville. Sadly, killed in a car crash in the late 90s. Played at A&M. His dad, Jim Canter, had quite a coaching career in Jacksonville, two semi final teams in 1974 and 1975. he was my head coach

Mmmm.  I wouldn't put Johnston or Sikes on the list.  But some of the other should definitely be considered.  The way I see it in Overton is that we need to look at what criteria makes any single QB our best ever.  Gill was when I was but a wee lad.  But from what I know he was a gamer and could move the chains.  I don't know about District Championship or playoff record though. Tony Jackson won 20 games in two years including a trip to the quarterfinals, had a good passing game but we were a run heavy team back then.  Kelly Cook IMO is still the best all round QB we ever had.  Was a 4 year starter so his win total should be near 30 I would guess.  Unfortunately we had to play Groveton and Rodney Thomas three years in a row... we lost.  Travis Jackson definitely gets consideration.  Took a team to the semis, and surely had 20+ wins in his career.  Stat wise Marshall was king for a couple of years.  Lead a couple of teams to the playoffs, but had to play Bremond, 2nd round ,senior year... we lost.  That leaves us with Still.  Two wins last year but set school scoring and passing records.  6-0 this year and should set new records, and at this point we should be considered a shoe in for a play off spot.  And he has his Senior year still ahead of him.  So is it wins, or stats, or grit that you are looking for.  My money has always been with Cook!

Imma revisit this topic.  After last seasons performance, where Still completely destroyed his own school passing record, and adding a 10 win season and a playoff victory...Im gonna give him a nudge forward in my voting. Another 8-10 wins and another PO win and he should solidify his spot at the top after this season.

Malakoff

Judd Miller 15'-17', 16' semi finals with two all-state receivers

Darion Peace 18'-20', 18' finals runner up

Mike Jones 22'-present, 22' semi finals

All three qbs have been a blessing to Koff. Hard to pick which one is better than the other, imo.

After winning the title last season and how Jones played, I think he gets the edge on the other qbs and doing it as a junior. We'll see how he does this season.

Yeah, statistically the debate is pretty much moot. Any further discussion at this point would be best QBs for each era.

Gunter.......Im gonna go with Kendall Harrison. was in 2002. Except for Dusty Thornhill on offense, he was the entire team {was stud at free safety}.  won state in 300 hurdles {37.78 at regionals)

Will 2nd Blue Flu’s assessment of Kendall.  One of the best all around athletes (Football, Baseball, Basketball and Track) I’ve coached.  Would be good in tennis and golf to I’m sure.  Only negative is living in Brock😝😝, but he does still bleed blue

Bordertown is right to tag Mallett as the best from Texas High, but people often forget that Chris Marshall was the quarterback on the 2002 state championship team, not Mallett.

Mallett far more talented.  But Chris Marshall had a knack for making the right throw to the right place at the right time. And I think Nathan Sorenson would be a close 3rd.  Nice arm and the kid could fly. I actually think he would have been more effective if he ran more (especially his Sr year)

For Celina, statistically, I believe Connor Pingleton (2015) holds most of the passing records.

But best QB of all time for the Bobcats would have to be Adam Herrin. He was either the first- or second-ever QB in Texas to win three straight state championships (1998-2000). Kyler Murray later accomplished the same feat at Allen, and Roshauud Paul did it at Bremond.

Tyler Boyd from daingerfield won three in a row. 08-10
