Pretty sure they will start 3 maybe 4 freshman tonight.

China Spring and La Vega should be moving down next year. Dawgs have had success against both so they aren't afraid of either. Personally, I don't think so, but there have been years where Region 2 was down as a whole, and a Region 3 or Region 4 team can play with them. It's a rarity, but it does happen. I say all that to say this: don't count your chickens before they hatch. Other than the Kilgore game, Carthage hasn't really faced any adversity to speak of. My two cents which probably is not worth that much.... I do not believe this thread was started by someone NOT from Carthage. Something I've noticed on social media is that non-Carthage fans love to post things like this to encourage even more Carthage hate. I can guarantee you that Carthage is NOT counting on anything. They take one game at a time. I know a lot of fine people from Carthage including coaches and they are NOT cocky and take nothing for granted. I have had the privilege to get to know a lot of people from East Texas, fans, coaches and players. I have to say that the Carthage staff, players, community is the most gracious group of people. As far as diversity, they have taken care of business when they needed to and IMO could have played Gilmer's schedule and still be undefeated. In the Kilgore game, a majority of their defense took their first varsity snaps that game. You could see how they improved as the game went on. But such a comment as yours is expected from a Gilmer fan. No offense intended just a trend I have noticed. I have had a LOT of Gilmer fans tell me they flat out hate Carthage and have called Coach Surratt some names I will not repeat. I've heard the same from PG. However, I have never heard anyone from Carthage speak ill of any program. They have a genuine respect for all teams they face. Carthage is a very young team, I believe the youngest varsity team they have fielded. That said, they are getting better each week. Their inexperience should probably make them underdogs going forward, we shall see. The Texarkana All-Stars, sorry I mean PG, has a great team. That should be a great matchup, assuming Carthage takes care of business tonight. PG has probably the most stacked, experienced team in 4A,. IF PG comes out victorious I would not consider it an upset. When you brought back most of your talent from last year and added a few then you should be the favorite, IMO. Anything can happen on any given day and any team can be beat. That is why the play the game. Good luck to all. 4

I have never said anything "bad" about Carthage, including coaches, players, and fans. The points you have made in your post are things that most of us already know, and it is what has made y'all a perennial power. I haven't seen any team that is better coached and prepared for their opponents, nor coaches who can make in game adjustments on the fly as quickly as Surratt and Preston at any level, let alone in 4A. Carthage has the deepest playbook of any team I've ever seen, and they can execute their playbook to its fullness the further the season goes along. Most of us are a little jealous of the success Carthage has had over the past 15 seasons or so. It doesn't take a genius to figure out that any state championship in 4A-D2 will go through Carthage. Yes, there will be some haters out there, but that just means you're doing something right, something most teams aspire to. Gilmer used to have, and still does have other fanbases that talk bad about us, our coaches, etc. even to this day, and we haven't had the overall success Carthage has had. It just comes with the territory.

You weren’t talking about passing games. You were talking about Carthage knowing how to put a running back in the slot. Longview has had their number one and number two running backs out wide this year, while their third string is in the backfield. We put them all over the field. Just making a point you don’t know what you’re talking about when it comes to Longview and their play calling Edited November 17, 2023 by kingwolf 1
Texlov Posted November 17, 2023 Posted November 17, 2023 Carthage and Pleasant Grove is a tossup. Depth could be a factor, but if PG is ever going to beat Carthage it's this year. Young Surratt is a stud, but I think PG qb is better. Kicking will be a key. I'm picking PG to win in a very close game. The key will be the pressure PG puts on Surratt, and PG's ability to slow Carthage's running game. It should be one to remember. Reminds me of 2006 game between Liberty-Eylau and Gilmer.

The fact he is dual threat vs pocket passer? If Carthage limits the PG run, can Johnson with with his arm?
HearEmaGrowlin Posted November 17, 2023 Posted November 17, 2023 Our Bulldogs have to take care of business tonight before we focus on PG. I will say this much today, PG will arguably be the most difficult team we’ve faced so far and possibly would/could/will (whatever) all year. Go Dawgs!

SmoakyBandito Posted November 18, 2023 Posted November 18, 2023 Carthage has improved every game, and are playing at a high level despite being one of the youngest teams I can remember at Carthage. Maybe similar to 2011, but with a lot more depth and better top end talent. Going to be a hell of a game next week. PG is legit. Have watched them a couple times this year including when they dismantled Gilmer. They have the players to hang with Carthage. If somebody is going to beat Carthage anytime soon, it better be this year. They are going to be filthy the next few seasons.

Just my opinion, PG should be the favorite given the 'experience' of the team in that they returned a majority of their starters and Carthage is SO young. Should be interesting. 1

A2J Posted November 18, 2023 Posted November 18, 2023 PG almost never kicks field goals. That lack of kicking experience will hurt in this game

That lack of kicking experience will hurt in this game I don’t think so. PG needs 7 in the red zone when you get there, not 3. How is PG on 4th down conversions for the year? That’s the more important experience/stat IMO. Can Johnson convert on 3rd & long and 4th & long through the air when needed.

I can’t see PG as the favorite with two tackles that weigh less than our linebackers going against our D line. They have many going both ways including their QB. No doubt it will be a hard fought game and the Dawgs cannot have turnovers or 15 yard penalties. I will say slight edge because of the Dawg D line and linebackers.
