This game is a Toss-Up IMO.

Really do not see how if PG wins that it would be an upset. Rankings mean nothing for one. Two PG returns a ton more than Carthage does.

I think Carthage wins the D-line battle vs PG O-Line.

I think PG D-Line vs Carthage O-Line could be a wash.

PG Secondary > Carthage Secondary

Special teams Carthage wins

Athlete for Athlete PG wins

Speed PG wins

Coaching Carthage wins.

We all know games are won in the trenches. I think PG will try to get the ball out quick to limit Carthage D-line, I also think they will try and run the ball on the exterior. I think Carthage will go more ground and pound for the first time this season minus the LE game, I also think Carthage passing game will be more shorter choice routes.

All in all it comes down to turnovers and big plays and which team can get the other off the field on 3rd down. I have no prediction but it has the makings to be a good one.

look for Carthage inexperience in the secondary to be a little bit of a problem along with some guys possibly playing both ways to contain PG speed.

I don’t think Johnson is going to have enough time to sit in the pocket.  So he will be doing a lot of rolling right and throwing on the run under pressure.  Look for many no gains, or short gains, with Johnson running out of bounds.  That is going to take a lot of pressure off the Carthage DB’s.  They may even get an INT or two.  I also see Jackson taking on a more blocking TE role in this game which takes away a weapon PG has been using a lot this year.

The average score of a PG game this year has been 51-15, or a 36-point differential.

For CHS, it’s 44-10, which is a 34-point average margin of victory.

Of the 3 common opponents, PG beat Pittsburg and Rusk by an average of 20 points more than did CHS. However, CHS beat Liberty-Eylau by 27 points more than did PG.

P G will have some plays of 15+ yards - the QB is quick enough to make a few missed tackles for a long run here and there and P G’s height advantage will probably result in some “jump ball” receptions……Carthage keeping these explosive plays from being TDs will be important because P G will not be able to make long sustained drives.
As far as speed/quickness these teams are about as equal as you can get.

Advantage PG. Johnson is more accurate throwing on the run when compared with drop backs.

Been almost 3 months since I've laid eyes on either one of these teams. I remember PG having some freakish looking players and a lot of team speed. I've heard they could have as many as 9 D-1 players on their roster. Carthage was young when we played them, but their D-line and RB's are second to none. Looking at their schedules, they've both had relatively light lifting the last couple of months. Everything considered, I have to take Carthage in this one. Their defense is legit and they're probably going to be more well-prepared in the special teams aspect. And this is basically a state championship game in the 3rd round. Can someone remind me what Surratt's record is in state championship games?

9 D1 athletes.  Cmon man.    If PG has 9 they SHOULD blow Carthage out.

Blow Carthage out because of 9 D1 players?

How many you think Carthage may have?

It’s not like Carthage always only has two or three top line players.

I think the poster was pointing out that PG having 9 D1 players is a huge exaggeration. I agree. Neither PG or Carthage has ever had 9 D1 players on their roster at the same time. They both might have 3-4…probably not though. I agree with the previous guy. If PG has 9 legit D1 players on their roster Carthage is in a big trouble.

I will respectfully disagree with the “athlete for athlete PG wins” opinion.

Very rarely does anyone out athlete Carthage.

I think you’ll be incorrect on shorter routes from our passing attack.

Our receivers are long and can run and go up and get it.
This will be a great game.  I believe our defense will get after PG like they’ve not experienced this season and the Carthage offense we’ll see will be the no nonsense version, which means a power run game, but still with plenty of flare in the passing game.

If you are talking seniors only, probably/maybe correct.
Counting seniors and underclassmen, they both have/had had more than that.
