Okay, for a few quick observations:

1. Gilmer deserved to win tonight.  They had the game wrapped up.  All Tennison has to do is slide down after gaining the 1st down and Gilmer runs out the clock and wins 37-36.  I’m glade the Buckeyes wound up winning, but the TD made a Carthage win possible.  Someone should have told the kids one more 1st down ends it.  I don’t think Surrat let them score. He had to be playing to get the ball back with 30 seconds left with a chance to win outright.  He couldn’t take the risk of a Gilmer player getting the 1st Down, getting down, and running out the clock.

2.  That said, Carthage still had to go 75 yards with 1:49 left and no time outs and then convert on the 2 pt try.  I don’t know what it is with Gilmer, but they have struggled all year on defense with less than a minute left in the half / game.  But give credit to Carthage for the drive.

3.  Gilmer won the game tonight through the air.  Henderson and Tennison had some big plays in the running game. But they won by passing the football.  Great game by Tennison, Webb, Noble, and Tate.  And the seam route to Henderson to give Gilmer the lead in the 4th quarter was a thing of beauty.

4.  Fans might want to complain about the refs, but this was an evenly called game.  There was only one horrible call, and that was the fumble that wasn’t on Carthage’s first possession of the 2nd half.  What made the call so awful was the explanation:  the runner’s forward progress was stopped.  That doesn’t matter, the running back was still fighting for yards and the whistle had not blown.  So the play is still live.  If the ref had said his knee was down, I would still disagree but the play would have been technically dead at that point.  But the play was still live because the whistle had not blown.  Awful call there, but overall not much to complain about from the refs.

5.  Give Gilmer defense some credit:  When Carthage went up 36-24, most people thought the game was over.  But Gilmer got a field goal, a Defensive Stop, and then the TD that put them ahead.  Gilmer scored 17 unanswered points in the 4th quarter due to some huge defensive stops.

6.  Pate.  Wow.  Ice Water in the veins.  3 field goals, each longer than the previous one.  And the huge punt that led to the muff.  Great game.

7.  If any college scout was watching, Will Henderson can be a D1 cornerback.  The play where he fought through the block to blow up the screen was incredible, and his interception was also great.  For not playing much out there all season, he looked good.

I’ve been waiting 9 years to say this:  WE BEAT CARTHAGE!!  Great game by both teams, great plays on both sides of the ball.  Now Gilmer don’t have a let down for Glen Rose.

I had a lot to complain about the refs during the game but as I’m rewatching the game now I would say you are right. All those “bad calls” or “bad no calls” looked to be correct.

I think I was the only Gilmer fan that wasn’t excited when Cadon scored the last TD in regulation. I knew we gave them the only chance they had and I knew they would take advantage.

As someone pointed out, I don’t think the game plan was to let us score but to stop us. But if we happen to get the 1st down then let off and see if we will run it in which we obviously did. Hats off to Carthage for doing what they had to do to tie the game after that.

I was nervous going into OT and even more nervous after only getting a FG in OT. Gilmer’s defense has been a major discussion point, how poetic that the DEFENSE makes a huge stop to win the game?

I just watched Gilmer’s final TD and they absolutely let us score.

Just rewatched the game and it's a miracle that it was even close! So many uncharacteristic mistakes by Carthage. And all the drops!

Gilmer can win this game …… A really good sprinter at RB, a quick QB(they might play 2), a fast and good WR, and another WR with pretty good speed - Carthage does not come to play defense or has lapses and Gilmer can put up a bunch of points.
Carthage has the potential to blow them out, but has to come ready and stay focused.

Congrats to the Buckeyes……Both Gilmer lines played well, and a lot better than the P G game several weeks ago.  The difference in speed was very noticeable when G had the ball.

Oh we'll still get that. And how Scott Surratt could take over the Oakland Raiders and easily stroll to a super bowl because he wins in small school divisions in TX Hs LOL!

That would never happen. He wouldn’t take that big of a pay cut.

I completely doubted Gilmer .

Battered Dawg syndrome. I was always hoping for this day and cherish this moment. Thank you and be expecting loads of Christmas cards from the rest of the state .

Nope, not buying that. Carthage scored 6 times, Gilmer scored 9 times. And Carthage was stopped on their first possession except for a face mask call that had to be called but didn’t affect the outcome of the play. And Gilmer wound up with a field goal on first and goal at the 1.  If either of those situations is different this game never gets to OT. Both teams are good teams. Both teams made mistakes.  But Gilmer moved the ball all night.

Y’all did, but don’t forget about we forced y’all to punt and our returner decided to try to catch it over his head running toward our goal line and whiffed, giving y’all the ball back.

Also, #8 pushing your runner just out of bounds on what would’ve then made it 4th & 6, instead, personal foul automatic first down.

Gilmer earned this win.  You can also say Carthage made critical errors throughout the night.

Great game by Gilmer and massive victory for your community with some sadness that’s taken place recently.  Enjoy having defeated our Bulldogs and best of luck moving forward, I hope y’all win state.

Go Dawgs!

How? Cmon, We all know Carthage will be back.
To see a team sophomore heavy go this far and do what they did, that’s something special! I always said. If your going to beat Carthage you better do it this year.

Now for the game. Carthage beat themselves. Costly dropped passes a couple turnovers. Young mistakes and it happens.

Oh we know they will be back. Embrace this for what it is.

Congratulations to the Gilmer Buckeyes on a well-deserved victory. Yall were clearly better, especially at the skill positions. Outplayed Carthage in all three phases. Hope you guys go on and get that ring!

Also, welcome to all the haters from the schools that did not beat Carthage out of the playoffs, nor did they make it to the 4th round of the playoffs. Glad y'all couldn't wait to get on here and celebrate the loss of a team that y'all hate for being good. Except the poster from center, I don't understand why you are mad your Daddy got beat.

Enjoy the victory Bux, but get back to work! Two more! This Dawg is cheering for you!

Congrats on the win Gilmer! Carthage has proven to be a very tough opponent. But now you have to focus on the next one! From one orange and black team to another, gotta keep working!

Unreal choke by Carthage. But, they’re young and the farther you go the more intense the pressure gets. I look for them to win state next year and the next. Congratulations to Gilmer! Wow! After the start to their season, who envisioned this?! NO ONE.

Does anyone have a number for the Gilmer boosters club. I'd love to send them money.  Coaches recruiting season is now in full swing. Be careful be very careful

This replaces the Gilmer / Gladewater game from 2014 as the best HS football game I’ve ever seen

That Gilmer/Jasper state game was epic also

Yep, they said that game was the state championship. Well, Gilmer had something to say about that.

They said hello and beat us fair and square.

Good luck, Buckeyes.
