I never said who would win the game, only countered crazy talk running Bellville down. Bellville gave a good account, but Gilmer is the better team. I remember you saying , you did not see a scenario in which Gilmer could win this game. Is that not the same as picking Belleville. Just asking. 3

Aggie98 Posted December 16, 2023 Posted December 16, 2023 I am by no means a Gilmer fan, about as far from it as you can get. But I have been pulling for them this season because nearly everyone in East Texas was throwing them under the bus in September, including most of their own Smoaky fans. "Worst defense we've had since the 90's" I remember reading on here... and "we'll make the playoffs and probably get knocked out in the 2nd round". It was nice to see the Gilmer staff and players prove all the haters wrong by knocking off #1 in the quarterfinals and then for the ultimate irony.... they held the #1 scoring offense in the state to 32 points below their season scoring average in the title game. Helluva coaching job by Metzel and #1 is a bad, bad dude. 2 5

So here it is: 1. Gilmer was +1 in the turnover battle, and that was the difference in the game. 2. That being said, Gilmer took a knee inside the 10 to end the game. If Bellville kicks the field goal (instead of the interception) who’s to say Gilmer doesn’t win yet another game this year on another game ending field goal? 3. I’m not sure if Henderson is the best Buckeye of all time. I think I might still give that to Stump or Kris Boyd. But this was the best individual season of any Buckeye ever. Routinely got hard yards after first contact. 4. Gilmer Defense. Wow. Best showing of the year. And that side of the ball is pretty young for Gilmer. Ditto about Gilmer Dline being a beast next season. 5. This was supposed to be a showdown between the speed of Gilmer and the strength of Belleville. But Gilmer was the more physical team almost all night long. 6. 99 was a great player, but not a game wrecker. He made some plays, but Gilmer did a good job of running away from him or allowing him to overrun the play and take himself out of the action. He didn’t have near the impact on the game as Mack did in that 2014 game. This was just a great season and a great group of kids for Gilmer. The team and the entire community came together. I could do a whole different post on Gilmer, state championships, and tragedy. Football season is over, but loving and supporting these kids will continue. Hopefully this helped some small way in the healing process. 3 1 3

Great job Coach Metzel and staff!! Maybe the ghost of Coach Traylor is gone!

CasualObserver70 Posted December 16, 2023 Posted December 16, 2023 Metzel has been to 3 state championships in 4 years as head coach. Knocked out last year by the eventual champion Carthage. More importantly, he has established a culture that permeates through the program. I know everyone likes to complain about the coach, but it’s hard to argue with that kind of success. 3

He assembled a great staff, many with HC experience. All with the same mindset. Good stuff. 3

Then won 3 district championships in the last 4 year, this year was the odd year out without a win, but went on to win state, incredible consistency.

Maybe because I was more focused on our Dline though lol. They have their best years ahead of them. This Buckeye defense is going to be scary next year. Congrats to Buckeye Nation! Well deserved.
poisoned10 Posted December 16, 2023 Posted December 16, 2023 Gilmer’s DEFENSE of all things and Will Henderson was the major difference in this game! Outside of the 3 big plays allowed in the 1st half Bellville was able to do little vs the Buckeye defense. Bellville’s offense was only able to gain 77 yards in the 2nd half after gaining 282 in the 1st half. And Will Henderson capped off what might have been the greatest season ever for any Buckeye player with another 250+ yard performance. Will is a special young man and an exceptional athlete. I’m glad he was on our team! A interesting note, last week, Bellville stopped a Wimberly 2-point conversion to win the game, this week Gilmer stops a Bellville 2-point conversion to essentially win the game. Funny how things play out sometimes. I’ll be completely honest, I was one of the doubters of this team. After the 1st 6 games, I expected Gilmer to get knocked out early on and even thought Center had a good chance to beat us. Well I’ll gladly eat that crow and just say that this coaching staff has done amazing things this year in getting the right players into the right positions in the right times and doing the right things. Proud of my team, my coaches, my players and my town! It’s a GREAT day to be a #Buckeye 1 1 1
Lion7000 Posted December 16, 2023 Posted December 16, 2023 I got to hand it to Bellville they played hard and can easily see why they were 15-0. Gilmer played the heart of the champion and redeemed themselves from an early start . Gilmer was tough but Henderson kid was a special player. Was exiting seeing that kid play. He will excel on Saturdays.
