I'm sorry to say this......but IMHO the Gilmer PLAYERS won this game DESPITE the Gilmer coaching staff.....they are as dumb as rocks.  There.....I said it.  My brother concurs.

Disagree! The halftime adjustments by the Defensive staff was the difference in the game. Giving the Offensive Coaches a shout out too. The Gilmer QB was off all night and kept under throwing his receivers other than the 1 great pass to #3. Coaches went to the ground game and the Gilmer Oline took over

#1 for Gilmer best individual performance I've witnessed in a while.

I'm not sure  about week in and week out but today he looked like the best back in 4a.

He was definitely the X factor.

I repeat: is he a junior (as indicated in today’s telecast) or a senior (as shown in the program for last week’s Glen Rose game)?

Like I said from the beginning, whoever wins will be the better team. Gilmer is the better team. I never said who would win the game, only countered crazy talk running Bellville down. Bellville gave a good account, but Gilmer is the better team.

I remember you saying , you did not see a scenario in which Gilmer could win this game. Is that not the same as picking Belleville. Just asking.

I admit I didn’t give them a chance but glad i was wrong.

If I was a betting man I would probably bet on Belleville. I was rooting for Gimer and East Texas though. I also was wrong and glad for it.

It can be whatever you want it to be. Transcript is available for everyone. I said many times that if Gilmer were to win they would be the better team. Nothing changed.

I am by no means a Gilmer fan, about as far from it as you can get. But I have been pulling for them this season because nearly everyone in East Texas was throwing them under the bus in September, including most of their own Smoaky fans. "Worst defense we've had since the 90's" I remember reading on here... and "we'll make the playoffs and probably get knocked out in the 2nd round". It was nice to see the Gilmer staff and players prove all the haters wrong by knocking off #1 in the quarterfinals and then for the ultimate irony.... they held the #1 scoring offense in the state to 32 points below their season scoring average in the title game. Helluva coaching job by Metzel and #1 is a bad, bad dude.

Looking forward to seeing @CasualObserver70 break this one down. How sweet it is

Thanks for the props!  So here it is:

1. Gilmer was +1 in the turnover battle, and that was the difference in the game.
2. That being said, Gilmer took a knee inside the 10 to end the game. If Bellville kicks the field goal (instead of the interception) who’s to say Gilmer doesn’t win yet another game this year on another game ending field goal?
3. I’m not sure if Henderson is the best Buckeye of all time.  I think I might still give that to Stump or Kris Boyd. But this was the best individual season of any Buckeye ever.  Routinely got hard yards after first contact.
4. Gilmer Defense.  Wow.  Best showing of the year.  And that side of the ball is pretty young for Gilmer.  Ditto about Gilmer Dline being a beast next season.
5. This was supposed to be a showdown between the speed of Gilmer and the strength of Belleville.  But Gilmer was the more physical team almost all night long.
6. 99 was a great player, but not a game wrecker.  He made some plays, but Gilmer did a good job of running away from him or allowing him to overrun the play and take himself out of the action.  He didn’t have near the impact on the game as Mack did in that 2014 game.

This was just a great season and a great group of kids for Gilmer.  The team and the entire community came together. I could do a whole different post on Gilmer, state championships, and tragedy. Football season is over, but loving and supporting these kids will continue.  Hopefully this helped some small way in the healing process.

Great post! Coaching staff did a great job with this Team! Been a bunch of haters all year dogging out this staff. Great job Coach Metzel and staff!! Maybe the ghost of Coach Traylor is gone!

Metzel has been to 3 state championships in 4 years as head coach.  Knocked out last year by the eventual champion Carthage. More importantly, he has established a culture that permeates through the program. I know everyone likes to complain about the coach, but it’s hard to argue with that kind of success.

What years were Gilmer in the SC game with Metzel? I thought this was his only appearance as a HC?

Metzel’s interview after the game was just great!  He gets it.  He assembled a great staff, many with HC experience.  All with the same mindset.  Good stuff.

Then won 3 district championships in the last 4 year, this year was the odd year out without a win, but went on to win state, incredible consistency.

Agreed. I was more impressed by our defense, than theirs. I also didnt see the big hype about #99. Maybe because I was more focused on our Dline though lol. They have their best years ahead of them. This Buckeye defense is going to be scary next year.

Congrats to Buckeye Nation! Well deserved.
