Ken Purcell

I had to look up who Ken Purcell was since he was commentating on the state championship games. He is touted as winning 12 rings. Did he ever coach a championship as a head coach?

Only places that I found where head coach was White Deer & Allen where most he won was 10 with 3 L

Here is an article on Coach Purcell. I Don’t know if you have seen this, but it pretty much tells it all. It is a little sketchy on him winning a state Championship as Head coach in Plano, but I think he did. Anyway, that big ole’ ring he wears, is for his AD ring of honor induction. He was DISD AD when Denton Ryan won its first State Championship.

Used to be head coach at Allen and Plano

Coach Purcell was never Plano's head coach, he was an assistant on their 1977 title game and 1978 state runner-up

No

Regional Finals two years in a row, 1986 and 87 at Allen. Won one or two as an assistant at Plano.

Pretty interesting.  Is he taking credit for championships outside of football during his tenure as an AD?  I'm confused.

per the texas high school football history website

He was the head coach at Allen from 82-94. had 3 ten win seasons, but never won a title as a head coach. So based on that all his titles came as either an assistant or AD roles.

Same thing we accomplish with any thread on Smoaky.   Just talking.  I think people are just interested in the 12 rings and where they came from.  It's not like the Spanish Inquistion.  Seems like an interesting story.  We have records of coaches who won championships, and he's not on them.  Just a discussion.  Not hurting anyone.  I doubt Bally Sports is going to check Smoaky and say "They are questioning Ken's rings, we should fire him!"

that's actually what I was thinking digging through all this muck and figuring too...he was an assistant or administrator for all the championships. surprised he didn't claim all the team tennis championships too while in admin.

Tim Buchannan's 8 rings as HFC is probably more impressive. Surratt is right there behind him. 

I have seen schools list how many state championships, but a list of most rings as a hfc coach would be interesting.

He is a hack.  Is basically a caricature of himself.  The big ole cowboy hat and giant ring that evidently he had no part of winning is ridiculous.  He adds no value to broadcast.

He actually adds great value to the show and makes it entertaining. He's also probably volunteering his time or being paid a measly amount to promote and advance the sport of football in Texas. Cut the man some slack and try being appreciative.

Have to agree he doesn't bring much to the broadcast. I'd much rather see a top tier current head coach come on and give some insight to what they are seeing. For example have Surrat come on and tell us what he is seeing or even have the Liberty Hill guy do the Franklin or Bellville game and give some breakdowns.

Heck, you would have to spend quite a bit of money for all those rings.  Carthage has its own TV broadcast team. You could always help them out.

It doesn't bother me that Coach Purcell never won a state title as a head coach.  He was the ONLY one on the state championship broadcast team who picked Gilmer over Bellville.  He must know something the others are clueless about...

He's a WHOLE LOT BETTER than our broadcast team at spotting. Heck, they even know what's happening on the field.  They are a good broadcast team, comparatively speaking.  With our team, if your not actually watching the game you have absolutely NO idea where the ball is, or even what's going on on the field sometimes.  They have NO idea how to spot.  They can be several yards off on where the ball is, and they just throw a number out there for yards on gains, losses, punts, etc., and even the line of scrimmage can be off by a few yards, and they don't even correct themselves when they are off.  That's just sad.  They are also a bit too homer, which I don't have a problem with, but sometimes they holler so loud when something good happens that you can't understand them, and that pushes the homerism way overboard.  I understand that these guys are all volunteers, so I shouldn't complain, but toning it down a bit, and understanding how important spotting is would make it a lot more tolerable.
