Maybe they were waiting for the state championships to be done?  Maybe they didn’t get the applicants pool they were hoping for?

They need to go ahead and try to speed it up. It’s hard enough to find coaches and the closer to sooner it gets, the harder it’ll be.

Might pick the tree down the road off a state champion staff.

They already got one but that was due to the superintendent from Koff but he already had ties with Kerens already. I doubt they would get any of the long-time assists, imo.

Great guy. I hope they let him do his job.

If he learned anything from when he was AD/HFC at Bruceville is to go somewhere that he can call the shots without interference, otherwise I wouldve seen him filling that open spot again to be closer to his kids who still reside in B-E.

To be honest this surprised a lot of people. He was already thinking about retiring and giving it one more year at Koff and then retiring, from what I heard. His wife retired last year from being the middle school principal at Koff.

He was making more money at Koff than what the former AD/HC at Kerens too. Maybe Kerens offered him something that he couldn't pass up and probably more money. I think he'll be there for a couple of years and will retire, imo.

I don't mean this in a bad way or anything like that. I hope he makes an impression there and gets Kerens where he hopes they can be. Wish him all the best.

Yea thats what his son was saying is he was considering retiring after finally getting a State Championship, but at the same time he is very prideful in his work and probably wanted 1 last shot at HFC since B-E didn't work out real well.

It is shocking.  Malakoff has another run in them and he is towards the end of the ride as far as coaching and teaching goes.  He has been with Driskel since the beginning so him leaving is a little shocking.  As you said, must be an offer that couldnt be turned down.  The Sup was a former Malakoff guy as well if I read right.

Maybe him and the Malakoff A.D. had a falling out, or maybe he won a ring, and wants to run his own show, and see if he can turn a program around. I always like to see guys that have things going their way (comfortable), and shake things up. Everyone in this business worth their salt likes a challenge. Hats off to this coach for striving to do something that will be a bigger challenge than calling D for a loaded team.

Yes, he was the high school principal for a few of years. Was considered to be next in line when Perry retired along with Snow at the time. Then the school board did a 180 and hired the current sup, which was surprising and upset a lot folks here. A lot of surrounding schools are gaining our good teachers and coaches. Kerens being one of them but I don't think that had a hand in Watkins decision in going to Kerens.

He ran his own show at Bruceville Eddy prior to Malakoff, however B-E is a trainwreck with the little talent they do have coming up going to surrounding schools.

You do know that he's been there since Driskell has first showed up and helped turn around the program that was once a door mat and maybe it what it is today. It hasn't been a loaded team as you say. I think he has proven that he can help get a team where it needs to be. I highly doubt Driskell and him had a falling out. Driskell gives a lot of praise to his staff and the kids.
