Red90fly
Why did the UIL decide to have HS soccer season start in January and February when its the coldest time of the year? Seems the most sense would be to start in March and be a spring sport.

My guess is that was the only time of year enough coaches and facilities would be available.....spring calendar is already packed

I know track and baseball/softball, but I wouldn't think soccer games would have an impact on those events. Just stinks from my POV because my youngest daughter does basketball and soccer and is pretty good at both and knowing she'll eventually have to choose one over the other in HS. The stupidest part of Texas soccer is that you play 90% of the season in the coldest time of the year, but the playoffs take place in march when the weather temp and conditions drastically increase and change. bordertown
Prior to the UIL sanctioning soccer, the higher level soccer was club soccer (not affiliated with schools). In order to play for the clubs, the players agreed not to play on another team. The clubs played from early spring to late fall. The clubs agreed to let their players play for their school teams when their club was not playing. Hence, UIL adopted January to March as the season. Understand like many sports, club is the highest level of competition and where most kids earn scholarships. From Coppell Gazette - “Soccer was a major of topic at Tuesday’s UIL meeting. The Colony head boys soccer coach Lee Weddall was relieved to see the committee reject the proposal to move soccer from a spring sport to a fall sport. Given there are just four players on his high school team that play club soccer, he felt it would have given his Cougars a leg up on other area high schools, especially those with more players that play club soccer. But from a competitive standpoint, Weddall said that would have forced players to make a tough decision. “I think it would have caused chaos with club soccer, and it would have forced the players to make a choice,” he said. “Without hesitation, they would have chosen club. It would have devalued the high-school product.” Edited January 12 by bordertown
Mavchamp
IMHO....fall is out of the question because of football. Lots of schools have football all on one field 7-12. That might be 7 teams or more for some schools.... they are already using the field 3-4 nights a week for junior high, freshman, JV, and varisty. Some schools wouldn't have a field open for soccer. I agree playing in Dec-Feb is dumb. And it's ridiculous for fans trying to sit through it often times. Moving it to Mar-April to start makes issues for baseball and softball for some players.... there will always be conflicts. Baseball conflicts with spring football. Volleyball conflicts with cross country. Basketball and Soccer conflict. Sometimes choices need to be made. There would be some facility issues in the spring too..... soccer/track and field/spring football. But strictly from a fan point of view...... Jan/Feb games are BRUTAL and it def has stymied attendance compared to other sports.
