JustAFan11 Posted January 4, 2024 Posted January 4, 2024 DT Byron Murphy declares for the draft. RB Jonathan Brooks declares for the draft. For the first time in many years player development is showing at Texas.

He did get better with his determination as the year went on but I am a bit concerned with his overall "toughness". I am not sure what his pain management level is. I noticed during the UW game, when he pulled up lame late in the game on the far sideline, one of the coaches was really into his ear as they walked back across the field. From the looks of the expression from the coach he was telling Baxter to "suck it up". I hear ya. Hopefully I'm wrong about Blue. Will be interesting to see how Red fits in all of this too. Sark definitely likes Red.
Mr. P Posted January 5, 2024 Posted January 5, 2024 (To bring this back to the topic), case in point: Quinn Ewers. Could he go pro now? Yes. Would he be drafted? Almost certainly. So, why stay?

I just don't see it as a negative. I'm of the mind that T-Law could've benefited from some seasoning. It wouldn't have raised his value any, so I don't blame him for bouncing.
Red90fly Posted January 5, 2024 Posted January 5, 2024 Jerrin Thompson and Trill Carter to the portal. Ryan Watts not returning. Brooks and Murphy declared for the NFL.

They’ve done research that supports that number as being critical for a QBs success in the NFL. For Quinn everything he has done has been with the NFL in mind. I don’t think he’d be at Texas now if Sark weren’t the coach. Had he not had the injuries the last 2 seasons he may be leaving school this season. 1

Not much of it was empty calories either. Robinson led the team in YPC. Baxter did more as a true freshman than any back since, Jamaal Charles? It's not hard to see the trajectory he is on...future 1st/2nd rounder. Blue is a situational back, not a bell cow. There are levels to this. Bobby Burton and CJ Vogel both said that the light bulb has come on for Blue and he has taken critical coaching to heart. I know most think that him foregoing his senior season was a sign of selfishness. I was one also. I was sure he would portal out after riding the pine last year, but he stuck with it and took advantage of his opportunities after Brooks went down.
ANTI Posted January 6, 2024 Posted January 6, 2024 Of everyone declaring, I'll miss Sanders the most. Watched him up close even in HS, torched my Lobos in the playoffs back in 2020. If Bowers is a better TE prospect than Sanders, it's not by much.
Red90fly Posted January 7, 2024 Posted January 7, 2024 Center Jake Majors is returning. That'll be 4/5 of the OL returning. Big Cam Williams probably takes over at RT (started KSU game). IT also said it's no guarantee Hayden Conner starts next year at LG and that Neto Umeozulu and Cole Hutson will have every opportunity to start.

I would love to land Judkins through the portal .... TE has to be the biggest question mark with Sanders declaring. Matter of fact, we need to land a portal TE badly but I wonder if it's too late in the game. 2nd area of concern for me is interior DL. Thank goodness Collins is coming back but Carter and Ross hit the portal. Murphy and Sweat declared. We lost a lot of bodies in the middle of the DL. Good news is behind them, LB should be very strong. Anthony Hill probably moves over to Mike LB, Trey Moore at Will. Nasty combo. Sark has recruited LB very well since being at Texas though, so wouldn't be shocked if they asked Trey Moore to be a full blown rushing DE....pushing someone like Sorrell to the inside. Texas will be one of the most dangerous pass rushing teams in America next year.

He’s the #2 TE in the draft, prolly go 1st-2nd round. Can’t say I blame him for going. I think if he can become a little better blocking and work on his ball skills dude will be playing for a while. What’s behind him in the TE room at Texas? Watched plenty of Texas this year and Sark does a great job utilizing the Y.

Baxter and Blue are not in that category .... without a threat at RB, the better defenses they play will just pin their ears back and come after Ewers ....
cotton84 Posted January 7, 2024 Posted January 7, 2024 2nd Team all-American RB on the all freshman team is just not enough for some.

Did any of us think Brooks would be the top RB in the country before his injury? Dont get me wrong, Baxter and Blue need to step up in the spring and summer workouts and continue developing. They’ll get there with more reps and the understanding that they’re the guys now.
Valhalla Posted January 7, 2024 Posted January 7, 2024 I would be much more worried about WR than RB if I was a Texas fan. 1

There will be plenty of battles this spring which will make things more interesting than last spring. Last year things were pretty set, there was IOL battles that were won via injury, so no real battle. This year you’ll have battles at RB, WR, S, LB, RT, and DT, probably could add LG as well. Texas has a bunch of young guys looking to crack the rotation from Sarks previous classes but also 17 early enrollees from the 24 class. They’ve brought in a pass rusher, speed receiver, and safety/nickel through the portal thus far and looks like a DT from Houston could be joining soon. Spring practices will bring a lot of intrigue.
Valhalla Posted January 8, 2024 Posted January 8, 2024 Is Texas going to be desperate enough at WR to bring in Evan Stewart?
