That’s been a consistently good program over the years! 🏀 Those Grapeland folks like their basketball.

It wasn’t 2 years  ago

Gotcha. I guess I’m thinking program overall with tradition. I’m not familiar with 2 years ago. Through the years they’ve been pretty consistently competitive. 🤷‍♂️

Their boys are always solid. The girls have been up and down.

Kind of that way with softball. I remember some very good teams through the years, but then they didn’t even field a team year before last (I think). CADIE BELL & co. were something else.

Hat tip to our Alto coaching staff for leading the way this summer. Great program, high energy, motivational, and well attended.

#SummerPride2k24 by the numbers:

- 73 boys 7-12 made a workout this summer
- 44 boys average at each workout this summer
- 3 days of 50+ attendance
- 43 7th-9th grade boys at football camp

One of the motivating factors of the program that I believe really contributed to the success was the individual challenge presented to each student athlete. Then the recognition of goals attained and progress made by each young man. The coaches featured those individuals (examples below) & also “Iron Jackets” so that parents, family, friends, and fans could help encourage and celebrate.  Intrinsic motivation, positive peer pressure, plus recognition and praise from “the folks”….that’s good stuff.

Overall a very productive summer!

Alto has 6 kids 4.7 or better 40. 5 are right at 6 ft or taller. How did they not win a game last year? Those good #s for 2A.

We will be improved this season. Last year….inexperienced small line, loss of leadership from the class before them, and literally 3 seniors, 1 of whom was practically carrying the team on his shoulders. The line was all new but one and the JV the year before did not have a complete season so when I say they were inexperienced…woah. They were. At least one was a first time football player as a sophomore. We were up in many games last season in the second half but did not finish.

I believe it will be a different kind of year from last. Not even “I believe.”  Strike that. It will. Already is. Summer workouts were phenomenal with high participation and what I saw tonight of who is coming up in our middle school program. VERY encouraging. Bigger numbers too! We have 38 7th and 8th graders. They are gonna win games. Also we have enough to have a complete JV season. That’s gonna be huge because we’ve been lacking there the last couple years. We even have some kids who are back and I was really glad to see them in black and gold! That helps also.

Oh and there was the whole UIL thing (#%*+?!😡) on top of that….which for some who might not be intrinsically motivated, is killer. Perfect storm of c r a p, hence worst record in 46 years.

Overall tonight though, feeling pretty good about our season!

Good luck. Just takes 1 win to get it going.

Thank you for that. Agree 💯.  Need that first win and that will mean a ton.

All the best to the Bearcats this season (Beckville I presume?)!

JD Pearman, who passed away earlier this year, was honored for his 46 years as the PA announcer and radio play-by-play for the Alto Yellowjackets tonight at Meet the Jackets. We will miss him tremendously. If you knew JD you will enjoy this video (link below) that was shown tonight and put together by Coach Tray Reagan. It starts with the final seconds of the radio broadcast of the 2006 state championship! (FYI the other broadcaster, Randall, is my uncle, who is also deceased.)

“For almost 8 decades, the young men of South Cherokee County have put on the black and gold in search of that championship; they’ve come close, but Alto, your Jackets are the champions! Woo! Listen to the crowd!”

We will miss hearing his voice proclaim:

”Touchdown! Alto Yellowjackets!” which is at the end of the short video.

It’s only appropriate that JD’s nephew, Lee, takes over those duties alongside his dad, Bob, who has run the scoreboard for as many years (46!) as JD.

Good folks.

I miss the Garrison vs Alto rivalry  ... hope we can get ya'll back on the Dawgs  schedule again soon ....

I hope so too, Kirt. Historically a battle and a fun week leading up to the game.

I may have mentioned this before but my first born arrived on the day Alto played at Garrison in October of 1998 (her actual due date!). That was a top 10 matchup that year and we were playing Garrison for the district title. I can remember thinking no baby comes on their due date and we actually spent the night before making spirit jugs for the game. Turns out babies DO sometimes come on their due date! 😂 I don’t miss many ballgames but I missed that one! Lol JD and Randall welcomed over the radio the newest Yellowjacket as we listened to the game from the hospital room. The Jackets won that night 15-10 over the Bulldogs and the very next week that one-week old girl was in the press box at her first Alto home game (vs. Joaquin). Lol

First few football practices in the books for Yellowjackets

Alto High School kicked off fall practice bright and early Monday morning at 12:01 a.m. and so far, head football coach and athletic director Brock Grigsby said he likes what he has seen.

“We opened up with a midnight practice, very exciting,” Grigsby said. “It was the first time we’ve ever done anything like that. We were really excited. The kids were excited.

“We brought them back yesterday, had our second practice and today (Wednesday), the first day of school, was our third (practice). We’re happy where we are.”

Grigsby said 43 high school athletes have shown up for practice.

“We’ve been happy with that number,” the coach said. “That’s the best since I’ve been here.”

Of those 43, 14 are seniors, Grigsby said.

“It’s a really good senior class, a great group of kids,” he said. “They’ve done everything we’ve ever asked of them.”

This season will be Grigsby’s third year at Alto and his first in which he and his Yellowjackets will be eligible for the playoffs after a two-year suspension.

“That’s been a breath of life into the whole program,” he said. “It has changed everything. We’ve been happy man. We’ve been excited.”

Alto is slated to scrimmage against Shelbyville on the road Friday, Aug. 16, then at Troup Thursday Aug. 22 before kicking off the season in Groveton on Friday, Aug. 30.
