VerumDixit
I honestly prefer playing games on Thursday anyways. You can actually have somewhat of a weekend if you are a coach.
TrumpisDump
SMH I blame these sorry parents. Most played JV until they were in their mid 20s, and then yell or blame the coaches for their offspring to play like straight dog . Parents aren't gonna get any better. Might as well bite the bullet and up the pay for officials. Money solves a lot of problems.

Meetings during the week might have to take time off for, then leave an hr or so early on thursday, then leave 1-3+ hours early on friday.

Like, I don’t get paid after 40 hours. Today, we didn’t have any school vehicles left, so I am driving my own to Merkel. I don’t get paid mileage for that. Some of the people of the people I work with can be childish jerks. However, after 16 years, I have come to realize that is just part of job. I can either love it, like I do, or quit and do something else. Getting to a game 3 hours early seems excessive. But to each their own!

I could see an increase in pay on a Friday night game. Refs are getting one game that night. Lots at stake, and that's where the shortage is hitting the hardest. I don't know if small schools can afford much more for sub varsity officials. A three man crew or more may work a B,7,8th, and JV. That's over $600 for a game thats not bringing in much at the gate. I doubt many or any at all are getting to the game site 3 hours early but they do have to travel and be there 1-2 hours before kickoff.

StangtilDeath
I forget what we paid the refs for the Saturday youth games but I think it was around $45 per game with 4 games a day.
StangtilDeath
And we had trouble getting them because they would rather ref basketball, one ref said they made $250-300 for the Saturday basketball games.

Tex85
This is from a national survey of high school officials. "0.4% of respondents answered they were overpaid and 18.3% indicated they were paid what they were worth. Roughly 21 percent answered they were underpaid and dissatisfied and 60 percent answered they were underpaid but accepted there were budget constraints at the level they worked." https://www.nfhs.org/articles/naso-survey-indicates-concerns-with-sportsmanship-shortage-of-officials/

Some basketball chapters are having issues, but not near football. Basketball is the best time/money ratio along with tournaments you can make really good money. IMO the problem there is fans. Ignorance is louder in a gym. I've seen officials have shorter fuses and ejecting fans and I don't mind it if it keeps officials officiating. Hopefully the UIL sees the Friday night football pay disparately and looks to make it more inciting to deal with the headaches.
