Don't know if this will be a popular opinion or not, but if I was in charge/had a say at the lower level classification level, Ferguson would be my first call.  His teams (Shelbyville) were the most physical teams I've seen the last 10+ years. Aggresive/physical/attacking defense, slot-T offense that fired off the ball and mauled people.

While at Shelbyville did he discipline his players if they went to breakfast as a team when invited for a Friday before school  by one of the area churches ?

I was just asking 😎................I won't bother to ask if the players at Shelbyville got to participate in pep rallies or if they had to just sit there quietly.

So the coach was trying to implement some discipline and hold kids accountable and the higher ups were against it?  I’m confused as to what went on. Was Russell in and decided it was too much and backed out? The supt is going to try and do it now? This is terrible for those kids.

It’s not like they hired someone thinking he was some new-age coach with “modern” methods. Like him or not, the guy has a well known reputation as a hard-nosed, old school, smash mouth football coach. I can guarantee that he didn’t represent himself as anything different during the hiring process. To hire a guy like that and 2 weeks into the season terminate him because parents complain about his methods makes no sense.

Funny you say that. My source said he forced the players to sit quietly with no emotion during pep rallies.

Also... Playing pickup basketball with your buddies during football season is an automatic dismissal. I will say this. To that man there is no shades of grey. If you break a rule you recieve the same punishment if your a backup longsnapper as you would if you where the Starting all state Running back. I have no issues with Jason Ferguson as a football coach.

And a town/community that was ostracized and still hasn't been allowed back into the rest of the Shelby County's good graces because of how they acted.

Are you talking about going to like open gym or him policing you playing basketball at youth group or something.

Texas ftball is unique in the sense that winning takes precedence over young adult development. The “We will Win” (at all cost) mentality has ruined many programs and small communities stay in turmoil and constant bickering. Harsh reality is that there only one champion in each division yearly. If admin and boards would place more emphasis on developing relationships with the youth that pass through the hallways and preparing them for life then it would make the AD job much easier. Sure winning is important but a big picture viewpoint of an overall program would decrease the revolving door policy of many small schools that’s always lookn for that homerun hire and championship trophy to pop their suspenders about…..  Sad but it’s reality

I think this is a really good post. You can look all over the state and the guys that have been at schools for a long time are focused on relationships first. Thats why in those years when they aren't as good the community isn't coming for their head. I believe there is a lot to say for stability!

Just to add a little humor to the situation, Texas Football wrote an article on L-K having 3 coaches in 48 and Texas Football called L-K the Eagles.   L-K’s mascot is not Eagles.

Maybe they changed mascots too. A lot can happen in 48 hours.

Sad that everyone doesn't understand this. Great post and 100% correct.
