Most of the world was still mired in the depression. Germany was about the only major country to have recovered from the Great Depression. It was known as "The German miracle". Germanys success was because Hitler launched a MASSIVE federal works program covering everything from the autobahn to armaments. Was it sustainable in the long run? Probably not...but it does explain his popularity. Of course, few people in the mid 1930s realized he was preparing Germany for war.

Most of Europe had recovered from the Depression by the mid-30's, because of FDR the U.S. didn't recover until 1940.  His programs delayed our recovery.  Some would say that they were working, but they were only a band aid on what should have been done.  The Supreme Court struck down many of his New Deal programs, so he had to ask Congress to give him more Supreme Court Justices as we are hearing today.  Many of the agencies and programs that are still around today are not viable and only harm Americans.

For a guy that was the bane of the American people he sure was popular.

Electoral College

1932...FDR 472, Hoover 59.

1936...FDR 523, Alf Landon 8.

1940...FDR 449, Willkie 82

1944...FDR 432, Dewey 99

They were desperate.
