I expect the Lufkin defense to dominate the Lobo offense in a few weeks. I think some people are going to be really surprised Aug 30th.

that's a strong statement. I'm not saying Lufkin's defense isn't that good but are they good enough to completely shut down their offense ?

Well, when a team gets back 8 or 9 defensive guys from the year before, that played well for the most part the past two years, expectations are high.  The last two years for Lufkin have not been a defensive problem, it's been an offensive scoring and sustaining drives problem, leaving the defense in precarious field positions, with the D spending  too much time on the field.  Didn't have a QB that could add that extra dynamic to the game, the offense became quite one dimensional around Kedren Young.  The QB situation is much better this year, Young is gone but many new O parts have stepped in to add some interesting and dynamic possibilities.  Still have the same coaching guys running the offense, so Lufkin fans are wondering how the dice will fall this year in this opening game.

can't fault him for having high expectations for his team.

Well, as anyone who has been part of a practice knows, practice is just practice. However, with that said the Lufkin D  has had a physical presence about them I've not seen in several years around here. Still they have to be coached and need to play the game.  I guess the honest thinker in me ask, is any of that enough to close a 4 plus score deficit for Lufkin the past two years?  Of course Longview is probably not quite what they were the past two years either.  We'll find out soon enough, then we go our separate ways for another year.

Ask the Longview kids. They know exactly what I'm talking about. The skill gap between Longview and Lufkin was evident in 7 on 7 and will be evident August 30th. I can't wait and I don't want to hear anything about how Longview starts slow.

The Longview defense better come to play that's all I'm gonna say.

It's more than that. My son played against them and he said they weren't very good.I trust his judgement. If you can't get open in shorts and shirts with no rush. I don't think it's gonna happen August 30th and I doubt Longview is going to be able to line up and bully Lufkin in the run game. You guys are gonna have serious trouble scoring next week. I think Lufkin will have some trouble scoring too. I guess we will find out next week but we clearly have the edge at WR and QB vs a secondary replacing pretty much everyone. Then our secondary who returns everyone vs a new QB. Boosie I'm sure will make some plays but outside of him I like our match-ups.

It's becoming obvious that I may have to embark on this journey to Lufkin August 30th. I was going to the Marshall and Tyler game to see the much improved Lions and the Mavericks stadium upgrades. But nonetheless, this game is becoming more intriguing for us outsiders. Lufkin is claiming the the days of the past are gone. In Longview eyes it's business as usual. If it keeps heating up in here, I just might take that ride down Hwy 69.

I'm confident in my guys. This is the group that we coached as kids against some of the best youth teams we could find in Texas and Louisiana. The defense has 4 kids that hold D1 offers (FS Young, DT Williams, LB Hooper,DT Alexander )and another in the 26 class(LB Hood) that I suspect will get some D1 offers before the year is out. Then another 3 kids that have picked up offers from smaller schools(LB Byrd, DE McClendon, CB Timmons). I fully expect them to give Longview all they want next week. Offensively we have 1 kid with a D1 offer (WR Preston) and the QB (Johnson) who is in the 26 class will pick up D1 offers at some point. We have a RB that had he not been sent to alternative last year would probably have several D1 offers. Then we have 3 more WRs that have smaller school offers(Coutee, Hooper, Taylor). Longview has a really good defense so I don't think we will go up and down the field on them but I do think we can hit some big plays. It's going to be a good game. This should be a classic Longview vs Lufkin match-up and I'm here for it.

I am glad for the Lufkin excitement. I hope it does return to the classic Longview/Lufkin games. This is the Lufkin team we have been hearing about for the last 2-3 years so we will see. I think the statement about the "talent gap" between the two schools was a misstep.  We will see come next week.

I know Lufkin and its fans want this game to be relevant again, so I hope it doesn't kill their season if they lose. Seems to be a lot of emotion and stock being put into this game.

On another note, did you see the 3 way freshmen scrimmage with Longview, JT and Legacy last week?

I saw 3 good 9th groups on the field at once.

Tyler high 9th did better than I thought. They'll need a good offseason, but they have some kids who can be competitive.

Everyone’s an all American in shorts man lol there’s teams that made that state 7 on 7 tournament that won’t sniff the playoffs this fall. I hope that’s not what you’re hanging your hat on. I wholeheartedly believe lufkin has improved & i do expect this game to be closer than it’s been in previous years but to use the term “skill gap”.. idk I just have a hard time believing the scores from the last few seasons just flip on a dime like that.

Longview never beats Lufkin in 7v7. Maybe never will. Style differences.

Our state title team even loss to Lufkin in 7v7. 46-32 that year.

7v7 is reps. Nothing more, nothing less.

Because half your fan base believe this game won't even be competitive and I know for a fact this game isn't going down like the last few years and you know that. You guys may not be overly talking but I'm picking up on key phrases. You guys don't even want us on the schedule anymore. This game isn't even relevant anymore right? You guys are already looking forward to DeSoto. I can't wait to next Friday.

You're going to find out next week but I'm telling you now. I don't want to hear anything from no one about how Longview starts slow. Anytime you guys get beat it's always what Longview didn't do more so then what the other team does. When you guys get beat next week. It's going to be because we have the better team not because of anything else. Scores flip on a dime all the time in HS football. Heck we beat you guys by 4 or 5 TDs one season only to blow a 28-0 lead in the post season. It's HS football.

I do believe there is a gap at WR/DB/QB as far as talent or experience. I think we will have the advantage easily in that department next week. Longview strength will be the OL but they will be going up against a defensive line just as good if not better. I give Longview DL/LB the advantage over our OL. I do expect the Longview front 7 to be stout and I don't expect to run consistently on them. I think Johnson could make some off script runs when he gets to moving outside the pocket but nothing consistent. I fully expect both offenses to struggle next week but with us returning all of our WRs and Longview returning no DBs with significant starting experience. I think that will present some opportunities for us to hit enough big plays to potentially win this game and honestly I think this is one we should win at home. 21-28 will probably be enough for either team to win this.

Nah. I have always thought a lot of talent has gone through Lufkin. That's not their issue lol. Plus, no game is guaranteed when it's an old East Texas rivalry. With Longview losing so many players, it wouldn't surprise me if Lufkin wins and we struggle, especially early in the season.

I was only laughing at the idea that 7 on 7 was indicative of anything.

I mean, there is a pattern of Longview starting slow under King just about every season.

You mentioning that Lufkin one year beat Longview bad and then Longview beat them in the playoffs when it mattered only speaks to the point that Longview starts seasons slowly.
