This will be third year that these two schools have met up. This only a rivalry in name only. Most of these kids have only heard stories about the games between both schools.

in the first meeting Marshall showed they had a bit of run through the halls by blowing out a Cujo team everyone thought would win the game. That was the start of many more losses that season. In the same season Marshall used that win to push them into the playoffs.

in the following season TH got the win in a TO game. Cujo fell short of the playoffs last season after going 6-4 on the season.

this season both teams are looking to start off with a win.

This will be a good matchup, my money is on JT though.

I think the scrimmage and this game against Marshall will help Tyler high Get ready for these Four triple option teams. That run out of a broken bone set and Midlothian that runs it out of the pistol.

I'm expecting another classic like we saw last season.  I could do without the 108 degrees and the 5 OT's this time around.

I STILL think we got that 2 point conversion that would have forced a 6th OT....refs must have been tired.  lmao.

ANYHOW.....

The Mavs closed out last season red hot with a blowout of Nac (70-40), a must-win game against Whitehouse in the regular season finale (30-28) , and a tough bi-district win over Denison (28-20).

eIn the second round they had #2 Midlothian Heritage on the ropes late into the fourth quarter before falling 21-14 in a game most were predicting a blowout.

Marshall has lots key components returning this season....and some question marks too.

Running Backs

The backfield should be in much better shape than it was headed into last season.

Entering 2023....Semaj Gatson was expected to be the workhorse of the offense.  But by season's end the Mavs had a stable of runners to keep defenses guessing.

RB Gatson will be the leader as the senior.  He had over 800 yards last season....averaging 6 yards per carry.  He's shifty and fast.  He had 8 scores.  Once he gets his burners going, he's tough to catch.

RB Landon Jones was THE unexpected surprise last season as a sophomore.  He's BIG.  He's a bruiser...and unlike the finesse of Gatson...he would rather run over/through you than around you.  He was 6'1" and 225 last year.  He looks a tad taller and has added even more muscle as a junior.  He had almost 600 yards rushing in 2023 with 11 scores.  He had another 200 yards receiving.  Power football runner.

Isaiah Bush rounded out what became a three-headed monster for the Mavs last season with his 500 yards on the ground (and 100 catching).   He averaged 6.2 yards per carry.

There are a couple of guys moving up from a JV that went (8-2, 5-1) last season that could prove to be valuable in the backfield too.

Wide Receivers

Raijon Sims was the #1 target last season in an offense that struggled to pass at times.  He still managed 500 yards and 5 scores.  He averaged just over 16 yards per catch.  He has good hands and has a turbo speed.

While Gatson and Jones are primarily running backs...they both combined for more than 300 yards receiving in 2023.... they could see even more of that this season with a seasoned OL and a QB to sling it around to multiple targets.

WR Tyler Johnigan lit it up last season on the freshman team...and was targeted for a couple of big passes in the playoffs for varsity last November.  He had a strong spring and is expected to skip the JV level and play varsity as a sophomore this season.

WR Judson Illingworth was hobbled by injuries last season.... but at almost 6'3' and 200#.... he could prove to be a beast his senior year.

Offensive Line

Marshall returns their entire offensive line from last season.  That's good news and bad news in a sense.  When they were good, they were very good.  But when they struggled...they were awful.  Their performances Vs. Hallsville, PT, Nac, Whitehouse, Denison, and Midlothian Heritage were stellar..... but they laid eggs Vs. Texas High, MP, Longview, and Carthage.  They got better as the season progressed....but they lacked consistency.  They will need to be solid to make the stable of RB's and a pocket passer QB successful.

Quarterback

Collier Slone was a field general.  He passed for 1,100 yards last season in spite of some fans' criticism that he couldn't pass......more than 3,000 career passing yards as a Maverick says otherwise.  But he's headed to college and the Mavs need a new signal-caller.

The Mavs trialed three guys at the QB position over the spring.  All three had positives....and some areas of concern.

Alton Henderson (Jr)-  This guy reminds me of the scrambling Marshall QB's of old.... like Cam Haller, Bryce French, Justin Hart, Darius Jones, Paul Todd, Brandon Walker, and of course Benny Valentine.  He has crazy happy legs with the ability to tuck it and bolt downfield.  This is an aspect Marshall hasn't really had at QB since JJ in 2018.  He has a strong arm.  Good at short passes....struggles with long passed downfield.  Biggest issue?  SIZE.  He's only 5'10".  That could be an issue Vs. big defensive lines.

Kyler Thompson (Jr)- This guy can chunk the rock.  He appears to be more accurate with the long pass....and he can heave it a long way downfield.  BUT.... he's not as mobile as Henderson.  He's also in the 5'10" neighborhood.

Bryce Alexander (Jr)- He's the dark horse.  He's an all-district pitcher for the Mav baseball team...so his arm strength is unquestionable.  But he's had the least snaps of the three.  It will be interesting to see if he gets a shot in August to get the job.  Even if it's for special packages.

Defense

Defense is expected to be the strength of the team...esp while the offense finds its rhythm with a new QB.

Defensive linemen Junior Eric Perkins is the anchor at 6'4" 340#.  He's a beast and garnering D1 offers.

DR Kaiden (DE) will return after a stellar season last year.

Jayden Cooks also comes back.

--------------------------------

The Mavs are going to get tested early with their opening games Vs. Tyler and Longview.  They will likely be underdogs Vs. 6A Legacy too.

(0-3) isn't out of the question.  (1-2) is likely.  I'd be thrilled with (2-1) headed into the Palestine game.

Either way.....Marshall will be battle tested by the time MP comes to Maverick Stadium to open district.

Give me Tyler, I think if they both can stay healthy, 6’1 WR Trey haralson and 6’1 RB cadarius Mcmiller will show why they will be probably the best RB/WR duo in east texas for the next few years. Both of them already garnering multiple D1 offers during their freshman year and being sophomores next year, they have an extremely high ceiling. Haralson put his name of on the map as one of the top receivers in the state in his class during this years 7 on 7 summer circuit and I believe it will continue going into the season. Those of the top guys, but Tyler team has a load of players on the offense and defense this year. 5’7 slot WR Davion Sirles and 6’5 TE Moore transfer from CH, along with 6’4 WR Trey Quinnsey who is garnering a few D2 offers just adds to versatility that this offense didn’t have last year and it showed this summer during 7 on 7. Don’t forget the 7-5A D1 Offensive newcomer of the year at QB Red will be manning the offense again as a JR. To add along with the SR lead defense that was a pretty decent unit last year led by the Twins at LB. It gives 2018 vibes but with a better coaching staff, way better. If it’s anything like that CUJO is in for a ride this year and years to come.

I will give more of my input on this game after the scrimmage with Terrell. In this district running the game will be the name of the game. We will have to see if the OL play has gotten better than last season.

I'll be interested to see how we look in our scrimmage with PT.  Not that I think PT is going to be a world beater by any means....but I don't think they will be a slouch either.  They have become an annual playoff team/contender more often than not.

Marshall has been running this offense headed into its third season.  It's tough to know how this will go with a new QB.

Slone was a field general.  He wasn't flashy....but he was efficient.  He wasn't mobile....but he was smart.  He took some chances, but he rarely made fatal mistakes.  Slone was just very good at keeping the offense running (as long as the OL cooperated) and moving down the field.  He won games with a very good short passing game and a sharp eye on who to get the ball to based on defensive formations.

We have a chance to add a factor into the offense that we haven't had since Alvarez brought it to Marshall:  a quick and shifty running QB.

Slone was a pocket guy and generally wasn't likely to run.  He would stay in the pocket until he found his guy.  That was his strength.

With the experienced backfield we have..... to add a running QB to the mix could create a defensive headache for the opposition.  IF we select that guy to take the snaps.  Having 3-4 guys that can take the ball makes it tough on the defense....esp when you have to respect the passing game too.

If we don't go with the running QB....I think we will see more of a continuation of what we saw with Slone.

But it's anyone's guess who it will be up until the season gets here.  I think all three guys will get their shot in the coming weeks.

That's why i believe Marshall will win this one. They are senior loaded. Now that doesn't mean much in some cases (like us in NAC a year ago), but in Marshall's case it can mean a lot. These kids should come into fall camp not only experienced but also knowing the system certainly gives them a leg up.

To the Marshall people. Will the game be up in the internet?

Yes.  KMHT video livestreams the game on Facebook and YouTube.

After watching the Marshall scrimmage I still believe the Mavs will win this one. The secondary for the Mavs will have to grow up in a hurry

especially to be able to stop the pass happy teams such as Palestine and Whitehouse. The running game for the Mavs will be hard to stop. they have depth at the RB and a experienced offensive line to go with it. The passing game I'm sure will get stronger in time. it should be a good one though just as close as the game last year.

It’s gonna be long night if there secondary is not where it should be. Terrell secondary struggled last night. Tyler just had too many receivers to go too. The key for Tyler is if the oline can hold long enough. If the Marshall has a line that can generate pressure then it might be a long night for Tyler. We will see, it will be a fun one!

The Mav defense gave up 2 long passes on the night..... but also had 2 interceptions too.

Was impressed with the Marshall offense.  I don't remember seeing them this far ahead this early.  But that should have been expected with 9 returning starters.

Sounds like we could be setting up for a similar game to last year.  High scoring and back and forth.

Of course I want to win....but a close competitive game against a Tyler team expected to be in the playoff in a tough 5A Div I district would be a good sign IMHO.
