I thought we had a chance to win.

But I did NOT expect that.

Marshall defense dominated.  Tyler didn’t compete a pass all night. Only had one first down in the second half.

The 85 yard TD run was really their only  breakdown.

Offense had lots of long drives. Kinda struggled when we had the short field.  We had several drives start on Tyler’s side of the field that we came away empty handed.

Offensive line looked great at times.  Not so great other times.  But not bad for a game 1.

I hope all that fumblitis was due to the monsoon…. But that MUST get fixed.

Got to tell the truth. The BETTER team won tonight no question about it! Tyler was beat in the trenches all night long! Marshall wanted the game more ,and played like it. Tyler has a TON of work to do. I believe Woods can still get it back on track.

Gonna line up our qb 20 yards back to have chance next week 👀🙃🤣🤣

I think Evangel used to do something similar to that back in the day..

I thought JTs defense was pretty decent. They made us methodically work for most of our yards. It definitely wasn't easy sledding.

I think the weather worked in our favor as well. (Other than the fumbles) Spread teams don't usually fare well on these type of nights. Which is why I'm surprised Longview didn't beat Lufkin by more tonight. Was a similar match up to this game.

Offensively, #5 was a big bright spot for JT. If he has time to get his motor running, look out!! Keep feeding that man and open up some play actions for your top wr. As the o-line keeps improving, there's plenty of potential to watch out for and build upon.

Isaiah Bush had 126 yards on 15 carries
Semaj Gatson had 95 yards on 23 carries
I'll see about getting the rest of the stats

Marshall rushed for 322 yards and passed for 104.  426 total yards.

McMiller had 120 yards (84 on one play) on 14 carries.
Drummer had 53 yards on 8 totes.
The Tyler paper says the Lions had 1 completion for 1 yard.  KMHT said they were 0-fer passing.
4 first downs.  1 in the second half.

Marshall had the ball for 32 mins while Tyler had it for 16 mins.

-----------------
Dominating performance.  Impressive considering Marshall was FAR from playing a perfect game.

I lost count on the Mav fumbles.  7?  I know we didn't lose them all....but that's gotta get fixed.  I could blame the downpour....but we may play in the rain again....for a district game.  That's not sustainable.

Credit to the Tyler defense...they made us look bad on several drives.  They gobbled up our O-line several times.  We will see better defenses this season (Longview, Texas High).  So we need some consistency in blocking.

QB Alton Henderson had some absolutely beautiful passes flat out dropped by the WR's.  That's tough considering the conditions.  We actually passed more than I would expect in a monsoon.  But...if the ball is going to be placed as well as Henderson did several times tonight....those guys need to catch them.

--------
Gotta feel good for these guys to get a big win when some folks were out there predicting a double digit Tyler win.  They see that stuff...they read it.  They can tell some Tyler folk don't respect them.  Maybe next year they will.

But three games into the renewed series and Marshall has 2 wins by double digits and one loss in 5-OT's.

--------

We all know what's coming next week.  Gonna enjoy this briefly.  Get through next week and move on to Tyler Legacy.

Again... best of luck to Tyler the rest of the way.

As long as our guys don't come into the Longview game already mentally defeated, I don't think we will see the typical blowout loss. Not predicting a win, but should be tighter than most think.

Be nice if they didn’t get intimidated. I agree they’re capable of having a mental block is a real thing with some teams!

I got a question for the Marshall fans. Why the qb from last night wasn't the starting QB last year. The kid can play. I was really impressed by his passes, decision making, and playing making abilities. The kid is a baller. If the recievers could catch the ball he could have easily thrown over 250 yards. I'll blame some of the drops on the fact it was raining.

I like 22 at running back also. That kid ran tough and was hard to bring down.

Alton Henderson was a sophomore last season.

Hard to start a sophomore over a three year starter that was a senior.

Collier Slone had 1700 yards passing last season at QB.....so it was his spot.

Henderson got some QB snaps last year....not many, but some.  Nothing was spectacular about his performances.  But he was young, new to varsity, and undersized.  He was a dang good at RB though...even if he was lower down on the depth chart.

The coaching staff did a fantastic job with him over the spring and summer to get him ready for the QB position.  Lots of mechanics, camps, 7 on 7, and snaps, snaps, snaps.

Well, if he wasn't that good last year. He definitely worked on his game to be great. I see good things in store for Marshall this year.

We're hopeful....but this upcoming game always seems to remind us how far away we are from where we want to be.

I don't think last night was indicative of how Tyler's season is going to go.  It was a combination of bad weather, having guys out, and maybe the Lions overlooking the Mavs.

McMiller is a beast.  And when Arriaga gets back that's going to be a great 1-2 punch.

I was expecting more of an air show from Tyler....but again...rain didn't help.  But the O-line was outmanned all night.

No sense in burning things to the ground after one game in adverse conditions.

The Lions will figure it out.

I hope a few more teams overlook us.

Of all the shockers last night, this scoreline has to be most shocking. Like I am genuinely dumbfounded.

Man Tyler got ate alive in the trenches.

His Dad and I grew up all of our lives together for the most part and are the best of friends. We were both tailbacks at Longview High and I called his Dad last year and asked him why in the HELL did he allow his son to leave Longview I.S.D. and out of all places Marshall damn Texas!!! Also, Alton Jr.’s Grandfather is my Pastor in South Longview as well. His Grandfather was a Lobo as well. 🤷🏾‍♂️ I can promise you, I never seen him as QB but, this is going to get interesting to say the least!
