Gunter vs Celina

Gunter not being full strength certainly tips the already unbalanced scale further in Celina’s favor.

Even at full strength, I don’t think it would make a difference in the outcome. Just might make the score a bit closer.

But classifications exist for a reason. Gunter will fight and compete. But this is punching too high up in my opinion.

Celina is loaded. They straight bullied Bellville in week one, and did it to La Vega for the entire second half last night. Bobcats should roll. Stay healthy and play with an edge and focus on cleaning up mistakes should be the goal.

Gunter needs to reconsider this game.  The bigger schools they are play at ranked teams in much larger classifications.  A lot better odds of injuries than a win.  May be too big a price to pay.  I might wave the flag instead of losing an athlete for the season.  Pride can be blinding

I don’t know if this is a pride thing for Gunter. I think the Tigers had trouble filling a schedule with competitive games vs similarly-sized opponents. Anna and Celina had openings and obliged. I don’t know that playing up in class somehow makes you more prone to injury any more so than a regular matchup.

I know Celina is not overlooking the Tigers this week. The Bobcats are treating this one like business as usual. I expect Celina to win comfortably in the end, but I also expect Gunter to give a good account of themselves come Friday.

So long as Gunter doesn’t get disheartened by back-to-back losses, the Tigers will be just fine. They’ll still be around when all the Christmas decorations starts to get setup.

Let’s broker a deal for week 3 next year.  Gunter vs Liberty Eylau and Celina vs Carthage.

I'm just curious to see how many of the "on the bubble" (talented but won't start at the bigger school players) might wind up at GT next year. It's not out of the realm. Maybe this was just a ruse to see some of these guys "live". I'm kidding of course.

Last time Celina and Gunter faced off was in 1999!

Bobcats and Tigers were both in District 11-2A at the time. Celina won the Week 9 district game 21-0, and then a few weeks later, knocked off the Tigers in the Region II Final 28-0. Bobcats were coached by G.A. Moore then, and current head coach Bill Elliot was an offensive line coach on staff. Celina went on to win its 2nd straight state title, on its way to four straight championships and 68 straight wins.

Lot of years between now and then. Some of the kids who were playing on those teams then just about have kids old enough to play on these teams.

Hope both teams stay healthy come Friday night and play a good clean game on both sides.

I endorse this. I'd love to see Celina vs Carthage again. Only had one matchup and it was an absolute heavyweight bout. But it's been a looooong time ago.

maybe.....we will see... they are better than everybody their size. Beating everybody by 50 don't teach you much

Wait until you see Gunter on the same field as  Celina. the size difference is so noticeable! Hopefully Gunter doesn’t have any injuries. That’s my biggest worry for them playing such a big physical team. On top of that, the bobcats could possibly be the best team in 4A both divisions. They are just built different this year in my opinion.

The funny thing about this is that if either hadn't found other opponents, it would have been Gunter vs Carthage last week.

So they were just supposed to take three weeks off because no one wanted to play them?

Come on guy, you always take up for Gunter in the paper and on here.  Jake got you on payroll?

Teams will play them but they will have to play up because no  other 3A-II schools, or even 3A-I schools have 60+ kids on their roster.  They have 30 something seniors, the other teams in their district don’t have that many total on their roster.  You keep believing they rub numbers down for classification purposes.  That’s why no one around the area puts much stock in what they do.  You think every high school on Grayson Co grew at a higher rate the last two years than Gunter?  LOL you are kidding yourself if you believe that.

I'm not saying they won't have to play up. They were supposed to play Brock and Brock backed out. They tried with Franklin to do a neutral site and it didn't work out. They have tried to play other 4A Division II teams in North Texas and they won't

My point in my response is you can't have it either way -- you can't bash them for playing people they probably don't have a chance against because the alternative is they would have back-to-back bye weeks.

And I'm sick of all the enrollment talk for five-plus years. The numbers are what they are, if they weren't then they wouldn't be. File a complaint with the UIL if you have proof there's wrongdoing.

I take up for them in the paper? I'd love to know how -- all I do is cover them and what they have done. A team that went back-to-back undefeated titles needs no one taking up for them.
