Vini vidi
Has the proliferation of artificial turf fields changed the game of football to a more wide open game?

trueblue82
I believe it was trending in that direction before the recent boom of turf fields. I don’t believe the high scoring games we are seeing has anything to do with the playing surface. Continuous rules changes in the name of safety (I’ll withhold my opinion) have tilted the game towards an offensive mindset. Hits that got players a helmet sticker 20 years ago draw a 15 yard penalty and a possible ejection now. The new rules make teaching proper tackling technique far more challenging and time consuming. while other safety rules reduce practice time. The offensive scheme doesn’t seem to matter. Two examples: in week one, Joaquin, running the Slot-T offense, defeated Frankston and their pass happy spread 65-44, while their QB went 4/8 for about 118 yards and one TD. In week 3, Shelbyville, with a very strong passing attack, defeated Waskom and their run heavy flexbone 54-48 on a last second Hail Mary. That game could have easily gone the other way. Rules changes are making tough, hard nosed defense a thing of the past.

I was a small guy compared to most and the way I was taught to bring the bigs down is now illegal. All I could play now is water boy
Lion Breed
When I was in school and played at the time we had grass back then before we had that Turf at Henderson, I use to itch and was allergic to the grass maybe it was what they had sprayed on the grass but anyways I had a hard time playing football cause of it, now it's turf, maybe if I was in school when we had gotten the Turf I could of kept playing at that time in the late 90s
The Wolf Den
I always liked playing on grass when it was maintained correctly. Most of the time it wasn’t. At least with turf you know what you’re dealing with.
nacdragon07
man when I was playing the first school I seen with turf was Hallsville. that was in 2004 I believe we were just realigned with Hallsville and Marshall. We didn't have turf at Nac until 2015 but we had a decent grass field in my opinion.

Hit someone too hard may offend them. All for safety first but 50 years ago we had kids getting hurt also. Not in my lifetime but in some of yours don’t be surprised to see tackle football done away with.JS

PeanutKing74
Performance wise, grass is far superior. Its more stable and safer for the athletes to cut and maintain ankle stability. But it is a massive pain to maintain and the quality of the fields can vary wildly from town to town. Turf is far easier to maintain. And allows for a more consistent surface to play on. Although it's more difficult to cut on and easier to get injured on. In my experience talking with athletes, the faster more agile kids prefer grass. And imo a well maintained grass field is the best playing surface overall for the athletes.
