The Alto Yellowjackets will travel to Overton to take on the Mustangs in a key District 11-2A D2 competition this Friday; kickoff is at 7:00 p.m. The Jackets fell to the league-leading Lovelady Lions on Friday 42-21; Overton had their bye week.  The previous week Overton lost to Lovelady by a similar score, 41-21.  Alto is averaging 30 points per game while allowing 16.4 PPG.  Overton is averaging 38.1 points per game while allowing 21.3 PPG. This will be the 8th meeting of the Jackets and the Mustangs with Alto leading the series 5-2.  Overton won last year's meeting 48-20.  The winner of this pivotal game gets a leg up in qualifying for the playoffs.

The Overton Mustangs are coached by second-year AD/HFC Scott Laymance.  The Mustangs return 17 lettermen with 12 lost to graduation; they return 10 offensive and 10 defensive starters from a 10-2 area finalist (4-1 district) 2023 squad.  Dave Campbell's Texas Football picked the Mustangs to finish third in District 11-2A D2 behind Lovelady, Mt. Enterprise, and ahead of Overton, Tenaha, Grapeland, Alto and Cushing.

Now and Next: High school football roundup

Alto Yellowjackets (6-2, 2-2) Last Week: The Yellowjackets lost, 42-21, to league-leading Lovelady.

This Week: Alto travels to Overton (5-2, 2-1) Friday. A Yellowjacket win would vault the team into the thick of the playoff picture. Overton and Mount Enterprise are tied for third place in the loops standings. Mean Sting’s leading tackler, Zack Battle, left the game with a lower extremity injury early in last week’s game. The Mustangs are averaging 292 passing yards per game and have scored 22 touchdowns by air. Overton, who had an open date last week, lost 41-21 to Lovelady Oct. 11. Overton is averaging 38 points a game.

Overton, Alto battle for playoff spot on Friday

Kyle Owens

Updated Wed Oct 23, 2024 3:08 PM CDT

OVERTON, Texas (KLTV) - The Overton Mustangs host the Alto Yellowjackets Friday with a spot in the playoffs on the line.

Alto and Overton have played four times since 2004 with Alto winning three of those meetings. Overton won in 2023, 48-20.

Michael Coleman and Kyle Owens broke down the game on Red Zone Overtime.

Owens is impressed with Overton’s offense this year.

“It‘s going to be a tough game for them next week with Overton,” Owens said. “Overton’s offense can score from anywhere and they have multiple people that can score as well.”

Alto and Overton are set to kick off at 7 p.m. Friday.
