Great positive response. I appreciate what you are doing. I think that boy is in good hands . God bless you and your family.

Well, I get it wrong plenty of times too, and he’s heard me say sorry plenty. But I’ve had great men of character to look up to my entire life (my dad included) so I try to model a lot of what they showed me. It’s a joy.

And I know we’ve drifted far off topic now, my apologies, but I don’t hate it. Still fruitful discussion.

I remember we beat Bryan Adams in the playoffs 68-0 and by the end king was playing backup jv players and some freshman and they still couldn’t stop us and yall know Longview is a run heavy team so we weren’t airing it out. I guess what I’m saying is sometimes it can’t be helped

So right. When we are talking about raising kids I love it. Great discussion about that other stuff too. My kids are all grown but still I am never too old to learn about being a better dad. For what it is worth my bride of 48 years says I may be the best instigator she has ever known. 😂😂 Have a great Lord’s Day my friend.

Your kids hang their participation trophies on the wall? What a soft post. So since you feel this way you believe you are right huh?

No participation trophies, no little league at all. Fishing, raising show animals for ffa, and general country life. When my kids were small where we lived too many dads made sure their sons played and made the all stars at the end of the season regardless of how good they were. Not all dads but enough to sour the taste of the game.

😂😂😂 Man I have never been able to fit into a pair of skinny jeans. Try old blue jeans, boots, animals, and dirty fingernails. Let’s just agree to disagree on what is an acceptable and not acceptable score in a high school football game. Today is Sunday- enjoy it and have a good day.

I'm against the mercy rule if a team is up by so many points the game is over. I think shortening a game is just as demoralizing as getting beat by 70 or more points. I'm not even a fan of the running clock but that's better than a mercy rule. I think you leave it to coaches. There are teams that do run up scores which I think is uncalled for but I really don't think all the beat downs are running up the score. I'm all for getting as many players in a game as possible and as others have said you can't ask backups to put the brakes on when they rarely get in the game.

Friday night we were up 37-0 on Hemphill and most of our starters were replaced by 2nd stringers and JV players early in the 3rd quarter .... then a Hemphill player was injured and it required an ambulance ... both teams gathered around the player and the coaches just agreed to let the clock run out ....

I've been on both ends of blowouts of the sort discussed here.  When you are on the losing side you just want it to end, like a toothache.  You hope the opponents will not disrespect your players by making fun of them, but you can't control the other sideline.   I used to hate the running clock until i simply couldn't stop the other team with what I had available and I grudgingly saw the necessity for it.  When I was fortunate enought to win by a large margin I spent the whole game worried about getting someone hurt in a meaninless situation.  In one game I did everything possible to hold the score down...then the 3rd team QB broke a 99 yard sneak.  I've seen coaches make heroic efforts to not humiliate teams, but unfortunately I've seen coaches who seem to be oblivious to the situation, even onside kicking ahead by 40+.  I never complained to the opposing coach after getting blown out, but I sure didn't hesitate to get what I could the next time the schools met up...even if it was in another sport.

What we need to realize is some schools lose bad because some schools admins or power brokers hate masculinity and hurt the boys chances of winning. So when those teams meet teams that don’t put the screws to football lopsided scores happen.

I think some people don't understand the smaller divisions if they think there is any kind of depth for most of the teams.  Both 2A divisions have some teams with 20 or fewer players in the program and if those young men are not very good athletes or you get a grade level with lesser talent,  games can get out of hand regardless of coaching or toughness or strategy.  Now, I feel differently about the 5A and 6A divisions...they should be competitive for the most part simply because they have access to more players.  I would personally not run the score up at any level, but sometimes when there are just not many athletes available out of the 50 or so boys in school bad things happen.

LE this past Friday kicked onside kicks after every TD and got nearly all of them back even scoring seconds before halftime up 64-14 going into halftime. It was deliberate. There were other factors that played into it, but dang it was intense. A running clock was implemented and they called the dogs off then.  Worst I’ve seen in a game here in Etx. Another game I witnessed last year for WO with Troup where we got beat badly, but Troup wasn’t kicking onside kicks.

I’ll tell a personal story here. It’s embarrassing but it makes my point. We got beat 80-29 in basketball my sophomore year. It burned me up. Absolutely Embarrassing. But boy did it spur me on to work harder. Get better. I didn’t ever want to feel that again. And I didn’t want my teammates to feel that way again. It sucked bad. But it turned out to be a HUGE motivator for me for the next few years. Later on, I was grateful for that game. Those boys taught me a lesson and I still think about it to this day. I didn’t go home and cry to mommy and daddy and ask for my safe space and to make those meanie pants coaches let us score more so my feelings didn’t get hurt. I started working harder. I amped up my off-seasons. Worked on my shot. Worked on my defense. I remember one winter playing outside when it was below freezing. My skin cracked open and bled and made bloody mud on a dirt court by my house. But I got better. I worked harder. That’s what this is about. Not crying and whining to other coaches to take it easy on us.

You have a competent AD/HFC making decisions so that helps you out.

I know I am in the minority on this but I have been on both ends of the spectrum. From Texas high school football scores website—-   85-0,84-0,86-6,77-0,66-0,69-0,68-0,67-0,67-0,80-13,65-0,70-0,71-0,74-12,72-0, and of course the might Refugio score of 95-0.  When does the UIL take control of this fad. I am not a believer in “nothing I could do” syndrome that so many coaches throw out . You score 30-40 points in first quarter or 50-60 in first half you know you have the game under control.Teach sportsmanship but score like that on a weaker opponent is not he same. You are helping keep a weak program down instead of a principle I thought most coaches used to abide by- rule of fair play and fair treatment. To an outsider it kind of gives high school football a bad image. And by the way my team won last night so I am not crying sour grapes, just about treating other programs like you SHOULD want to be treated. Just remember high school kids are watching their coaches  and their actions.   Just a Saturday morning thought and I know you could take this and a quarter and go buy a piece of bubble gum.

Do some homework and know what has actually transpired at these games before thinking anyone was unsportsmanlike and/or lumping them all together.  I know that Refugio was up 69-0 at half and had a running clock in the second half.  Backups playing entire second half.  Starting RB touched the ball only three times the entire game and had 3 TDs.  What more can the HC do?  Actually, I think the running clock started in second quarter.   When you're playing a program like Freer, there are nights that are going to be like this.  They have a history of being blown out and slighting the other team of a decent game.  You have to play what's put in front of you.  Perhaps Freer truly did the best they could, but they share as much responsibility as the other team in the final score.

You say "Good grief!"  Dude, it is you that ranted in your original post with...

"and of course the mighty Refugio score of 95-0.  When does the UIL take control of this fad. I am not a believer in “nothing I could do” syndrome that so many coaches throw out . Why would you mock a program like Refugio or others without knowing facts.  I simply pointed out that Refugio was up 69-0 at half and had a running clock in the second half.  Backups playing entire second half.  Starting RB touched the ball only three times the entire game and had 3 TDs.  What more can the HC do???  And you reply with "good grief" as though those weren't valid reasons showing that a winning team did their part.  Just accept that there are going to be games like this every year where there are teams on opposite ends of the spectrum and you could have a coach you hold in highest regard that wouldn't be able to keep the score down without taking his team off the field.  Good life lessons can still be learned by both sides.

No rant! Just my opinion. Just like your opinion of what I wrote. Both carry equal weight. You must not of been raised in the country. That is a reply most country boys use when something is different than what they think. Sometimes we might add “red eye gravy” in place of grief. Like good red eye gravy. I guess I could have said “ oh gee golly what a bad man that coach is he is such a brute” and it would have been different. Just accept it and move on. I still stand behind my opinion and sometimes I am interpreted wrong and I am ok with.
