Courtney at the time of his death was probably the best all-around basketball player in East Texas (all classifications). Coached by Bill Miller. I really think that he was NBA bound.

what year?

I am sorry I was reminessing (sp)

How many of you guys remimber Chris Bates - JT and then he went to Lee.

CY was still one of the best around. Lewis Nicholson (aka Popa) very quick.

The guy from Hughes Springs was Darin Terry. I think I got his first name right.

You Bullard people might remember the Langston twins. Keith and Kenneth.

Chris Bates was probably the most talented basketball player to come through Tyler. I just wish he had played at Lee after he transferred there after 2 seasons at JT. A wasted sr. year.

(netripper - you voted for yourself?? - good choice though)

You are right I did. I was just playing around. I do not belong on the best all-time list.

I remember Bates shooting from the 28 foot mark before it was worth 3 pts. He would fire it up!

We also played two guards from Palestine that were pretty good.

Alonzo Stevens and I think it was Johnny Davis. Simone and I battled it out with them on several occasions. They also had Ivory Lee Brown. He was a load.

What about Ricky Banks from Brownsboro he was pretty good. But, I think he never played in college. Was suppose to play at Navarro.

yes we doubled him (James) many times. Funny thing about that team. They beat us three times my senior year. TJC finals, twice in district. We then beat them in a playoff for the playoffs at Lon Morris. Next day we lost to Sammy Sexton and Mark Johnson of Lufkin.

Ok.. i need help from Hughes Springs or Daingerfield people on this one. There were two great players from Hughes Springs in the mid to late 80's. I believe they won state if i am not mistaken. Terry seems to ring a bell for one of their last names.

Darren Terry and Eddie Jones both played for Hughes Springs during this time. Tim Collier of Queen City was also a heck of a player in this era. Queen City only lost 3 games that year with all 3 coming to Hughes Springs(They were in same district). When they played the first time they were ranked #1 and #3 in the state in class 3a.

1985-1986 Palestine had Alonzo Stephens (All State) and Portia Hill (4A Girls Player of the Year). Boys lost to Mansfield in the State Semifinals. According to those that were there Palestine probably would have won if there had been a three point line at the time.

Yep, the man (Guy V. Lewis) has a gym named after him in his hometown (Arp) and he went on to build a fantastic program at the University of Houston as a coach (Phi Slamma Jamma). Can anyone tell me more about his records or stats as a player?

Greg Powell 5'!0" guard Shelbyville 1964-1968 is the all time single season scoring average leader in Texas high school basketball with 45.3 points per game. As a junior he averaged 37.4 which ranks 9th all time. As a sophmore he averaged 33.8 which ranks 21st all time.

He is 3rd all time in career scoring with 3637 points All these points before the 3pt shot. With Greg's touch and range the 3 point shot would have added 10 to 12 points to his average. All this while wearing a heavy knee brace after tearing up a knee his freshman year in football.(No scope surgary in those days)

Don Meredith of Mount Vernon, better known as the Cowboy quaterback at the Ice Bowl in Green Bay, was one whale of a basketball player in high school. In that era there was an invitational Dr. Pepper Basketball Tournament in Dallas and Mount Vernon went, I believe, in both his junior and senior years, winning over big city schools.

That of course was pre-Wilt the Stilt and dunking the basketball, but when he played in Gilmer in district, I believe it was Jan. or Feb., 1955, the Gilmer Mirror ran a picture of him hitting a jump shot from the charity stripe with all 5 Buckeyes around him unable to stop him. The Tigers beat Gilmer 98-25 that night and Meredith scored 50.

I have a friend that played on that Gilmer team. He could tell you lots about the Gilmer/Mt. Vernon rivalry, not just in football, but also in basketball. Dandy Don's my man though. My favorite football player of all time.
