Astroman
Lufkin takes a 10 point win @ Evangel last Friday. Lufkin is considered to be one of the top 2or3 5-A teams in Texas. Evangel is a 1-A Louisiana team, though still Evangel and formidable. Is anyone concerned about how strong Lufkin is this year based on the outcome of this game? Does it concern you that a top Texas 5-A team is only 10 points better than a 1-A Louisiana team?
Guest TtownEagle803
Evangel recruits, they arent your ordinary small school. They used to give Longview and Marshall a run for their money every year they played them. Lufkin will be just fine. Evangel has a reputation of being a Louisiana powerhouse. Small school or not, they play ball.
KirtFalcon
I went to the game and was really impressed with Evangel compared to the last couple of years. They were really loaded talent wise and seem to have gotten back on track a little. I think Lufkin was suprised too. Evangel's defense gave Lufkin fits most of the game. Both teams had several more chances to score but good defense and penalties slowed them down. I wouldn't worry too much about Lufkin . . . Evangel would beat the majority of 4A and 5A teams in Texas . . . don't let their 1A classification fool you. I was glad to see another Texas team beat them! :w00t:
ridgemont4
Small School? 85 players isn't exactly a small school!!

Rabfan
also, keep in mind it was played in La. their rules are slightly differnt than they are in texas. they're subtle changes but they're enough to throw off a team from texas that doesn't play that way normaly. it does lead to a few more knickle and dime penalties that turn in to momentem breakers. since you guys were at the game....did evangle still take a lot of cheap shots after the whistle when the refs wernt looking, like they normaly do? cubs37
LA high schools used to be able to play in divisions higher than their enrollment. Evangel has the won the 5A championship several times. The rules changed to say you can only play in division based on enrollment, so they are back in 1A. Actually they could still play in the 5A district they were in as long as all the schools unanimously vote to allow the petition. The 5A schools from their old district voted their petition down. I wonder why?

I have seen most of the Texas schools vs. Evangel over the years, surprisingly, it was a fairly clean game judging by what I've seen from them in the past. No real obvious cheap shots. They seem to have lost some of their cockiness since getting their tails kicked by Texas and Arkansas schools the past few years.
footballfan115
Evangel may have taken cheap shots in the past but the last few years that I have followed them they have played clean. However they aint afraid to run the score up on someone, and they will light you up. But their aint nothing wrong with that in my mind thats just football. Astroman
Several of us gave our comments to a thread this past Summer about what the outcome would be when Evangel travels to SLC this season. Most everyone agreed Evangel is still tough, but not the beast they have been in the past, and if a 1-A school (and I understand why and how they are 1-A in LA--BUT they are still 1-A) plays a TX. 5-A powerhouse school like SLC close then something is wrong. My point is IF Lufkin is the 2nd best 5-A school in TX, and they are only 10 points better than the best 1=A school in LA with a total enrollment of 238 vs. what 1,500 to 2,000 kids @ LHS then something is wrong! We have either been to quick to say because of the loss of coaches and the new private school in Shrev.,etc. that the Evangel we all grew up with, is no more; OR Lufkin at this point is not truely #2 in TX. I respect both programs and I have judged Evangel to not be the Evangel of the past on this board. If they can stay within 10 points of a stud team like Lufkin they are every bit as tough as they ever were; or either Lufkin at this point is ranked too high? You obviously missed the games last year and the year before that they played against Longview. Dirty, cheap shots, poor sportsmanship would be putting it mildly!
footballfan115
That may be true, but in my experience people say that they are dirty just because they got after somebody and put a whooping on somebody. That doesnt make you dirty.
Indaeast
Who couldn't hand pick 80 kids out of the north La area and be really good????

What I witnessed from Evangel does not fit the "getting after somebody" catagory.
Norm7
Hand picking 80 kids out of No La....are you implying that they have recruited these kids? If so, please reveal your source. Heresay is worthless. LHSAA has been right smack up in ECA's face the last 10 or 12 years and have found nothing in regards to them actually recruiting players. To say that they can "hand pick" players from No La is a pretty good stretch as well. They have the same ability that other schools have in regards of acquiring players. If I was a football player in the Shreveport area, and my choices were to play at a school that could care less about the football program, or transfer to a school that does, sign me up dude. Dont tell me you wouldnt yourself. I have watched a few ECA games the past 8 years or so and have done so because they have put a good product on the field and have been entertaining. Also because I have friends who's kids have played there. Knowing the history of HS football in No. La. I really have no problem with ECA having the success they have had. I know its easy for a lot of people to rip them because they do have the ability to enroll kids outside of their school district but so do the other schools. ECA simply used the rules that have been available to all the other schools and ran with it. Before Evangel opened up, no school from the Shreveport area had won a state title since the early 70's when Capt. Shreve won in 73-74. And if Evangel hadnt rolled around, there still would be no state title from Shreveport. Is establishing the program that they have established so wrong?
