Shankle set for SH return

The anticipated return of Spring Hill tailback DeMikel Shankle is slated for Friday's game against Winnsboro.

The senior, who injured his right knee in the third quarter of the season opener against Lindale on Sept. 1, has passed both strength and running tests in recent days and has received a doctor's clearance to play, according to Spring Hill coach Robert Bero.

Shankle returned to practice Monday and indications are he will play in the Panthers' homecoming game.

"I'm ready to get back, play and contribute," the senior said, following an afternoon workout. "Today was a learning day for us. We ran some, but not a lot."

Since his injury, the Panthers have also lost tailbacks Cody Hendricks and Jake Fudge.

Hendricks suffered a season-ending torn ACL on Sept. 8. Fudge, a sophomore, highlighted a 31-28 victory over Pleasant Grove with 211 yards rushing and three touchdowns on Sept. 15. He also injured his right hand and has since undergone surgery. His return is listed as week-to-week.

"We can make all the excuses we want to about losing players and this and that, but that's nothing more than an excuse," Bero said Monday afternoon. "Our running back, no matter who we put in there, is going to run hard and play hard."

Max Garcia started as the tailback in last week's loss to Chapel Hill, where he rushed for 106 yards on 24 carries.

Winnsboro is the Panthers' final non-district game prior to opening District 15-3A play at White Oak on Oct. 13. Spring Hill has an open date on Oct. 6.

Shankle suffered a torn ACL in the third game of the 2005 season and missed the final seven games.
