How Good of a President Was Nixon?

Nixon gets a bad rap for being a regular D.C. lying politician. His administration opened ties back up with China, and in hindsight might have prevented a war.

I don't see the point in ranking presidents, though.

No, I am serious. Nixon did what he had to do to keep the Democrats out of office and to keep this country safe. If it meant he had to break the law, so be it.

And to compare Hitler to Nixon is absolutely ridiculous.

The ends justify the means. Will you people get that through your head?

First of all, I don't agree that the end justifies the means.

Second, I don't agree that Nixon's means have been justified by anything. No good came out of the level of corruption that he brought to the White House.

Besides, it's outright silly to say that Nixon did what he did for the good of the country. He did it because he was an over-paranoid nutcase who would do whatever it took to outsmart his enemies, whether they were real or imaginary.

Does Watergate ring a bell and were you on this earth when Nixon was president?

He broke the law and tried to cover it up.

Nixon had some good attributes also. One was getting China back in line. To me he's alot like slick Bill, he had some good qualities but he will only be remembered for his screw ups.

Yes, Watergate does ring a bell. So does Iran-Contra. So does Monica Lewinsky.

Nixon was still a great President, and defined the statement that "the ends justify the means," especially when dealing with national security. The nation was safer with a Republican president.

But back to the question, how good of a president was he?

I tend not to post on the political threads anymore, but this one acutally made me laugh out loud. Monica Lewinsky was dangerous?! Clinton getting a __ now and then was dangerous to America?!

Depends on how you look at it. I don't see what Nixon did being near as dangerous to the moral fiber of America as it was to constantly cheat on your wife, lie to the nation about it, and then lie under oath about it. Also, I believe Clinton gave nuclear secrets to China.

Nixon was NOT impeached, Clinton was...

BTW -- I know this is a paradoxical concept in a political forum, but could everyone try to KEEP IT CIVIL from here on out ??

Save the personal attacks for e-mail ... ;)

Nixon was one of the best foreign policy presidents in my lifetime. I don't think he was as corrupt as Clinton, nor was his mistakes as harmful to America as the Clinton presidency. There were far worse things done by Clinton that he could have been impeached for than the Monica fiasco. Nixon's big sin was the cover up after Watergate. If he had confessed and said he had made a mistake, I believe his presidency would have survived. Overall, Nixon was a good president if you consider his accomplishments.

Reagan was the greatest president in history.
